Chapter 151 Mate Bond Education
POV: Luna
The next morning, Professor Cael announced a mandatory class on mate bonds.
"Perfect timing," Nova muttered. "Right before we do a dangerous ritual."
"Maybe it'll help," I said.
"Or make you more nervous."
We filed into the classroom with the other students.
Professor Cael stood at the front, looking serious.
"Today we're discussing one of the most important aspects of wolf life. Mate bonds."
Students shifted uncomfortably. This was always an awkward topic.
"First, let's clarify terminology," Professor Cael continued. "There are two types of bonds. True mates and chosen mates."
She wrote them on the board.
"True mates are rare. Perhaps one in a thousand wolves. The bond forms automatically when two compatible souls meet. It's instantaneous. Undeniable. Unbreakable."
I felt Liam's eyes on me. Through our bond, his emotions swirled. Pride. Happiness. Love.
"Chosen mates, on the other hand, are deliberate. Two wolves decide to bond. It requires ritual and mutual consent. The bond is strong but different. More like a deep partnership than destiny."
A student raised her hand. "Is one better than the other?"
"No. Both are valid. Both create lasting connections. True mate bonds are just rarer."
"What about dual bonds?" another student asked. "Can you have a true mate and a chosen mate?"
Professor Cael's expression became carefully neutral. "Historically, dual bonds are controversial. Some packs see them as blessed. A sign of great power. Others consider them cursed. A burden no wolf should carry."
"Why cursed?" I asked.
"Because dual bonds create divided loyalties. Conflicting pulls. And in some cases, the bonds can war with each other. Causing pain and instability."
Through my mark, I felt Miguel's essence pulse. A reminder that I'd loved him. Lost him. And now loved Liam.
Was that a dual bond? Even though Miguel was gone?
"Can you tell me more about dual bonds?" I asked.
"Why the interest, Miss Eclipse?"
"Just curious."
Professor Cael studied me. "Dual bonds are extremely rare. Usually occurring when a wolf loses their first mate but the bond doesn't fully sever. When they find a second mate, both bonds can exist simultaneously."
"That sounds painful."
"It can be. The first bond pulls toward memory and grief. The second toward future and hope. Balancing both requires tremendous strength."
Around the classroom, students were whispering. Sharing hopes and fears about their own potential mates.
"I hope I find my true mate," one girl said.
"I hope I never do," another replied. "Too much pressure. Too much loss of control."
"What if your true mate is awful?" a boy asked.
"Then you have a very difficult choice," Professor Cael said. "Accept the bond and try to make it work. Or reject it and live with the pain of severing a true connection."
"Has anyone ever successfully rejected a true mate bond?" I asked.
"Yes. But it's agonizing. The bond fights back. Tries to pull the mates together. Rejection requires constant effort and causes lasting damage to both parties."
That was terrifying. If Liam and I were really true mates, we were stuck with each other.
Not that I minded. But the lack of choice was unsettling.
"Now," Professor Cael said. "Let's discuss bond recognition. How do you know when you've found your mate?"
Students started calling out answers.
"The pull!"
"Instant connection!"
"Your wolf goes crazy!"
"All correct. But there's more. Physical reactions. Magical resonance. And for powerful wolves, mark reactions."
My mark suddenly flared with heat.
I gasped and grabbed my wrist.
"Miss Eclipse?" Professor Cael asked. "Are you alright?"
"Fine. Just a cramp."
But it wasn't a cramp. My mark was burning. Pulsing with energy I couldn't control.
Through the mate bond, Liam felt it. He was on his feet immediately. "Luna?"
But then something weird happened.
Another student stood up. A boy I'd never noticed before.
"I feel it too," he said.
Everyone turned to look at him.
He was handsome. Dark hair. Green eyes. An intensity that made my wolf pay attention.
"Who are you?" I asked.
"Aiden Cross. Transfer student. I arrived yesterday."
"And you feel Luna's mark?" Professor Cael asked sharply.
"Yeah. It's like it's calling to me."
No. That wasn't possible.
Through the mate bond, Liam's emotions spiked. Jealousy. Confusion. Fear.
My mark pulsed again. Stronger this time.
And I felt it. A pull toward Aiden. Similar to what I felt for Liam but different.
Older. Deeper. More primal.
"This is unprecedented," Professor Cael said. "Miss Eclipse, Mr. Castellan, Mr. Cross. Please stay after class."
The other students filed out, whispering excitedly.
When we were alone, Professor Cael examined my mark.
"How long has this been happening?" she asked.
"The burning? Just now."
"And you, Mr. Cross? When did you first sense Miss Eclipse?"
"The moment I arrived on campus. I thought it was just attraction. But now—" He looked at me. "It's more than that."
"It's a mate bond," Professor Cael said grimly.
"But I'm already bonded to Liam!" I protested.
"I know. Which means you have two true mate bonds."
The room went silent.
"That's impossible," Liam said. "True mate bonds are unique. You can't have two."
"Normally, no. But Miss Eclipse is an Eclipse wolf. Her magic is different. Stronger. It's possible her soul is compatible with multiple mates."
"So what does this mean?" I asked.
"It means you have a choice. Accept both bonds. Choose one and reject the other. Or reject both and live without a mate."
"Those are terrible options."
"Yes. They are."
Aiden stepped forward. "I didn't come here looking for a mate. I came because my pack sent me. But if Luna and I are bonded—"
"We need to figure this out," Liam interrupted. "Test it. Make sure it's real."
"How?" I asked.
"Physical contact," Professor Cael said. "If there's a true bond, touching should trigger a reaction."
I looked at Aiden. At this stranger who apparently shared a connection with me.
"Okay," I said. "Let's test it."
I reached out my hand.
Aiden took it.
The moment our skin touched, my mark exploded with light.
Power surged between us. Not like the mate bond with Liam. Different. Wilder. More chaotic.
And in my mind, I saw flashes. Memories that weren't mine.
Battles. Loss. A life lived in shadows.
Aiden's life.
I pulled back, gasping.
"What did you see?" Professor Cael asked.
"His memories. His past. It was like we were connected on a soul level."
"That's a true mate bond. No doubt about it."
Through my bond with Liam, I felt his pain. His fear of losing me.
"This doesn't change anything," I told him. "You're my mate. My choice."
"But you have two bonds now," he said quietly. "Eventually, you'll have to choose which one to honor."
"Then I choose you. Right now. I choose you."
Through the bond, I felt his relief.
But also his doubt.
Because even he knew. Eventually, having two true mate bonds would force a decision.
And someone would get hurt.
Professor Cael dismissed us with orders to report any changes.
Outside, Aiden caught up to me.
"Luna, wait. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to complicate your life."
"It's not your fault. You can't control fate."
"Neither can you. But we're stuck with it anyway."
"What do you want from me?" I asked.
"Nothing. I just want you to know I'm not going to fight for you. Not going to try to steal you away from Liam. The bond is real, but your choice is your own."
"Thank you."
"But if you ever need me. For any reason. I'll be there. Because that's what mates do."
He left, and I stood there feeling overwhelmed.
Two true mates. How was that even possible?
Liam appeared beside me. "Are you okay?"
"No. But I will be."
"What do we do now?"
"We do the ritual. Remove your tracking mark. And worry about the mate bond situation later."
"In that order?"
"In that order."
We had enough problems without adding mate bond drama to the mix.
Tonight, we'd cleanse Liam's mark.
Tomorrow, we'd figure out what having two true mates meant.
And somehow, we'd survive it all.
Together.
Because that's what mates did.
