CHAPTER 70

CHAPTER 70
CARLA'S POV

Alec disconnected my phone and threw it into the beach about ten minutes into our drive. I didn’t have to ask why because it was clear his phone had the extra security mine didn’t.

Someone tried to kill us. I took a slow, steadying breath that did nothing to quell the storm that came with that thought.

I was ready to take extra precautions, and I needed to be safe so I would be able to get back home to my children.

We stopped at a gas station, and he lent me his phone. He went inside to grab something while I stayed outside, talking to Bertram, who was losing his mind.

“What the fuck, Carla. I never should have left you. Are you sure you are okay? Just tell me where you are and I’ll be there right now.” He demanded, and I shook my head, “I’m fine, Bert. I’m fine. I need you with my children. I need to know they are safe.”

My eyes burned with tears. As much as I wanted to say this wasn’t what I signed up for, it was. It was just a temporary difficulty. We would be fine. I will see my children very soon.

Or maybe I'm being naive and should abort this mission immediately, because it was becoming obvious how dangerous this plan of Alec and me was.
But then, to what end? Uncle Viktor wasn't a man who knew how to give up. He will do everything to ensure I'm gone from this world, that's the only time his clench on my father's empire would be permanent.

“It is okay, Carla,” I heard Bertram's concerned voice, “Your children will be safe. Don’t worry.” He promised me, and I nodded, pushing back tears.

“Please take care of yourself, Carla.” Vivi spoke into the phone as well, “Be very careful with Alec, because all these things look very fishy to me. Why does he have his phone, and yours is gone? Do you even know where you are going? One of his enemies probably attacked. I’m not sure I like him anymore. His job was to keep you safe, and he fucking failed. What good is he?”

She was really pissed, understandably so, but the fault wasn’t Alec’s.

“Calm down Vivi, there's more to the story and this is the safest choice okay? When we get home, we will talk at length about it. For now, keep my children safe, alright?” I insisted, emphasising the importance.

“Don’t worry,” Vivi assured me, and I nodded. My heart was so heavy.

Alec walked to me, carrying two bags. He dropped it in the car and got in. I watched him through the window as he spoke to Bert, assuring him that he would protect me no matter what. I exhaled and leaned against the car seat. I let my hair down. I didn’t know where we were going in particular, but I knew he would keep me safe.

Soon, we were back on the road. I was very nervous when we had to take a boat to the Island, but Alec held my hand. Taking a boat to an unknown Island in the middle of the night was so fucking odd, but I had to be protected. I closed my eyes all through it, burrowing into Alec’s side.

He woke me up when we got to shore. I tried to help him with the bags, but he wouldn’t allow it.

Under the moonlight, the sea shone a glassy blue. The air smelled sweet, and I exhaled softly. I was still in my black dress and jewellery.
‘How insane how tonight had gone,’ I thought as I followed my saviour towards the cabin.

It was nestled among the trees. There were other cabins around, but ours was detached, closer to the woods, which I appreciated. It was not too isolated, but just enough for us.
Alec helped me onto the porch. I watched as he pulled out a key from the flower vase and opened the door.

Warmth filled me as we entered the cabin. He turned on a switch, and everywhere was illuminated. It was very cosy.
He lit the fireplace, filling the room with a warm glow.

“Come on. I know you are tired,” He murmured, and I followed him into the bedroom. My mouth fell open because the cabin was an example of not judging a book by its cover. It was so beautiful on the inside. The bedroom was much more beautiful. I wanted something like this for my children and me, but bigger, of course.

“So, you like it?” He chuckled, leaning against the wall.

“I like it very much. This is beautiful. You’ll tell me all about it eventually, but first, I need a bath.” I yawned as I packed my hair in a bun.

He opened a door to reveal the bathroom. It was big with a shower.

“I’ll make you something to eat.” He said, stepping backwards, and I frowned, “I’m not hungry. Food is the last thing on my mind.”

“If you are sure, then, goodnight.” He headed for the door, and I stopped him. “Is there a second bedroom here?”

“No, I’ll sleep on the couch. There is only one bed.” He scratched his head sheepishly, his cheeks colouring.

My eyes widened in understanding. There was only one bed. And there were two of us. Sharing a bed would cross a line. However, I’d think we’d throw away the rules given the situation.

“I can manage on the couch.” He insisted, and I scoffed, “You are not fitting on that couch,” I scoffed.

Even if he could, I felt bad letting him suffer on my account considering he'd gone through so much on my behalf tonight. It's me my uncle was after, but he was the one whose soldiers were battling my enemies out there.

“I’m not letting you sleep on the couch, Alec,” I stated, glancing at the bed. It was big enough for us.

“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable, Carla.” He exhaled, his voice strained.

I shook my head.
“You can’t make me uncomfortable. Can we just go to sleep already? I’ll take a quick shower, and then you do the same. I’ll probably be half asleep by the time you come back. Don’t think too much about it.”

“Are you sure?” He tilted his head, and I rolled my eyes, “I’ll throw my shoe at your head.”

He laughed, “Alright, alright. No reason to get violent. I’ll be outside.”

He walked out of the bedroom, giving me privacy, and I wondered if I’d bitten off more than I could chew.
