Chapter 46

Chapter 46
Aria

Jaxon, Roman, and I are escorted to a small exam room down the hall from the entrance and told to sit and wait for the doctor. The nurse barely looks at Jaxon’s bond mark, which makes me wonder if I should have bothered putting one there in the first place. Even the lady who checked us in didn’t seem to want any proof that he was bonded. Maybe I was overthinking this.

“How’s your neck?” I blurt out after the three of us had been sitting quietly in the room for several minutes.

Jaxon smiles at me and tilts his head so that his bond mark is easier to see. I’m sitting on a chair next to the bed they instructed him to sit on, so I have to stand to get a good look at it. I move to stand directly in front of him, and since I’m a little on the shorter side, I have to lift myself up on my toes a little to get a good look. His shirt is still a little in the way, so I carefully move it and look at the bite.

It’s already starting to heal, and looks pretty good actually. So I nod and let his shirt fall back into place.

“It looks good. Are you in any pain from it?” I ask.

He chuckles. “Are you a doctor now?”

I sigh and move to sit back down, but his arm shoots out and wraps around my waist. He tugs me closer to him until our faces are close enough that I could lean in and-

He closes the distance between us and kisses me. It’s not a quick peck but a slow, soft kiss that makes my legs shake just a little. Or maybe they're shaking because I’m almost on my tippy toes.

The sound of a knock startles me, and I pull away from him. He lets me go, and I quickly take my seat again.

“Come in!” I call out for some reason.

My face feels like it’s on fire!

A older man walks in and gives us a polite smile. Breathing in, I can tell he’s a Beta, thank goodness.

“Hello everyone. How are we doing today?” The doctor asks.

“Uh, well, he’s not doing too well. He injured his foot.” I say.

“Okay, can you tell me what happened. And I’ll just take a look at it.” He sits on a rolling stool and gets closer to Jaxon.

Jaxon lifts his foot, and the doctor slowly starts to unwrap it.

“Just a little mishap. It’s really not that bad. The pain hasn’t been too bad.” He waves his hand in the air as if he’s trying to scare away the lies or something.

The doctor finishes unwrapping his foot and makes a sound. “That doesn’t look too pretty. It looks like…an entrance wound. Did you get shot in the foot?”

His voice twists into one of surprise and confusion, but Jaxon just shrugs.

“Yeah, but like I said it was a mishap. An accident.”

The doctor looks at each of us as if he’s trying to find the lie in our faces.

“I’m legally bound to contact police whenever there is a bullet wound in the ER.” He says, and I immediately start to panic.

I try hard not to let it show on my face, but when I glance over at Roman, he gives me a look that I interpret as “stay calm”.

“Is that necessary?” Jaxon asks, sounding a little panicked as well.

“It’s our policy. For now, let me order a few X-rays to see what damage the bullet might have caused. Sit tight for a bit, and someone will come to escort you.” He rewraps Jaxon’s foot, gives us a polite smile, and walks out.

We stay quiet for a minute or two after he leaves, but then Jaxon is sliding off the exam bed and standing. I jump to my feet to stop him.

“What are you doing?” I ask him, pressing a hand to his chest to stop him.

“What do you mean? We have to get out of here! He’s calling the police.”

“Running away is only going to make us seem like we’re guilty of something. What we told him is the truth; it was an accident. If we try to sneak out, it will just bring more attention to us, and that’s the last thing we need right now.” Roman says.

Jaxon huffs and drops back down on the bed. “And what if the police don’t accept our explanation? We could be arrested.”

I move back to my seat and pull out my phone.

Me: Hey, so the doctor said he has to contact the police about the gunshot wound. What should we do?

Daniel: Shit. I didn’t think about that. Legally, they will have to collect evidence and will want to search the scene of the incident. That means we will have to let them in and allow them to search the area. But the search is limited to the area of the shooting, and no extensive searching is allowed. I’ll let Buck know. We’ll get everything ready here, don’t worry.

Great. Just great.

“What’s wrong?” Jaxon asks.

He must sense my anxiety.

“Daniel says the police will want to investigate the scene of the incident, so he is going to talk to Buck and get everything ready for them to arrive,” I explain.

“How much trouble is this incident going to get the club into?” Roman asks.

“There is nothing illegal at the compound, and we follow all gun safety laws. Since we have kids that live at the compound, everyone takes safety very seriously. It should be fine.” I say.

“Why do you still feel so worried?” Jaxon asks.

I hate that he can sense that.

“If these cops happen to be friendly with the Ragging Machines, then I don’t know if they will do things by the book. Daniel will be there though, so he will make sure they don’t get access to anything more than is needed to close up the investigation. He says as long as it looks like a simple accidental discharge, then everything should be cleared up quickly.”

He nods, and the door to the room opens. A nurse walks in a smiles at us.

“Hi! I’m here to take Mr. Han for his X-ray.” She says.

“That’s me,” Jaxon says, raising his hand.

She smiles and pulls a wheelchair in. “Have a seat, and I will escort you there.”

I stand and help him into the wheelchair. Before I step all the way back, he grabs my hand, brings it to his mouth, and kisses it. He lets go, and the nurse assures us they will be back shortly and wheels him out of the room. Worry starts to bubble up in my stomach as they leave, but I sit back down and try to relax. I don’t like the idea of him being away from me right now.

Maybe it’s the newly formed bond or the threat of the police coming, but being apart from him is putting me on edge. I don’t like it.
