Chapter 121 Dark Figure Revealed
POV: Luna
I woke to sunlight streaming through the infirmary windows.
Cole was still there, asleep in the chair beside my bed, our hands still linked.
I watched him for a moment. His face was relaxed in sleep, peaceful in a way it never was when he was awake.
Last night felt like a dream. The kiss. The confession. All of it.
But his hand in mine was real.
The nurse appeared, checking her charts. "How are you feeling, Miss Eclipse?"
"Better. Can I leave?"
"Let me check the contamination levels first."
She ran her diagnostic spells. The dark magic residue from the claim mark was gone completely.
"You're clear to go," she said. "But take it easy today. No training or magic use."
"Got it."
Cole stirred, blinking awake. When he saw me watching him, he smiled. "Hey."
"Hey yourself. You stayed all night."
"I said I would."
The nurse cleared her throat. "Mr. Cole, visiting hours ended seven hours ago."
"Sorry." He didn't look sorry at all. "I'll leave now."
He squeezed my hand once before letting go and standing.
"I'll see you later?" I asked.
"Definitely."
He left, and I got dressed in the clothes Nova had dropped off earlier.
When I emerged from the infirmary, my entire friend group was waiting.
"Finally!" Lyric said. "We've been here for like an hour."
"Why didn't you come in?"
"The nurse said you needed rest." Nova grinned. "But now you're up, so spill. What happened after we left?"
Heat crept up my neck. "Nothing."
"Liar. Cole looked way too happy when he left."
"We talked. And maybe kissed."
All four of them squealed.
"About time!" Aria said.
"We knew it was going to happen," Sienna added. "The tension was getting ridiculous."
I laughed. "Okay, okay. Can we go get breakfast now? I'm starving."
We headed to the dining hall. The campus looked rough. Scorch marks from magical battles, broken windows being repaired, sections of wall still crumbled.
But students were already working on cleanup. Life at Silverwood moved fast.
At breakfast, we found a corner table away from everyone else.
"So what happens now?" Nova asked. "With Morgana gone, are things finally going to calm down?"
"Probably not," I admitted. "She was working with someone. The rogues, the traps, all of it was too coordinated to be just her."
"Cassandra's Circle," Aria said.
"Maybe. But I think there's more to it."
Sienna had her notebook out. "I've been researching the Kaine family. Morgana was cast out twenty years ago for practicing dark magic. She's Darius's aunt, but the family disowned her."
"Does Darius know she was here?"
"I don't know. But we should probably ask him."
I hadn't seen Darius much this season. He'd been keeping his distance, probably dealing with his own pack politics.
"Where is he anyway?" I asked.
"Alpha wing," Lyric said. "He's been holed up there since the full moon."
After breakfast, I decided to find him.
Cole intercepted me in the hallway. "Where are you going?"
"To talk to Darius. He needs to know about his aunt."
"I'll come with you."
"You don't have to—"
"Luna." He gave me a look. "After last night, I'm not letting you wander around alone. Especially to confront an Alpha."
Fair point.
We found Darius in the training room, beating the hell out of a punching bag.
He saw us and stopped. "What do you want, Eclipse?"
"To talk. About Morgana Kaine."
His expression went cold. "What about her?"
"She was the dark figure. The one who's been attacking me. She tried to steal my Eclipse power last night during the full moon."
Darius went very still. "She's here? At Silverwood?"
"She was. The Headmaster arrested her."
He was silent for a long moment. Then he punched the bag so hard it flew off its chain.
"Darius—" I started.
"Get out."
"I just thought you should know—"
"I said get out!" He whirled on us, eyes flashing gold. His wolf was right at the surface. "My family cast her out. Erased her from our history. And she shows up here? Attacking students? Trying to steal Eclipse power?"
"She's been doing it for years," I said carefully. "Killing Eclipse wolves. Taking their power."
"I know what she did!" He was shaking with rage. "My father told me the stories. Warned me she might come back someday. But I thought— I hoped—"
He cut himself off.
Cole stepped slightly in front of me, protective. "Calm down, Kane."
"Don't tell me to calm down." But Darius did take a breath, forcing his wolf back. "Sorry. This is just— it's complicated."
"I get it. Family stuff usually is."
Darius looked at me, really looked at me. "You fought her. And won."
"Barely."
"But you did." Something like respect flickered in his eyes. "That's more than anyone else managed. She's killed six Eclipse wolves over the past two decades. All of them trained, powerful. And you took her down."
"I had help."
"Still." He sat down on a bench, suddenly looking exhausted. "What happens to her now?"
"I don't know. The Headmaster has her in custody. There will probably be a trial."
"Good." His hands clenched into fists. "She deserves to rot for what she's done."
