Chapter 125
Girl to girl talk.
Clara's POV.
"Are you okay?" I asked. He didn't answer me immediately, his gaze set on something in front of us that only he could see. It took a lot of effort not to rip my claws through the sheets so I kept my hand tightly closed in a fist, while the other stayed on his arm, stroking him.
It pissed me off more than anything that we were having a conversation in that damned Omega's room of all places, but I couldn't be a chooser now.
"More or less," he replied vaguely, breaking me out of my thoughts. I stared at his side profile closely, his strong features set into an even harder line than normal. He was tense, and I hated it more than anything that I knew the reason why.
"It's Scarlett isn't it?" It's not like I didn't know the answer, but I needed to hear it from him. The pack and my Father had served as sufficient sources for his he was feeling because he had locked himself away for a while and it had taken a lot to get him to act remotely okay.
He didn't say anything, but his subtle nod caught me clutching for my breath and I did my best to hide it. I couldn't even suck in a breath because I wouldn't dare breathe in the stale scent of that Omega. I settled on trying to control my breathing while thinking of what to say.
"Oh..." I let out for lack of nothing better to say. I knew if I opened my mouth again, it would have something to do with that Omega and the words would not be pretty. I placed my hands on his and squeezed instead, the meat I could do was offer some "comfort" for the mate he had lost. I stared around the room, thinking of how I was going to strip the place bare once I became the official Luna of the pack.
My heart fluttered when my plan worked. He leaned into me and started stroking my arm. I almost died trying to ask normal.
"Thank you for always being here for me even when I push you away," he said, and I could've melted right there.
"You're welcome. And I would do it again." I flashed him a small smile and he chuckled.
"You're always know how to lift my spirits," he added after a pause. A half second later, he was down again with his shoulders dropped and his eyes looking somewhere else. My mood soured along with his own and I started to wonder if I had done something wrong and maybe that was the reason that no matter what I did, I remained invisible in his eyes. I was sick of it. The shadows of that damned Omega seemed to cover any effort I made into having him because she was always occupying his mind.
"Clara, is something wrong?" His voice caught me off guard and I blinked a couple of times before paying proper attention to him.
"No, no. I'm fine," I rushed out and Derek quirked a brow, nod feeling convinced. He ran his gaze across me before stopping to look at me in my mind.
"Clara, don't make me pry that information out of you."
"But I'm really fine. I was just thinking about everything that had happened a month ago," I lied through my teeth. No one died in our pack so that was good enough.
Derek's previously hard gaze softened as he heard my words and he sighed, brushing his hand across my forehead and sweeping whisps of hair behind my ear.
"There's no reason for you to be worried about, everything has been taken care of." I nodded a reply and let out a breath.
"And that also goes for you too," I said.
"I... Don't think I follow. What are you talking about?"
"The situation with Scarlett," I started softly, and when I didn't feel him pulling away, I became a little bolder with it and continued. "I don't see how we can make anytime happen anymore because she's... Gone and she's not coming back," I finished with a firmer voice and I muttered words requesting help from above because I didn't want to ruin our relationship over that Omega.
Derek could have played being a statue with how stiff he was. He didn't look at me either and I wondered whether I had screwed myself over already. His breathing was heavy enough that it filled the damned room but that was because neither of us were saying anything. Choking tension pulsed in the air and if a really good knife was brought in, then it would slice through that said tension like butter.
"Derek, please say something?" I begged because I couldn't take the deafening silence anymore or worse, the lack of expression on his face. His mouth remained stubbornly shut and I took the risk to look him square in the face instead of the little peeks I had been taken of him.
"Derek?" My voice cracked but I needed to pull myself together. There were no I would cry now of all places.
"I agree with you," he said slowly and it was my turn to pause. He said he had agreed to what I said about Scarlett and him but it sounded too good trud so I had to give it time to.
"Really?"
"Hmm." He closed his eyes and I took the time to study him. I hadn't expected that answer from him, in fact, I had expected the exact opposite with some yellings involved as well.
"What, is that so hard to believe?" He asked again, his eyes bouncing over my face and I immediately knew my face wasn't as expressionless as I would like it to be.
"If I'm being honest with you, then yes it is hard to believe."
"Scarlett left me so it's hard to know if I can really trust someone after what she did, but I'm not ignorant about other factors."
"Trust huh?"
