Chapter 159: Viral Revelations
Amelia POV
The fluorescent lights cast harsh shadows across Alex's face as he led me toward the examination room where Joker's body awaited.
"You're not going to like what I found," Alex said, pulling on latex gloves with practiced efficiency.
"I rarely like anything you find," I replied, settling into the metal chair beside his workstation. "But I always need to know."
Alex activated his computer terminal, pulling up a series of molecular diagrams that looked like abstract art rendered in scientific notation. "Joker's body is fascinating from a biological standpoint. Most of his DNA has been systematically destroyed, but there's a virus supporting normal metabolic functions."
He zoomed in on a cellular structure that pulsed with unnatural regularity. "This virus is identical to the pathogen from the Black Friday incident. Same genetic markers, same protein structure, same enzymatic pathways."
I leaned forward, studying the data streams cascading across multiple monitors. "Same virus, different application?"
"Exactly. But this version is far more sophisticated." Alex switched to a comparative analysis, showing side-by-side cellular samples. "Joker and the virus exist in a symbiotic relationship. His immune system doesn't attack the pathogen. The virus has been reprogrammed to mimic essential biological processes."
"Reprogrammed how?"
"The virus remains dormant most of the time, requiring specific triggers to maintain active states. I haven't identified the activation mechanism yet, but the dormant virus doesn't affect cognitive function. That's why Joker could maintain relative sanity for extended periods."
I shook my head, contradiction forming on my lips before Alex finished speaking. "Joker's cognitive function was anything but normal. The bastard was certifiably insane."
"That's where it gets interesting," Alex continued, pulling up behavioral analysis charts. "I think repeated viral activation created a psychological fracture. He'd oscillate between normal and abnormal states so frequently that his brain adapted by defaulting to abnormal behavior patterns, even when the virus was dormant."
The pattern made disturbing sense. Classical conditioning applied to neurochemistry—train the brain to expect chaos, and chaos becomes the baseline. "How does this compare to IBRA's archived samples?"
Alex overlaid the molecular structures, highlighting genetic differences with red markers. "Joker's virus is significantly more advanced. This represents multiple generations of cultivation and refinement since Black Friday. We're looking at years of dedicated research and development."
I felt my jaw tighten as the scope of Cain's operation became clearer. When I'd encountered that infected operative who could follow a single command, I'd assumed that represented the pinnacle of Cain's bioweapon research. But Joker proved how naive that assumption had been.
"Cain's research has progressed far beyond anything we previously understood," I said. "We're not dealing with crude experiments anymore."
"It gets worse," Alex said, his voice dropping to a clinical monotone. "There's evidence of viral mutations designed to prevent detection by standard medical scans. This thing could spread undetected through population centers."
The nightmare scenario began painting itself across my imagination. "Are we looking at potential outbreak conditions?"
Alex half-smiled, but there was no humor in it. "You mean zombie apocalypse? With current military technology, mindless undead wouldn't pose significant threats."
"That's not what worries me," I replied coldly. "I'm concerned about conscious, intelligent zombies. Imagine every infected person retaining Joker's awareness and madness."
"Speaking of that, there's another terrifying discovery about Joker." Alex's expression grew more serious as he pulled up additional data. "His cellular aging had completely stopped. His tissue samples show no deterioration consistent with his chronological age. Most likely caused by the virus as well."
I half-joked, "This viral technology could theoretically achieve 'extended lifespan in a certain sense'—maybe even create immortal, pain-free supersoldiers."
"Don't be naive. Human biological limits can't be breached so easily, especially without consequences. If this virus truly had no side effects, do you think Cain would still be holding back? He'd have already built an enhanced army."
I shrugged, remembering Joker's final words. "Joker claimed Cain's plan was nearly complete. Maybe he's already begun mass production."
"Then our great Dancer better move quickly to save us all," Alex said with mock reverence.
But I couldn't directly confront Cain yet. Joker was dead—our only witness to Cain's crimes had poisoned himself. I needed independent evidence linking Cain to the viral research, something that would justify a direct assault on his organization.
The abandoned laboratory in Myanmar represented our best lead. If I could find physical evidence of Cain's involvement, documentation of his experiments, or anything concrete connecting him to this bioweapon development...
My phone buzzed. Pilot's name appeared on the caller ID.
"Dancer."
"I've been tracking Accountant and Professor since their disappearance," Pilot's voice carried his usual directness. "Traced their movements to Myanmar, specifically to that abandoned facility you had Boxer's people secure. Local witnesses report seeing two people matching their descriptions lingering there for a while before disappearing again."
Perfect timing. Accountant's escape and her immediate journey to that specific facility couldn't be coincidental. If she was willing to risk exposure by visiting that location, it meant critical evidence was hidden there. "Wait for me there. I'm coming to Myanmar immediately."
"Copy that."
I returned to Jason's room to find him reviewing digital files on his tablet, his hospital bed adjusted to a sitting position.
"Alex finished his analysis," I reported, settling into the chair beside his bed and explaining everything.
Jason set aside his tablet, giving me his complete attention. "What's our next move?"
"Myanmar. Pilot tracked Accountant and Professor to the facility. Whether I find evidence connecting Cain to the viral research or not, I can't afford to wait longer. If Joker was right about Cain's timeline, I may need to mobilize Round Table forces for direct action."
"I'll have FSOD personnel positioned in Zone Omega," Jason said immediately. "We can coordinate timing."
"Recover first," I said firmly. "Let me handle Myanmar, then we move together."
Jason caught my hand as I stood up. "Come back to me."
"Always." I leaned forward to brush my lips against his before pulling back with a smile.
