Chapter 7 Rescue Mission
Alessia's POV
The masked men all rush to the window to peek out, gasping at what they see there. I can almost smell their fear.
“What is going on? The master said he won’t be here until .." one of the men says nervously, looking out the window again.
“Master said they will be here by nightfall…” another says fearfully.
Gunfire fills up the space, shaking the walls. The leader curses, dragging us up roughly, pointing his AK-49 rifle at us.
“Be quiet, all of you.Two of you start walking to the exit, now!”
Alex straightens slowly and then he laughs.
“Your time is up. I knew they would find us.”
The doors burst wide open. The men pour into the warehouse in droves. I count at least two dozen armed men in dark suits.
“Get down now, cara mia!” Alex roars. I fall down pulling Alex down with me as bullets start flying around as the men engage in a deadly battle. Men start shouting. One of the Sirranos’ men yanks us up again . .
“Start walking or you both die here !”
Alex quickly turns around, using our bound hands to push his gun to the ground. It goes off! the shot hitting a nearby beam.
I scream. “Oh Dios! Alexx!!”
“Kill them all now Bastardi!” their leader roars, already nursing a wounded shoulder yet still fighting two of Alex’s men.
“Not today,” Alex retorts as we start inching for the back door.
“Signore Ferrini!” one of Alex’s men shouts from the exit; he must’ve sprung it open.
“Go, sir, we have got your backs.”
Alex starts walking backwards with me facing the gunfire.
“Close all the exits! Make sure you get them all. No one makes it out alive Bastardi !” Alex barks as we reach the exit gate.
I hear knives clashing, shots going off, men screaming, bodies falling to the ground it’s a bloody mess. As we step out, a blade sails through the door, missing my face by a few inches.
“Aaaahh!” I shriek, shifting. Alex turns us around and uses his leg to kick the assailant back inside the warehouse.
“Lock the door now!” he tells the men waiting by the exit.
As the fresh air hits my face I realize that I will live another day. Relief overwhelms me and my legs fold beneath me, dragging Alex with me.
“Loosen our binds now,” he barks.
“Right away, Signore.” One man rushes forward and cuts them.
Alex holds me against his chest on the ground as the bloody war continues to rage around us.
“It’s okay. You will be fine ."he whispers to me as two of his men stand guard in front of us.
I hold on to him tightly staring into his dark eyes.
“You are the reason I am still calm.”
“I have got you, cara mia. No one lays a hand on what I have declared is mine and lives to see another day,” he growls darkly.
I shiver in fear. “But your men are winning. Must there be more bloodshed?” I ask.
He looks at me incredulously, still holding me in his arms.
“I never promised you that there will be no bloodshed. I only promised to get you out alive.”
I shiver, Reaching for my rosary and finding my wrist empty .. I must have lost it at the crash site.I face him again "Dios! and what about your salvation, Alex? How do you sleep having so much blood on your hands?”
He chuckles darkly. “I lost my soul a long time ago, cara mia. All I have left is my word. My word is my honour.”
Suddenly two thugs appear from another exit of the warehouse and lunge for us , one with a bat and the other with a gun.
“Stay vigilant, it’s not over yet! Attack!” Alex orders while he takes the hit from the bat. Grunting, he drops me gently and drags the bat, seizing it and hitting the man on his head.
“Arck!” He goes down instantly, blood oozing from his wound; his lifeless eyes meet mine and I flinch, looking away quickly.
The other fires a shot and one of Alex’s men goes down before the last man is shot in the head.
“Mannaggi ! Make sure none of them make it out alive!” Alex snarls, kicking them. He uses the bat and hits each one of them mercilessly until blood oozes from several wounds.
“Alex stop! You are behaving like them!” I scream at him.
“They hurt you. They all deserve to die!” Alex growls, his eyes full of anger.
“But they are dead already,” I whisper as blood sprays all over his clothes and the concrete floor. I stare in horror at the monster he has turned into.
He looks at me, his face filled with sweat and blood.
“Don’t worry. It’s almost over.”
My heart is pounding as He carries me and hides me behind a stack of crates. Bullets still flying everywhere.
“Stay inside here. I will be back.”
My whole body shaking as he turns to leave I ask . “Will we make it out alive?”
He turns around and looks at me again, his eyes cold and fierce. “We already have, cara mia. This is just cleaning up loose ends.”
Alex turns and takes a few steps as another man appears, dodging his punch by a few seconds.
“Shit!” Alex growls, kicking him and sending him sprawling to the ground. I watch from the safety of the crates.
“Signore, the second and third exit have been barricaded.”
“Good. Now burn the place down! Make sure no one lives to tell the tale!” Alex roars as his men light up the flames.
I gasp. “Alex noo! If you burn it what makes you different from them?” I cry out.
He turns and walks towards me. “The difference is, cara mia, that I win.”
Once a fire has been lit , He walks towards my hiding spot quickly and picks me up again like a child.
“We are leaving now, cara mia. My men will finish up here,” he mutters.
“Is it over?” I ask.
“Not by a long shot. This is just the beginning. I promised to get you out of this alive and I am fulfilling that promise.”
I sigh, leaning on his chest as he walks away from the raging fire and carnage.
As we arrive the front of the warhouse .A black limousine pulls to a stop by the curb . Its headlights illuminate us for a brief second and I flinch my heart skips a beat …
Dios What next?
