Chapter 18: The Accident Four Years Ago

"If I hadn't been quick enough to protect my head back then, it wouldn't have just been my foot that got hurt. Isaac, what evidence do you have to prove that she wasn't trying to kill me?" Nora's eyes welled up with tears, her voice shaking.

"Kalista just momentarily lost her mind." Isaac avoided her gaze, not looking directly at Nora anymore.

"She pushed me down the stairs and tried to frame me..." Nora's emotions surged, and she choked up, unable to continue.

"I'll look into the false testimony. Don't jump to conclusions about Kalista; she doesn't even remember what happened. Let's just drop this." Isaac's tone was firm, cutting off Nora's words.

"Isaac, don't be so biased. You always believe her, but you never believe me?" Nora looked at Isaac in disbelief.

"When the accident happened, I called you, and you didn't even bother to check before hanging up. Even a stranger would help, right?" Nora said sadly.

Isaac stayed silent, but his face showed he was troubled.

"Isaac, give it up. I'm not letting this go." Nora couldn't hold back anymore, gritting her teeth as she spoke.

Isaac rubbed his temples. "Nora, how much money would it take for you to forgive Kalista? Or is there something else you want? Just say it, and I'll make it happen."

"I don't want anything." Nora sneered. "I just want Kalista to get what she deserves. Isaac, go ahead and find other ways to protect your Kalista. I'm not giving up on holding her accountable."

They were at an impasse.

A few minutes later, Isaac stood up and left Nora's hospital room without a word.

After he left, Nora couldn't control her emotions anymore and burst into tears.

Mortimer gently pushed open the door to the hospital room. Seeing Nora's tear-streaked face, his heart tightened, and he walked over to sit beside her.

"Nora, you have to stop loving Isaac. It's only causing you endless pain," Mortimer said softly, his eyes full of sorrow.

Nora looked up, tears streaming down her cheeks. She seemed a bit lost. "How can I stop loving him? I'm used to it. Without him, I feel lost in my world."

Mortimer sighed, lightly touching her cold hand. "But all he gives you is pain. Why not try to let go of your feelings for him?"

Nora closed her eyes, her voice weak. "Habits become second nature. Even if it hurts, I'm willing to endure it. But from now on, I'll try to change, to love myself."

She had less than three months to live. If she couldn't learn to love herself, what would be left of her life?

Mortimer was relieved to hear her say this and quietly stayed with her.

Around four in the afternoon, Mortimer had to leave for some matters. Nora, thinking that Steve was about to get off work, contacted him on her phone.

At that moment, an unexpected person appeared in Nora's hospital room.

When the door was knocked, Nora looked through the glass partition to see Harold.

Nora was surprised. "Harold? It's you! Come in!"

Harold walked in with a smile, pulling out a bouquet of flowers from behind his back like a magician.

"These are for you, Nora. Do you like them?" Harold asked.

The bouquet, made up of sunflowers and carnations, added a bright splash of color to the hospital room, blending perfectly with the golden light of the setting sun.

Nora finally smiled as she took the flowers with both hands, genuinely thanking Harold. "Harold, thank you for the flowers. I really like them."

She placed the flowers on the bedside table and poured Harold a glass of water.

Harold took the glass, hesitating for a moment before speaking. "Nora, I heard about the accident with Kalista. And you're planning to take legal action against her?"

Nora's smile faded, feeling displeased. "Harold, are you here to speak on Isaac's behalf? Do you also believe Kalista is innocent?"

Harold shook his head. "I don't know if Kalista is innocent. I'm here to tell you something. It's about Kalista, Isaac, and you."

"About the three of us?" Nora was puzzled. "What is it?"

Harold said, "Do you remember four years ago when you left Isaac? Isaac, after drinking, found out you left and drove to chase after you. That night, it rained heavily, and he had a car accident on the overpass. Kalista happened to pass by and saved Isaac. When she found out he had lost a lot of blood and had no will to live, she didn't hesitate to give him a blood transfusion. Without Kalista, there would be no Isaac as he is today."

Harold saw Nora freeze and sighed. "So you understand why I want you to not pursue Kalista, right?"

Did such things genuinely happen four years ago?

Nora's face turned pale as she recalled that time. She remembered that late at night, Isaac had called her.

He asked, "If I were about to die, would you come to see me?"

The memory of that night was blurry. At that time, she was determined to escape her current situation. She remembered that she seemed to say, "Then I'll see you at your grave after you die." To sever ties with him, she had said the most hurtful words. But she had no idea that Isaac had just been in a car accident.

Harold said that when Kalista saved him, he had no will to live because of her!

Nora finally pieced everything together, feeling a chill all over.

She curled up on the bed, hugging her knees, not even noticing the blood returning to her IV.

Isaac, wearing a full-face mask, walked in and saw Nora like this. He called out to her anxiously, but Nora didn't respond at all, so he urgently called for a doctor.

The doctor quickly gave her a sedative.

The doctor scolded him, "What kind of shock did the patient just experience? You family members are so careless! Her wounds haven't even healed yet. Try to discuss things later."

Isaac didn't know what had happened. Hearing the doctor's reprimand, he didn't get angry for once. He nodded and asked many questions concerning the precautions to be taken.

After the doctor left, Nora, who had been given the sedative, had fallen into a deep sleep.

Isaac sighed in relief, holding her hand that wasn't connected to the IV, gently patting it to comfort her.

But he hadn't relaxed for long when Nora, who was sleeping, suddenly started trembling, cold sweat forming on her forehead.

She mumbled, and Isaac leaned in to listen, only catching a few faint words like "I'm sorry, Isaac."
