Chapter 29

Alyssa POV

My nerves was all jumbled together on my way here, even as I stand outside Micah home, on the sidewalk I still didn't understand what I was feeling. I was not comfortable in my own skin. It felt like there was an itch inside my skin and that I can't reach it, I have a nagging thought that something important was happening today but I didn't know what. It was getting hard in just ignoring what I am feeling. I wish I could ignore it but I can't.

I took in a deep breath and released it, repeated the exercise a few more times before I decided I was ready to go face Micah. He might have hurt my feelings but I refuse to let my mind dwell on that. I will not allow my attitude to get the best of me. I will be there for him because I know that he will be there for me too.

As I turned to move towards the door, that was how the door opened from the inside and Micah's mother rushed out with a carton of random things that doesn't look like it was packed well. It looked like it was all thrown inside the box with a rush and checked off a list that was used to park the things.

“Good morning Mrs. Vegas.” I greeted and Micah's mother went still in shock and the box slide out of her hands and fell to the floor spilling out its contents. What landed closed to me what an envelope written in Micah's handwriting? Yes, I do know Micah's handwriting. Sue me, it is very neat and beautiful.

“What’s this?" I picked it up admits the protests of Micah's mother so that I can read what is written on the back. Gosh, she didn't need to shout as if I had just broken a scared rule. It is not like I want to open the envelope and read what is inside. All I wanted to do was read the back.

With that I turned the envelope and saw what turned my blood cold. Written on the envelope where the words "Micah's Will," I raised my eyes to stared at Micah's mother and saw her face looking stricken, she looked like she has lost a lot of weight because her clothes were barely hanging on her body frame. Then I remembered back to the time when Celine took a break from the squad for family reasons and the excuse that she wants to focus on her grades. That is a lie. She doesn't need to concentrate, none of them need to, although Micah is very good when it comes to educational stuff, his siblings are just as good as him too only that he is just a tad little bit better than them. The Vegas are blessed with good brains.

My mouth was dried when I realized what is happening, I swallowed a couple of times but words still refuse to come out from my mouth. I cleared my throat as I thought about the way Micah twitched on the floor and his unnatural migraines. I looked at Mrs. Vegas' face to see her crying silently while I come to the conclusion that I have been trying to avoid.

Micah was not fine and it is serious. With my throat working overtime I managed to produce some words from my throat... “Is it Micah that the surgery is for?”

Her brows wrinkled probably in thought about how I knew about the surgery. “Yes.” She nodded. “He has germinoma." she whispers as more tears fell from her closed eyes.

"What is that?” I asked worriedly but still numb.

“Germ cell tumor, it was found in his brain.” Micah's mom replied and with her reply, my legs lost the ability to keep up with my weight. I fell on the floor feeling numb as I looked at her hoping and praying that it was all a big prank, that any moment soon that Micah will jump out of the house behind his mother and shout surprise in my face then hug me and apologize for scaring me so badly.

“It can't be.” I breathed as I looked at Micah's mother who was starting to blur because of the tears in my eyes. “Tell me that this is a dream or an elaborated prank that is meant to make Micah and Mike to bond together.” I said to Micah's mother begging her with my gaze not to prove me false.

She cried some more and I felt more wetness on my cheeks, I hadn't even realized that I was also crying alongside with her. She shook her head as she cleaned her face. "I wish that it was a lie, I wish it is a dream every morning I wake up. I wish it was a prank but no, this is my reality now, our reality. "

The sudden surge of anger in me had me shouting at her. “Then why didn't you tell me, why didn't any one of you tell me. You agreed to keep me away from my best friend even though it might have been his wish, you didn't have to do everything he told you to. “I screamed out loud before releasing a heart wrenching sob. I would like to say I handled it like a pro but I didn't, I cried and those were not pretty tears. I tried to imagine my life with Micah but I could not, if anything happened to him, I would be gone too, sure I would still be alive but I would stop living, I would just be existing.

After a while of crying, I felt hands go around me and knew that it was Micah's mom offering me comfort. Her cries were noticeable now, it was not so quiet but then again we could not control our sorrow, we were both weeping for a boy that holds a space in our hearts, a space that no one else can fill.

“We need to go to the hospital. He will soon go under anesthesia. “Mrs. Vegas whispered in my hair after a while of us rocking and crying.

“Yes. Let's go. “I second, with that we pulled ourselves up and arranged the things back into the carton and went to the car together. I stayed in the front seat while Micah's mother drove and we held on to each other hand as she drove. We were two females who are drawing strength from each other as the man we love is going into the theatre to fight for his life and a chance of normalcy.
