Chapter 41 The Shattered Forest
Liam POV
The heavy camp flashlights cut jagged beams through the thick, creeping fog as we sprinted back from our perimeter task. We had just reached the main path when one of the students from Elena's group came barreling out of the dense underbrush, his face completely with pure panic.
He collided with Daniel, nearly knocking him into the mud before he could even find his breath to speak."A massive wolf attacked us near the ridge, and everyone scattered into the deep bush!" he gasped out frantically to the gathering crowd of students and camp guides. "It jumped right out of the shadows, and I lost sight of Elena and Sera while we were running for our lives!"
The words hit me like a physical blow, making my lungs seize up instantly. "Where is Elena?" I demanded, grabbing the front of his jacket and shaking him with a desperation that surprised even myself. He could only shake his head blindly, stammering that everything had happened too fast in the darkness.
Daniel shoved past us without a word, his flashlight beam slicing frantically through the thick thickets of the forest. "We split up and look for her now!" he yelled back over his shoulder, his voice tight with an anger that barely masked his fear. I dropped Marcus and dove headfirst into the shadows, the thorns ripping at my skin as I screamed her name into the void.
"Keep moving toward the stone wall!" an instructor yelled from the left flank as the group fanned out. My heart hammered violently against my ribs as I ignored the thorns tearing at my skin.
The forest seemed to swallow my voice, offering nothing back but the eerie, suffocating whistle of the wind. We searched for what felt like agonizing hours, the panic building in my throat like a physical wall. Every shadow looked like a predator, and every rustle of the leaves made my heart violently hammer against my ribs.
Suddenly, my flashlight beam caught a flash of a bright school uniform pressed against the massive stone structure. I broke away from the crowd into a full sprint, my boots skidding wildly on the wet roots.
Elena was swaying precariously on her feet, her eyes glassy and completely distant. Before the rest of the search party could reach us, her knees completely buckled beneath her weight.
I lunged forward with everything I had left, catching her a split second before she hit the jagged rocks. "Elena! Stay with me! Elena!" I shouted, my voice cracking with a pure terror that echoed through the woods.
"Over here!" Daniel’s sharp shout drew the attention of the instructors and nearby students. The crowd immediately swarmed the base of the stone wall, their flashlights illuminating the damp earth.
Sera was lying face-down in the dirt, her body completely motionless and eerily silent. A collective gasp rippled through the massive crowd of students as the lights fully exposed her condition.
The entire front of her uniform was completely soaked in thick, dark blood. "Is she alive?" a student from the back screamed, sparking a wave of frantic murmurs among the onlookers.
Daniel knelt down quickly and pressed his fingers against her neck to check for a pulse. "She's breathing, but it's shallow," he called out to the lead camp instructor.
The main guide pushed through the crowd with a medical stretcher, commanding everyone to make a clear path immediately. I hoisted Elena securely against my chest, shielding her from the flashing lights and the frantic whispers of the student body.
We rushed them back toward the main camp, surrounded by the tense, murmuring crowd. The terrifying imagery of the blood-soaked uniform hung heavily over every single witness.
…………..
Daniel and I stood like statues under the dim, buzzing light outside the main medical tent. Neither of us said a word, our heavy silence filled only by the distant, anxious murmurs of the remaining students. We were completely lost in our own chaotic thoughts, staring blankly at the canvas flap where the nurse had vanished.
Suddenly, the heavy canvas door swung open with a sharp, echoing snap. Daniel and I lunged forward in unison, instantly barring the nurse's path with a frantic desperation. We bombarded her with a barrage of rapid-fire questions, demanding to know if they had finally opened their eyes.
The nurse raised her hands calmly, gesturing for us to lower our frantic voices. "Elena simply fainted from sheer exhaustion and absolute terror," she assured us with a comforting nod. "Once she wakes up, her vitals will stabilize and her body will be completely fine."
A profound sense of relief washed over me, instantly clearing the suffocating weight from my chest. Hearing that she was out of any real physical danger allowed me to breathe normally for the first time all night. My mind finally settled into a peaceful state as I looked past the nurse's shoulder.
Daniel stepped forward, his eyes narrowing with a dark, persistent suspicion. "What about Sera?" he demanded sharply, crossing his arms over his chest. "Hope her wound is not deep?"
The nurse’s expression turned deeply puzzled, her brow furrowing as she looked down at her notes. "There is not a single wound on her body, meaning the blood on her clothes does not belong to her," she revealed quietly. "You may both go inside to see them now, but you must ensure you do not make any noise."
We slipped through the canvas opening, our careful footsteps completely silent against the fabric floor. Elena was resting peacefully under a heavy blanket, her pale face finally regaining a hint of natural color. My eyes immediately drifted to the adjacent cot where Sera was lying perfectly still.
Sera's eyes suddenly snapped open, staring directly up at the tent ceiling with a blank, hollow expression. She turned her head slowly toward us as our shadows fell across her tightly drawn sheets.
"Who are you people?" she asked, her voice carrying a fragile, trembling innocence that felt entirely wrong. "Where am I, and what happened to me?"
