Chapter 128 Romance and Resolve
POV: Luna
The next three days blurred together.
Training. Planning. Preparing for a confrontation that might kill us all.
But tonight, the Headmaster had ordered everyone to rest. Forced downtime before the final push.
I found myself on the roof of the dormitory, staring at the stars.
The moon was waxing, almost full. In four more days, it would be complete. The same night as Malachar's deadline.
Of course he'd chosen the full moon. Maximum power for both of us.
"I figured I'd find you up here."
Cole climbed through the access hatch and sat beside me.
"Couldn't sleep?" I asked.
"Nope. Kept feeling your restlessness through the bond."
"Sorry. I should probably learn to shield that."
"Don't." He took my hand. "I like knowing what you're feeling. Makes me feel closer to you."
We sat in silence for a while, just holding hands and watching the sky.
"Are you scared?" Cole asked eventually.
"Terrified."
"Good. That means you're smart."
"Doesn't mean I know what I'm doing."
"Nobody knows what they're doing, Luna. We're all just making it up as we go."
I laughed softly. "That's not reassuring."
"It's honest." He squeezed my hand. "But for what it's worth, I trust you. Completely."
"Even though I might get you killed?"
"Even though."
I looked at him. Really looked at him. The moonlight caught his features, highlighting the strength in his jaw, the intensity in his dark eyes.
"How do you do that?" I asked. "Trust so easily?"
"It's not easy. Trust is the hardest thing in the world." He turned to face me fully. "But you've earned it. Every single day, you've proven you're worth believing in."
"I don't feel like it."
"You never do. That's part of what makes you different."
"Different how?"
"Most powerful people let it go to their heads. They start thinking they're invincible. Special. Above everyone else." He brushed a strand of hair from my face. "But you? You're terrified of your own power. Constantly worried about hurting people. That fear keeps you grounded. Keeps you human."
"I'm not human. I'm a wolf."
"You know what I mean."
I did.
We fell silent again, but it was comfortable. Easy.
"Can I ask you something?" Cole said.
"Always."
"Do you still love him? Miguel?"
The question caught me off guard. Not because it was inappropriate, but because I hadn't let myself think about it lately.
"I don't know," I admitted. "Is it still love if the person doesn't exist anymore? If they're just essence and memory?"
"I think love can exist in a lot of forms."
"Then yeah. I still love him. But it's different now." I touched my mark. "He's part of me. Like family. Like the best friend I'll never see again but who shaped who I am."
"And that doesn't feel like a betrayal? To move on with me?"
"It did. At first." I looked at Cole. "But Miguel told me to. Told me to let you in. To trust you."
"He was a good guy."
"He was. And I think he'd like you."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. You're both stubborn. Both protective. Both willing to fight for what you believe in."
Cole smiled. "I'll take that as a compliment."
"You should."
He leaned closer, his voice dropping. "Can I tell you something?"
"Of course."
"I think I'm falling in love with you."
My heart stopped. "Cole—"
"You don't have to say it back. I know you're not ready. I just needed you to know. Before we face Malachar. Before everything gets even more dangerous." He cupped my face gently. "I need you to know that you're worth fighting for. Worth dying for, if it comes to that."
Tears burned my eyes. "Don't say that. Don't talk about dying."
"Why not? It's the truth."
"Because I can't lose you too. I can't lose anyone else."
"Then we'll make sure nobody dies. We'll fight together. Win together. Survive together."
"You can't promise that."
"Watch me."
He kissed me.
It was different from our other kisses. Deeper. More desperate. Like he was trying to memorize the feel of me in case this was the last time.
When we pulled apart, we were both breathing hard.
"I love you too," I whispered. "I think I have for a while. I was just too scared to admit it."
Cole's smile was brilliant. "Yeah?"
"Yeah."
He kissed me again, softer this time. Sweeter.
My mark pulsed gently. Not in warning, but in approval.
Miguel's essence whispered contentment.
For the first time in months, I felt like maybe I was allowed to be happy. To move forward. To love someone new without erasing the love I'd had before.
We stayed on the roof for hours, talking about everything and nothing. Our childhoods. Our dreams. Our fears for the future.
Eventually, Cole said, "We should probably sleep. Tomorrow's going to be intense."
"Just five more minutes."
"Luna—"
"Please. I just want to exist in this moment a little longer. Before everything gets complicated again."
He pulled me closer, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. "Okay. Five more minutes."
We sat like that, watching the stars, until my eyes started to drift closed.
Cole helped me back through the hatch and walked me to my door.
"Get some sleep," he said. "For real this time."
"You too."
He kissed my forehead. "Sweet dreams, Luna."
I went inside and found Nova pretending to be asleep.
"I know you're awake," I said.
She sat up, grinning. "Finally! I've been waiting for you two to say it."
