Chapter 85: Epilogue
The fallout would take years to process. Government officials were dismissed in a broad house cleaning. James Linklieter was convicted of bribery, and the Lucky Dog casino closed down for good. Police procedures for assigning cases were revised.
Lurid stories were published about the organization. The idea of a group employing certain individuals, and then targeting those same persons for robbery, was fascinating to the public. The fact that this group still existed, minus their front men Vandenburg and Rempert, stirred conspiracy theorists. Who knew what the organization would do going forward?
The task force held their own postmortem.
“Why do you think Trenchard flipped?”
Detective Jones thought for a moment.
“He was out of options. Once a professional B&E man is exposed, they are done. Sam could either move away and try robbery somewhere else or stay here and give interviews to the press for the next five years. Sort of like Henry Hill. A reformed thief who explains to the public how things are done.”
“Do you think the organization will retaliate?”
“No. They need to fade back into the shadows for a while.”
“Too bad we couldn’t take them down.”
“We’ve damaged them. Their bribery list has been wiped out.”
“What’s next?”
“On to the next assignment. It’s been a pleasure working with you, gentleman.”
