Chapter 143
Duncan
"How the fuck did we not see this?" I barked, pacing outside the basement room.
"fuck!" I hissed under my breath.
The bastard was untraceable. We'd been at it ever since I shot Zoey but nothing. Radio silence. I had completely forgotten about him
And now more than ever I was sure of my theory that there was a mole."There's a mole. There has to be." I faced Levi.
"Indeed there is." he replied with a grim body.
I let out a sigh. If there was a mole in here...I would not be able to forgive whoever it was. Not by a long shot.
"Gather everyone in the mansion including the security guards, we are interrogating everyone today. Get lily from the facility. She can help us with the questioning "
"You think it's one of us?" Levi asked in disbelief.
"Well who else could it be?"
"I don't know. Maybe the human girl!" Levi snapped, his voice rising.
"You might want to watch your tone, Levi." I warned.
He stared at me for a long moment before nodding stiffly.
"Fine. I'll get everyone to gather outside." he said before walking out with a rigidly stiff spine.
There were over 70 men and 20 women living in the mansion. Most of them were lived in the Annex of the mansion and I trusted every single one of them.
Of course the mansion was huge with different Annexes that were quite far away from the main building. I could not think of a single man or worker that could betray me but then again the cook girl had.
I made my way back to Anna. She was awake now staring at the ceiling, looking disoriented.
"Your awake," I said softly, my show clicking against the floorboard as I made my way to her.
She glanced at me a small smile appeared in her lips.
"Yes, I tried to stand to come find you but it hurt all over."
"You shouldn't try to stand. I told you. No movements until the doctor says otherwise,"
"I know, I just hate lying around. It makes me feel useless. What about the accounts? Are they balanced?"
"Shhhh. No talk about work. I'm hiring a new accountant and she's going to be in charge of you work until you receive...fully." I punctuated.
"No!" She snapped.
"No?"
"Yes. You're giving my job away."
"Anna... don't argue," i said.
"Okay. You look sad,"
That was because I was, I felt sad. Too many things were going wrong in my life and I needed a solution to fix all of it, fast..
"No, I'm just tired. Haven't slept in days," I lied. I didn't want to bother her.
"Is it because I took over your bed?" She asked.
I chuckled. "No, no. Not that. I'm trying to solve some issues within the House,"
"Tell me what it is," she demanded and I smiled.
"You need to worry about getting better."
"Duncan, I'm injured not Brian dead. I can take whatever news you give me."
"I know you can. You know I never thankdd you for saving our lives."
"More like you saved my life," she smiled..
"No, you did. Without your help. We would have lost more men that we needed to."
"If you insist,"
"How did you know those bullets would work?"
I asked. I wasn't sure what I was trying to get out of her... answers Maybe. Something to put me at ease and ignore Levi's warning. I wasn't sure.
She was quiet for a best before she opened her mouth to speak,
"I didn't. I figured of you had that much on the basement then it could have some devastating effects. I just wanted to protect you, that's all."
A sigh of relief escaped my lips.
"You're a smart woman," he squeezed her hand.
"I have to be. I spent my entire life fending for myself,"
She was such a mysterious woman. Everything about her. I loved it and yet wanted to peel her layer by layer. To know her but she was always guarded.
I trusted her yet I felt shut out. That was not the effect most women had on me.
Inwqs usually the closed off one.
"You'll tell me these stories once you're feeling better. All of them.,"
"Only if you tell me yours," she said. She was so aggressive even when it wasn't required. It was one of the things I was in love with about her.
It didn't take long, she fell asleep again but I didn't leave her side, I watched her sleep for hours until Levi came in to tell me that everyone was waiting for me to address to them outside.
"I'll be out in a moment," I sighed.
Levi left, closing the door behind him. I stood up and kissed Anna on the forehead as she slept peacefully.
Outside the mansion, all my men and staff stood outside, murmuring as they waited for my arrival.
As soon as I was in their view, they quieted down and faced me in expectation.
The murmuring died down the moment I stepped out.
Every gaze shifted to me, some curious, some confused, but most of them alert. They could sense something was wrong. I could feel it in the air.
Levi stood off to the side, arms crossed, eyes sweeping the crowd
I cleared my throat. "I won't waste your time," i began, my voice for. "There's been a breach. Someone among us is feeding information to the enemy."
Gasps rippled through the crowd. A few heads turned instinctively towards their neighbors.
"I didn't want to believe either but after Zoe, the maid or cook. I wouldn't be surprised. In a minute, we will be doing a thorough sweep of each and everyone's room in the mansion. You better pray to the goddess that I don't catch any of you with compromising materials,"
The entire place fell quiet. A pin could have dropped and everyone would have heard it.
"Levi, get everything set. We begin in twenty minutes,"
Yes, Duncan,