We left him there, brooding and angry.
"That went better than expected," Cole said as we walked.
"Yeah. I thought he might actually attack us."
"He might have if I hadn't been there."
I bumped his shoulder. "My hero."
He smiled and took my hand.
We were walking toward the library when the Headmaster appeared.
"Miss Eclipse. Mr. Cole. Perfect timing. I need you both in my office. Now."
That didn't sound good.
We followed him to the administrative building. Professor Cael and Professor Thorne were already in his office, along with two people I didn't recognize.
They wore Council robes.
Oh no.
"Miss Eclipse," one of them said. She was elderly, with silver hair and sharp eyes. "I'm Council Member Vex. This is Council Member Thorne."
"Related?" I asked, looking at Professor Thorne.
"My mother," the professor said.
"We're here to discuss the Morgana Kaine situation," Vex continued. "And your role in her capture."
"I just defended myself."
"You absorbed the stolen power of six Eclipse wolves and redirected it back to the otherworld." Council Member Thorne spoke for the first time. He was younger, maybe forty, with dark eyes that missed nothing. "That's not simple self-defense."
"What was I supposed to do? Let her kill me?"
"Of course not," Vex said. "We're not accusing you of wrongdoing, Miss Eclipse. We're trying to understand your capabilities."
Translation: they wanted to know how powerful I was. How much of a threat.
"Luna's capabilities are still developing," the Headmaster said carefully. "She's only been at Silverwood for two years. Her training is ongoing."
"Clearly," Vex said. "Which is why we're proposing enhanced security measures."
"What kind of measures?" Cole asked.
"Guards. Magical monitoring. Restricted movement privileges."
"You want to put me in a cage," I said flatly.
"We want to keep you safe," Vex corrected. "Morgana Kaine isn't the only one who knows about Eclipse power. There will be others."
"So teach me to defend myself better. Don't lock me up."
"It's not a prison—"
"It's exactly a prison. You want to control where I go, who I see, what I do. All because I'm powerful enough to be a threat."
Vex's expression hardened. "You're powerful enough to be dangerous, Miss Eclipse. To yourself and others. These measures are for everyone's protection."
"No." I stood up. "I won't agree to this."
"You don't have a choice. The Council has voted—"
"The Council can vote all they want. But I'm still a student here, which means I have rights. And one of those rights is freedom of movement on campus."
The Headmaster cleared his throat. "Actually, Miss Vex, Luna is correct. Academy charter protects student autonomy unless they're proven to be a direct threat. Luna has only acted in self-defense."
Vex looked frustrated. "Headmaster, surely you see the risk—"
"I see a young woman who's been attacked repeatedly and has defended herself admirably." He looked at me. "However, Luna, some enhanced security wouldn't be unreasonable. Not guards or restrictions, but perhaps an escort system? Someone trained to assist if you're attacked again?"
I looked at Cole. He squeezed my hand.
"Fine," I said. "But I choose the escort."
"Agreed."
"I choose Cole."
Vex sputtered. "A student? She needs professional—"
"Mr. Cole is our combat instructor," the Headmaster interrupted. "And he's proven himself capable. I see no issue with this arrangement."
Cole looked surprised but nodded. "I accept."
The Council members weren't happy, but they couldn't argue with the Headmaster's logic.
They left after extracting promises that I'd report immediately if anything else happened.
When they were gone, I sagged in my chair.
"That was intense," I said.
"You did well," Professor Cael said. "Standing up to the Council isn't easy."
"They're scared of me."
"They're scared of what you represent. Eclipse power has been gone for so long, they don't know how to handle it."
"So they want to lock it away."
"Some do," the Headmaster said. "But not all. I fought for you today, Luna. Don't make me regret it."
"I won't."
He dismissed us.
Cole and I walked out in silence.
"So," he said eventually. "Guess we're officially together now. At least in a professional capacity."
"Guess so."
"How do you feel about it?"
I thought about it. Having Cole with me all the time wasn't exactly a hardship. Especially now that we'd crossed into actual relationship territory.
"I think I'm okay with it," I admitted.
He grinned. "Yeah?"
"Yeah. Though you might get sick of me."
"Not possible."
We made it back to the main courtyard. Students were everywhere, finishing cleanup from last night.
Nova waved us over. "There you are! We need to talk."
"About what?"
"Cassandra's Circle. They're up to something."
Of course they were.
We followed her to a quiet corner.
"Lyric hacked their group chat," Nova said. "They're planning something for tonight. Some kind of ritual in the forest."
"What kind of ritual?"
"We don't know. But they've been buying dark magic supplies. Lots of them."
I looked at Cole. "We should investigate."
"Agreed. But carefully. And with backup."
"Obviously."
