Chapter 16: The Victim Is Nora!

"You didn't lose your memory at all, did you? Kalista, you even found the witness!" Nora was somewhat losing her temper.

"Nora, what are you talking about? Didn't a witness see our argument? I just wanted you to admit your mistake." Kalista nervously hid behind Isaac, who stepped forward to shield her from Nora's intense glare.

Isaac said, "Nora, don't scare Kalista. To this point, you need to cooperate with the police investigation."

Nora felt a sharp pain in her heart.

She knew Isaac loved Kalista, but she didn't expect him to be so blind.

The elevator dinged as it reached the first floor.

When the police led Nora outside, she followed them step by step, feeling hopeless.

Just as they were about to walk out of the hospital, Mortimer suddenly appeared and stopped everyone. "Wait! I have new evidence!"

"Mortimer! How dare you show up here!" Isaac lost his composure the moment he saw Mortimer.

"Hold on, let's deal with Nora's matter first. You don't want her to be wrongfully imprisoned, do you?" Mortimer stopped Isaac and looked at the officers. "Officers, may I ask if your witness only provided a statement without any other evidence?"

The officers exchanged glances and cautiously said, "Indeed, but we have thoroughly verified the witness's identity. Their presence at the scene is logically consistent, making fabrication highly unlikely."

Mortimer quickly said, "But as long as it's a statement, there's a possibility of fabrication. Is your witness the hotel cleaner responsible for the sixth floor, Mandy Perry?"

The officers frowned, their first reaction being that Mortimer had obtained their witness's identity information through illegal means.

But Mortimer's next words explained the situation. "When I went to the hotel today, I discovered that the hotel lobby manager, Trent Russell, had just bought a luxury car worth $1 million in full. But I investigated and found that the hotel lobby manager's monthly salary is only $8k, so it's impossible for him to afford a million-dollar car in full. And upon further investigation, I found out that his mother also works at the hotel, and she is the cleaner responsible for the sixth floor, Mandy!"

Mortimer added, "If Mandy is the witness in this case, I have reason to doubt the authenticity of her statement."

The officers' expressions changed instantly because Mortimer was right; the witness was Mandy.

"We will have further investigation, but for now, we still need Ms. Foster to come with us to the police station." The officers did not relent.

Mortimer became anxious, "Besides that, I also have video evidence!"

Kalista's expression changed, and she frantically recalled where the argument could have been recorded.

But after thinking it over, she could only think of the stairwell surveillance.

Damn it, didn't those useless police say the surveillance was broken?

Upon hearing there was video evidence, the officers' attitudes began to soften.

Mortimer took out his phone and played a recently obtained video.

Kalista panicked, grabbing Isaac's hand and saying, "Isaac, could it be that Nora made fake evidence to escape responsibility?"

Isaac, looking stern, stared at Mortimer, who was standing protectively. Beside him, Nora leaned heavily on his shoulder, her injured leg making it hard to stand.

Isaac didn't catch what Kalista said.

It wasn't until Kalista shook his hand again that Isaac snapped out of it. He impatiently shook off her hand and said, "Alright, I got it."

Meanwhile, Mortimer played the video.

The video started with the owner complaining with someone about the lack of recent celebrity gossip.

Because the conversation was sensitive, the video owner immediately muted the other person upon hearing the stairwell door's noise.

Then Kalista's malicious voice was heard.

"Hey? The photos can be sent now. This time, I must ruin Nora's reputation!"

The video owner, who was a paparazzo, immediately sensed a scoop and discreetly pointed the phone's camera upstairs.

Due to the dim lighting in the stairwell, the video was unclear and shaky, but Kalista's features were still recognizable.

Soon, Nora's figure appeared in the video as she pushed open the door.

The two argued verbally at first, and then Nora tried to leave.

With Kalista's shout, "Tell Isaac? Don't even think about it" and Nora's exclamation, "What are you doing!" the two figures tumbled down the stairs.

The video then showed the owner quickly fleeing and turning off the camera.

No one expected the events to unfold this way.

The officers watched the video of the two falling down the stairs repeatedly and had to admit that Kalista had pushed Nora first, and Nora had instinctively grabbed Kalista's clothes, causing them both to fall.

From the moment the video started, Kalista stood there as if her soul had left her body, her face pale.

She never expected that her supposedly hidden actions had been completely recorded.

Now, all eyes were on her. Kalista's lips trembled, her hands hanging limply at her sides. "It wasn't me; it wasn't me."

Nora's eyes turned red, and if Mortimer hadn't held her back, she would have slapped Kalista.

But Kalista continued to argue, "Isaac, I don't remember. How could it be like this? I must have been too angry at Nora for betraying you. I was wrong!"

As she spoke, she pretended to faint, falling backward.

Isaac quickly caught Kalista, gave Nora and Mortimer a heavy look, "Kalista is unwell right now, so all investigations should be temporarily halted!" Then he carried Kalista away.

!"

After Isaac left, Nora couldn't hold back her tears and cried.

With the suspicion cleared, Nora felt weak and almost couldn't stand. Mortimer supported her, and an observant female officer brought a wheelchair for her to rest.

The female officer asked, "Ms. Foster, Ms. Garcia's actions can be charged as attempted murder or intentional injury. Do you intend to pursue charges against her?"

Life was unpredictable; just one video turned the victim and perpetrator roles around.

Nora had no intention of forgiving Kalista. Her voice was hoarse but firm, "I want to hold Kalista accountable for everything, including intentional injury and malicious defamation!"
