Chapter 128
A new beginning.
Scarlett's POV.
"You're in the in-between," the moon goddess stated. My "body" or what was supposed to be my body shook as the weight of her words sunk in. All I could hear was that I wasn't dead but I wasn't far from it either.
"Do not panic," she said again, her presence enveloping me as she sensed my fear.
"It's not your time to go. You still have a lot of things to accomplish, so you will be sent back," her words washed over me but I made little sense of them. I was near dead, and for how long I had been here, I didn't know. Was it still possible to be sent back?
"I can see you are still skeptical, but be rest assured that I will send you back. I brought you here in the first place, didn't I?" I knew she spoke the truth, though I had no memory of her bringing me here.
"When will I be sent back?" My voice echoed into the chasm of space and she rumbled back, "soon."
The fog that swirled around stilled, then rushed towards me, covering me with it's frost and calm. Very soon I couldn't see anything, and the wild beating of my heart rushed through my ears as I tried to make sense of what was happening. Was I going back now?
As if to answer my question, her voice rumbled again, this time, it was a warm caress against my being, reassuring me.
"You are going back now. And remember Scarlett, you didn't die because you still have a purpose. Find that purpose. Remember that I am always here with you even if you cannot see me.i would never forsake any of my children that call upon me." Tears welled up in my eyes at her words. I felt seen and heard.
"Now go." Her words swirled around me, echoing before fading away into nothingess. Or was I the one fading because everything was going dark. Another coherent thought never came because was knocked out unconscious.
Find my purpose... Find my purpose... Seek the truth, another voice whispered to me and I mumbled to myself. I turned to my side, my face touching a cool surface and I snuggled into the sheets... Sheets?
My eyes shot opened but I closed them immediately because even something like ordinary sunlight nearly blinded me.
"It's... Too bright," I muttered, hissing in pain as my eyes stung. My throat was beyond parched and it had taken a lot of effort to mutter a few words. I cracked an eye open, adjusting slowly to the light before opening my second eye. I let out a sigh of relief. Beads of sweat rolled down either side of my face from the effort it had taken alone, but that wasn't my concern now as only one thing crossed my mind. I needed water, and I needed it badly.
A quick glance at the bedside table revealed nothing but an vase filled with sunflowers and a piece of cloth. No water. I flicked my eyes around the room, looking for a jug of something and it was then it dawned on me that I had no idea where I was.
Was I still in the Hidden Moon Pack? And who had succeeded in the battle?
I sighed, a lump forming in my throat as electricity zinged up and down my legs. Could I even stand if I tried? I bit he inside of my cheek, thought out a quick prayer then mustered myself into a sitting position.
"Crap!" My legs were nothing compared to the burning in my side, my back ached badly too, and my vision turned painful as I tried to keep tears at bay.
"Hey now, you aren't supposed to be moving around much!" A woman rushed through the door that has been cracked open, a tray in her hands as she did so.
"S... Sorry." She dropped the tray in there bedside table, waving a hand in dismissal.as a soft smile formed on her face.
"Why would you be sorry, honey? On the contrary, I should be the one telling you that." She reminded me of my Mother and an easy smile grew in her face. She looked over me for a few seconds before her eyebrows rose.
"Right, you must be thirsty, parched even." She wasted no time in handing me a glass, but I nearly spilled it.
"Your muscles are weak too," she said, more to herself than to me. She pulled a chair close to the bed before sitting and helping me drink the water. It was a slow process because my throat had also forgotten how to swallow, but the woman assured me that it was completely normal after sleeping for such a long time.
"Is that enough for you, honey?" She asked and I nodded, no longer trusting my voice. She set the glass in the tray, not taking her eyes off me.
"How do you feel?" Feel? I felt like a wild beast had rammed into me over and over until I couldn't feel myself anymore.
"S... Sore, but okay," I told her, my words coming out smoother this time around.
"Good, good," she hummed to herself.
"May I?" She asked but I didn't know what she was asking permission for. She gestured to my body and my mouth formed into an "o".
"Sure." She nodded, then went about it, her jovial expression becoming more serious as she examined my legs, arms and upper body. She gave me a sympathetic smile before rasing up my shirt and examining what I now realized were bandages plastered to my body.
"All good," she mumbled. "Now time for you back. Oh, and sorry about this." I gritted my teeth, preparing myself for the burning pain. My back injury was much worse and I didn't want to think about the grotesque scar that would be left behind after. A hiss left my lips as soon as she made contact, and she sent a flurry of apologies at me.
"There now, it's over," she said slowly. I breathed heavily, as though I had been tortured.
"Just breathe slowly," she instructed and I obeyed.
"Good, good." She made herself more comfortable in her chair before clasping her hands together.
"Do you think you can eat something as well?
