Chapter Eighty

Chapter Eighty
Kacy
It's rare to see Bryan not using force to get what he wanted. Francis was right: he had changed. The Bryan I used to know was somewhat cruel, not caring about how others would feel as long as he got what he wanted. But now he's different. He didn't hurt the spy and listened to him instead.
The boring time came. We can't really go outside like ordinary citizens since someone might pop up and plant a bullet in our heads. Francis didn't seem to be bored at all, even though all he does is sit at his desk, doing office work and nothing.
"We're sorry for causing you trouble, Francis," I said, lounging on the sofa. "I hope this will be over soon so that we can go back to our normal lives."
"I'm afraid it'll take us some time to figure out what to do. We can't ask for the police's help either, since we have violated lots of rules. They might put us in jail instead if they find out who we are," Francis said, his legs on his desk beside a cup of coffee.
"I think I should go buy us something to eat." Bryan stood up and was about to leave.
"You don't have to do that, boss," Francis said. "I've ordered food online. You don't have to go outside."
"You already did?" Bryan asked.
"Yup. I bought your favorite foie gras and king crabs freshly picked from the sea," Francis said, a little bit sarcastic.
"Oh, thank you so much, man," Bryan smiled. It's been a while since the last time I saw him smile. He's always serious. Sometimes I wonder how he could be so hard on himself, as if he doesn't have feelings or emotions. He looked at me and winked.
My face flushed, feeling a little bit embarrassed for watching him in awe with my mouth open. I couldn't help but fall even more in love. He's not growing old at all, just wise and handsome. The older he gets, the hotter he becomes.
Francis coughed to get our attention. "You're welcome, guys. You're my only friends left, so we have to be there for each other. You don't have to worry about certain things; I got your back."
"Thank you so much, Francis. You're such a reliable friend," I said.
"That's what friends are for," he replied. A few moments later, the doorbell rang. "It must be the food delivery. I'll go check it out."
"Let me do it," Bryan said. "It's the least I can do. Just sit back and relax."
"Okay." Francis sat on the couch like a kitten.
Bryan went to the door and opened it. He had a little chat with the delivery boy before bringing in the food Francis had ordered. He put them down on the glass table in the center of the couches.
"Let's dig in," Francis said, sitting straight.
Bryan sat down beside me. We opened the food packages. Looking at the delicious foods, I couldn't help salivating. It's been a while since the last time I've tasted such good food. It was when my parents were still alive. It brings back a lot of memories, and thinking about them makes me feel sad.
"You okay?" Bryan asked, his soft gaze showing how much he cared.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine." Though tears were about to fall from my eyes, I held them back. I can't afford to be emotional right now.
"It's okay if you want to cry," Bryan said.
It's the first time I heard him say those words, and it even worsened my feelings. Before I could notice, tears were already falling down my eyes like little raindrops. "I'm sorry."
"You don't have to apologize for how you feel." Bryan used his thumb to wipe the tears from my face. Then he hugged me so tight. "I should be the one to apologize for everything, for the pain and troubles I've brought you."
Francis faked a cough. Bryan and I got so lost in our own worlds that we forgot he's there sitting right in front of us. "So sweet," he said, eating his food.
Bryan removed his arms from me. His cheeks flushed. He coughed slightly before eating his food. Okay. I know we're not high schoolers anymore, but I still felt like one every time I was around him. Maybe what I felt for him was puppy love or a crush.
There's an awkward silence between the three of us as we eat. Sometimes glancing at each other. If this is the last meal I can have with them, I'd rather enjoy it. After lunch, I accompanied Bryan to check on the spy.
Bryan slightly slapped the man's face to wake him up. "Wake up, wake up," he said.
The man opened his eyes slowly. It's not even twenty-four hours yet since he was locked here, but he looked weak already. His lips look dry and his eyes deep.
"Wa... Water, please..." he muttered.
"You should be grateful that we didn't kill you yet," Bryan said, helping him drink.
He looked into Bryan's eyes and then at me. "Are you going to force me to speak?" he asked.
"If we have to," I said.
The man didn't say anything for a while. Then he said, "I'll tell you everything."
"You made the right choice," Bryan replied.
I don't really know what happened or what Bryan did to convince this man to speak. I thought all spies were tough and needed to be tortured first to squeeze out information from them. I saw it in movies and read it in Mafia novels before—most of them wouldn't even speak until their last breath, but this man is different, or maybe Bryan just knows his thing.
"I work for Don Palermo," he said in a serious tone of voice. "He's a ruthless Mafia boss; he never shows mercy to anyone who gets in his way."
"I didn't expect it to be related to my past life. If he's my father's enemy, then he's wrong for targeting me, especially Kacy. She's nothing to do with this, and we're just trying to live a normal life. My father died a long time ago," Bryan said.
