15 mins later we had been dropped off at the house and left to our own demise for the next 24 hours and to do what we wanted. We had been given money to have food delivered and a fully stocked liquor cabinet. My father of course told us to stay out of his private reserved liquor which I had already known better. I had always been told at a young age that it was off limits and was only for special occasions and business deals. I knew not to mess with my father when it came to work and his liquor as he was a very loving man, but when he gave you an order which wasn’t often, he meant every word. “Ok let’s do this… I want to order pasta, and whatever else you all want…. then I want to get into my swimsuit and hang out in the back yard and just chill!” I said as I picked up the phone and grabbed the menu from the drawer.
Jose and Nicholas had given one another a look while Catherine grabbed drinks from the fridge. “Ya sure whatever I’m going to change into my shorts why don’t you girls order what ya’ll want. You two know what we like, and we can eat whatever so just order whatever…” Nicholas said as he and Jose run towards the guest room down the hall chasing one another. Catherine was watching me from her location by the island as she sipped on some water even though she had pulled out wine, beer, vodka, tequila, and gin from the cabinet and the wine fridge below. After a few more minutes of looking at the menu and trying to figure out what Catherine could be trying to tell me without using words. Or trying to tell me since I knew that she had to tell me something with how weird she had been all day. “Hey Cat…. What’s going on? Call me crazy, but you’ve been, weird all day. I don’t know if it’s because we are about to really be going out on our own for the first time. Or because this is a scary new thing and you’re scared because it’s all so new and don’t want things to change, but to be honest if you want to know the truth, I’m terrified but in a good way. I can’t wait to get out and find out what the world has to offer me and even though I’ve been all over the world. I get to truly see what its’ got for me and how far I, me, Mia will go without my parents and their bitching at every turn. I’ll however miss you unless we end up at the same place than yay, but it’s still a lot of what ifs at this point and I just don’t want you to be upset if we don’t end up at that same place!” I said as I stood on the other side of the island away from her.
Catherine had got a little teary eyed on me and had looked like she was about to have a complete breakdown. That was until she took out the tequila and 4 shot glasses. “Hey guys….come on lets’ get these shots going!” she yelled out. Nicholas and Jose came running down the hall with Jose heading right to the islands fruit basket for limes knowing exactly where to find everything.
Before I knew it, shots were lining up one after another “Ok, ok now lets’ do Never have I ever…. Really loosen us up!” Nicholas said as he looked to Catherine who lifted a glass. “Never have I ever been so scared to tell someone how I feel about them” she said and downed her shot and slammed it down again. Nicholas and Jose looked at me and rolled their eyes like I’m supposed to know what the hell she’s talking about. Ya being her best friend I should know since we know everything about each other. I was getting ready to ask her when the door-bell rang telling us the food had arrived as we were starving.
I was ready to eat something before I drank anything else. “I’ll get it….” I said as I needed some time to figure out what the hell my friends were basically trying to tell me. After sitting all the food down on the island Catherine, Jose, and Nicholas had all been quite and standing in the corner near the back door and whispering. Which we just never did as we were always so open with one another. “OK….ENOUGH IS ENOUGH…WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON? CAN WE PLEASE EAT AND THAN TALK BECAUSE I HATE THAT I FEEL LIKE I’M LIVING IN SOME TYPE OF ALTERNATE UNIVERSE WHERE MY FRIENDS ARE NOW ALIENS OR HAVE BEEN TAKEN OVER BY ALIENS!” I yelled at them as I slammed my hands down on the countertop.
Jose and Nicholas along with Catherine finally coming back into the kitchen looking at me like I had lost my mind. “Mia, Catherine you two really should talk and the two of us will see the two of you in the back once you two have done that!” Jose said grabbing the food and Nicholas grabbing some of the drinks off the counter. Catherine scowled at them “Traders…..” she said with a growl. I took a deep breath hoping now my best friend would tell me what the hell was on her mind and would stop giving me the cold shoulder. “Cat please lets’ just get this over with so we can go back to being us. Not so weird like it has been the last 8 hours!” I begged rapping my fingers on the countertop.
Catherine downed another two shots before stepping closer to me and running her fingers across the top of my hand. “See the thing is…. we are both sing-le now, and I guess this is my last real chance to even tell you. Since we have no idea where we’ll be for college. So here goes nothing Mia, I’ve been in love with you for as long as I can remember. Though you have been too busy with Max and school not to mention the things with your parents. I just want you to know before it’s too late again and I know you’ve only been to like 1st base with a girl. However, I’d love to take you to that next step or whatever step you’ll let me take you to!” she said looking down at our hands that are now intwined together.
As Catherine talked, I was busy trying to keep my heart rate down even though my head was spinning and even though I find my best friend attractive. I was just not sure I could do what she was suggesting. “Cat, you I love you and how beautiful I find you….. damn it but you are my best friend, and I am just not sure us messing around is the right thing. You know I am not good in relationships and GAWD I’d hate to hurt you in the end. You know I suck at these things as you and everyone have pointed out that I am un-emotional in relationships. Unreachable when it comes to the heart of things like that” I reminded her as I ran my hands through her gorgeous hair. Catherine finally looked up at me with tears in her eyes but finally a smile. “Hmm well I never asked for a relationship just some fun… so how about we see how tonight turns out and then you get back to me by morning and how it turned out?” she suggested taking the tequila and heading out to where the guys were who are busting up laughing at only gods knew what.
I took a few extra minutes to figure my own shit out while my friends outside were hanging out laughing and joking around while I was having a small panic attack inside. “Mia, you got this and who cares if she’s in love with you it’s just her feelings and you can’t help how she feels. Yet was there something you could have done to keep it from happening? Who knows but also not your problem either” I thought to myself. After another few minutes to myself I finally joined my friends in the backyard and for some dinner and more shots. “About damn time girl, what took so long?” Jose asked as he poured us all a round of his famous punch he had made. I smiled “Nothing I just needed to make sure I had all my things packed for morning and all my essential things if you get my drift. Now let us get this party started, shall we? I want to really enjoy our night and make new memories!” I said as I take my cup from Jose and lift it high in the air.
They all follow suite, and we were on a whole new path as we enjoyed the rest of our night. Leading hopefully to the way I wanted to be so that when morning came, we were all happy and most of all still happy and friends. “I just hope we can get wasted out of our minds and for the two of us to fuck like rabbits until the morning… and the two of you to well do whatever floats your boat!” Nicholas said winking at the two of us. Catherine laughed spitting out her drink while I slapped his arm. “NICK… Jesus don’t the two of you fuck like rabbits most days…. As for the two of us we are good and will do what we always do on nights like this or who knows…” I said leaving it open since who knew what the night would bring.