"You were listening?"
"The bond works both ways, remember? I felt the emotional spike. Had to know what was happening."
"That's invasive."
"That's being a good friend." She patted the bed beside her. "Come on. Tell me everything."
I climbed into her bed and we talked for another hour, whispering like we were at a sleepover.
It felt normal. Safe. Like we were just regular teenagers instead of wolves preparing for battle.
Eventually, we both fell asleep, exhausted but content.
I dreamed of the otherworld.
Miguel was there, barely visible now. Almost completely translucent.
"Hey," I said softly.
"Hey yourself." He smiled. "I felt it. What you and Cole said to each other."
"I hope that's okay."
"More than okay. I'm happy for you, Luna. Really happy."
"I still miss you."
"I know. But you're moving forward. That's what matters."
"Are you going to disappear completely?"
"Eventually. But not yet." He touched my mark, his hand barely substantial. "I'll be here as long as you need me."
"I'll always need you."
"Then I'll always be here. Just in a different way."
The otherworld started to fade.
"Miguel, wait. About the confrontation with Malachar. Do you have any advice?"
"Trust your pack. Trust yourself. And remember that the seal isn't just a lock. It's a choice."
"What does that mean?"
But he was gone.
I woke up confused and restless.
Nova was still asleep beside me. Through the bond, I could feel my other pack members sleeping peacefully.
Except Cole. He was awake too.
I reached out through the bond. Can't sleep either?
Nope. Too much on my mind.
Want company?
Always.
I slipped out of Nova's bed and went to find him.
He was in the common room, staring at the fireplace.
"Hey," I said.
"Hey." He pulled me down beside him. "Bad dreams?"
"Not bad. Just confusing. Miguel said something about the seal being a choice."
"What kind of choice?"
"I don't know. But I think it's important."
We sat together until dawn, talking through possibilities and strategies.
By the time the sun rose, we had a better plan. Not perfect, but better.
The next two days passed quickly.
We trained relentlessly. Professor Cael drilled us on maintaining the pack bonds under stress. Professor Thorne taught us advanced combat techniques.
The Headmaster fortified the wards as much as possible.
Darius even helped, organizing the senior students into defensive units.
"You're actually helping?" I asked him during a break.
"Don't sound so surprised. My family might be trash, but I'm not." He looked at me seriously. "Besides, if Malachar wins, we all lose. Even me."
"Thank you."
"Don't thank me yet. Save it for after we survive."
On the third night, my entire pack gathered in my dorm room.
"Tomorrow's the day," Aria said. "Are we ready?"
"As ready as we'll ever be," I replied.
"The plan is solid," Sienna said. "Luna enters the otherworld to confront Malachar at the seal. We anchor her from here, feeding her power through the bonds."
"And if something goes wrong?" Lyric asked.
"We adapt. We always do."
Nova squeezed my hand. "We're with you. No matter what."
"I know." I looked at each of them. "And I want you to know that whatever happens tomorrow, I'm grateful. For all of you. For this pack. For the trust you've given me."
"Getting sentimental?" Cole teased.
"Maybe. Is that allowed?"
"This once."
We spent the evening together, not talking about the battle. Just being friends. Being family.
Eventually, everyone went back to their own rooms.
Except Cole. He stayed.
"Is this okay?" he asked. "Being here?"
"More than okay."
We lay on my bed, fully clothed, just holding each other.
"I meant what I said," Cole whispered. "About loving you."
"I know. I meant it too."
"Good. Because tomorrow, when we win, I'm going to take you on a proper date. No training. No battles. Just us."
"That sounds amazing."
"It's a promise."
We fell asleep like that, wrapped in each other's arms.
I didn't dream this time. Just deep, peaceful rest.
When I woke, Cole was already up, watching me with soft eyes.
"Morning," he said.
"Morning. How long have you been awake?"
"About an hour. I wanted to memorize this. You looking peaceful."
"That's creepy."
"That's romantic."
"Still creepy."
He laughed and kissed me. "Come on. We have a dark mage to defeat."
We got ready in silence, both of us hyper-aware that this might be our last normal moment.
As we were about to leave, my mark suddenly pulsed. Hard.
I gasped and grabbed my wrist.
"Luna?" Cole was beside me instantly. "What is it?"
"The mark. Something's wrong."
It pulsed again, urgent and demanding.
Through the bond, I felt my pack reacting. They felt it too.
"It's calling me," I realized. "Pulling me toward something."
"Toward what?"
"I don't know. But we need to go. Now."
We ran out of the dorm, gathering the others as we went.
The mark led us toward the forest. Toward the eastern perimeter where Malachar had left his message.
And as we got closer, I realized what was happening.
He wasn't waiting until tonight.
He was here now.