We spent the rest of the day planning. If Cassandra and her circle were doing dark magic rituals, we needed to know what and why.
As evening approached, we gathered at the edge of the forest. Me, Cole, Nova, Aria, Sienna, and Lyric.
"Everyone ready?" I asked.
They nodded.
We moved into the trees, following the path Lyric had traced from the hacked messages.
The forest was dark, shadows thick under the canopy. My wolf senses kept me oriented, tracking the faint magical signatures ahead.
We found them in a clearing.
Cassandra's entire circle was there. Nine girls, all dressed in dark robes, standing around a ritual circle drawn in what looked like blood.
"What are they doing?" Nova whispered.
Sienna's eyes went wide. "That's a summoning circle. They're trying to summon something from the otherworld."
"Something like what?"
Before she could answer, the ritual circle flared to life.
Cassandra's voice rang out, chanting in a language I didn't recognize.
The air in the center of the circle started to shimmer and darken.
Something was coming through.
"We need to stop this," Cole said.
"How?"
"Break the circle."
I didn't hesitate. I shifted partially and rushed forward.
But I was too late.
The summoning completed.
A figure materialized in the circle. Tall, cloaked in shadows, with glowing red eyes.
It looked like the dark figure from before, but different. More solid. More real.
"Finally," it said in a voice that made my skin crawl. "I'm through."
Cassandra smiled triumphantly. "Welcome, Master. We've brought you the Eclipse wolf, just as promised."
The figure turned those red eyes on me.
"Luna Eclipse. We meet at last. Not through barriers or otherworld interference. But here. In the flesh."
I shifted fully, my wolf snarling. Cole moved beside me, his own wolf emerging.
"Who are you?" I demanded.
The figure's hood fell back.
I gasped.
It was a man. Middle-aged, handsome in a cold way, with silver hair and those burning red eyes.
"My name is Malachar," he said. "And I've been waiting a very long time for an Eclipse wolf to emerge again."
He raised a hand and dark magic exploded outward.
We scattered.
The battle began.
My friends engaged Cassandra's circle while Cole and I faced Malachar.
He was fast. Faster than anything I'd ever fought.
I dodged a blast of dark energy and countered with a slash of claws. He blocked easily.
"Impressive," he said. "But ultimately futile."
He gestured and I was lifted off the ground, invisible hands squeezing my throat.
Cole attacked from the side. Malachar swatted him away like an insect.
"Stop!" I choked out.
"Why would I do that?" Malachar tilted his head. "I've spent decades preparing for this moment. Gathering power. Building followers. All for this."
"For what?"
"For you." He pulled me closer. "You're going to open the door, Luna Eclipse. The one your bloodline has kept locked for centuries."
"I don't know what you're talking about!"
"You will."
He placed a hand on my mark.
Pain exploded through me. Worse than anything I'd felt before.
The otherworld connection went haywire, surging and receding wildly.
I screamed.
Through the pain, I heard my friends fighting. Heard Cole shouting my name.
Malachar was doing something to my mark. Forcing it open, pulling at the power inside.
"There it is," he breathed. "The door. Just as the prophecy said."
I didn't know what door he meant. Didn't care.
I reached for Miguel's essence in my mark, for the power of the fallen Eclipse wolves, for everything I had.
And I pushed back.
The explosion threw Malachar backward.
I fell to the ground, gasping.
Cole was beside me instantly. "Luna!"
"I'm okay. He's trying to use my mark to open something."
"Open what?"
"I don't know!"
Malachar was already standing. He looked annoyed but not hurt.
"You can't stop this, little wolf. The door will open. If not tonight, then soon."
He raised both hands and the clearing filled with dark magic.
"Retreat!" Cole shouted.
We ran.
Cassandra's circle scattered, apparently not prepared for actual combat.
We made it back to campus barely ahead of the spreading darkness.
The wards flared as Malachar's magic hit them, holding but straining.
"What the hell was that?" Nova demanded once we were safe.
"I don't know," I admitted. "But he said something about a door. About my bloodline keeping it locked."
"The otherworld gate," Sienna said suddenly. "It has to be. There are legends about Eclipse wolves being guardians of the barrier between worlds."
"Great. So I'm not just powerful. I'm also a key to some mystical door."
"Apparently."
I looked back at the forest. Malachar's magic was still visible, dark tendrils testing the wards.
"He'll be back," Cole said quietly.
"I know."
"And next time, he'll be prepared for your power."
"I know that too."
We headed toward the administrative building to report what had happened.
My mark was burning, pulsing with residual energy from Malachar's touch.
Whatever door he wanted to open, I could feel it now. A barrier inside my mark, holding something back.
Something powerful.
Something that wanted to be free.
And I had no idea how to stop it.
