Chapter 97
Duncan
I had never seen Anna look at me with so much hate and confusion before.
Okay, that might not have been true but it had been a long time since she stared at me like some type of vermin.
"Anna..."
"I need space, I need space to process this...Please leave," she said, staring at me with fear.
An emotion that I had barely seen in her before.
"Okay," I nodded, knowing there was nothing I could do.
"I'll put on some clothes and leave." I said and made my way back to my room.
I put on sweatpants and a T-shirt before leaving the room.
Anna had not left her position.
I lingered at the door for a second, my hand on the knob, looking back at her.
She was still pressed against the wall, her arms wrapped around herself like she was holding herself together.
"Anna..." I tried again But she shook her head sharply, squeezing her eyes shut like she couldn't even bear to look at me.
The silent rejection hit harder than any bullet ever could.
I stepped out, letting the door click softly behind me.
For a long moment, I just stood in the hallway, staring at the floor, clenching my fists.
Everything was unraveling faster than I could piece it back together
Whoever those bastards were, I was going to kill them, skin every single one of them alive for this.
Once my men found them, I was going to burn them down before leaving Italy.
I made my way to Lucas and Sabrina's room.
"Hey, boss. You're back," Lucas said, rising from the couch.
"Yeah."
"Why the long face, Duncan?" Sabrina walked up to me, her hand trailing down my shoulders.
I slapped her hands off.
I had no idea how Sabrina had sneaked onto the plane with Lucas. I didn't want her here.
"I told her. She knows now,"
"Knows what, boss?" Lucas frowned.
"She knows what we are," I clarified.
Lucas' face instantly paled.
"You told her?" Sabrina demanded in disbelief.
"Yes," I glanced at her. "I did. I didn't have much of a choice,"
"Boss, she's a human..."
"Oh, really? I didn't notice,"
I snapped.
"Look, she saw me get shot and started to ask questions when I showed up very much alive. I had to tell her,"
"You couldn't lie?" he asked.
"And what would I have told of my injuries suddenly disappearing?"
I demanded.
They both looked at each other.
Lucas sighed. He looked visibly distressed which was completely out of character t for Lucas. He was never distressed. Or at least, he never let it show that he was.
"How did she take it?" Lucas was the one to ask. He looked uneasy and who could blame him? Humans were not known for keeping secrets.
"The same way most humans do. She can't even look at me,"
I swallowed. The pain of rejection still stung more that I ever thought it would.
"Told you you should have gotten rid of her when you had the chance."
Sabrina quipped.
I slowly turned towards her, my eyes blazing with anger.
"I'll advise you to refrain from saying anything stupid again, Sabrina. If you can shut up all together, do it."
Sabrina glared but she didn't dare utter another word.
Smart of her. With my current mood, I was ready to tear anyone apart.
"Okay, boss but this is serious. What if she tells someone?"
"She won't," I said, lowering myself on the couch. "She barely believes it herself."
"Let's hope so." Lucas said with a sigh.
"Yes, let's."
I murmured, my mind wandering back to Anna. The look on her eyes haunting me.
"What's the update on these bastards?" I asked an hour later.
"They are on the move,"
"What does that mean?" I questioned.
"It means they've been driving since we began to track them. But we're on their tail. They'll be intercepted in a more private place,"
"Good. Make sure they don't lose them. Whoever they are. They knew me and knew shooting me wasn't going to kill me,"
"Werewolves,"
"Indeed,"
I stroked my chin. The faster we captured them, the better. I'd have to ask Anna some questions when she eventually calms down, If she ever would.
I sighed. I just had to go and fall in love with a human.
Me, Duncan. The last time a human found out my identity, he was dead before sunrise.
"Where are you going?" Sabrina asked as I rose from the couch. I was restless and I needed to move, run in the wind.
I'd have preferred my wolf form but I knew that was a bad idea. I was erratic. If I turned, my emotions may consume me and I might go mad.
"Out," I muttered.
"Out where?" Sabrina asked. She looked worried for me. Just like she had when she and Lucas first landed.
"I'm going to take a stroll," I said and made my way to the door. I yanked it open and disappeared into the hallway with my phone on hand.
Anna's abduction had done a number on me. I had tried to follow her sent after I had healed but I had followed to a point and it suddenly disappeared. That was when I had realized she'd been taking my werewolves or witches...werewolves that knew who I was.
When I had gotten the call, I wasn't sure what I was expecting but them asking for a ransom has been shocking.
If all they wanted was Money, why would they shoot me fatally, they must have known I would heal fast.
I was thinking too much again. The only person that could help was Anna and I doubted she wanted to speak to me anytime from now
As I stepped outside into the night, the cool breeze hit my skin, sending shivers down my spine.
I started to run but then stopped realizing I didn't have the strength to. I didn't want to run. I wanted to be in Anna's arms. I wanted her to tell me she still wanted me. I wanted her to hug me like she did in the field when she'd not realized who I was.
I had walked at least ten miles before I realized how far I was. As I headed back, my phone rang. I picked up the phone without looking at the ID.
There was a short stretch of silence before someone finally spoke.
"Your men are dead. Putting a tracking device was a mistake," the voice said and suddenly hung up.
My eyes bored a hole into my phone and I growled.
"Boss, you're back," Lucas said.
"Yes, and the men are dead," I growled.
"What?"
"Quick find them,"
