I was paralyzed, speechless, suddenly feeling like I couldn't breathe. My heart started beating faster than usual. Now I think about everything I've been through in the short time I've been living here. I never thought that coming here I would find Kayler. Well, at first, I didn't like him, I admit it, but for some strange reason, that hatred faded away and something else grew... Something I can't explain, but now the idea of being without him terrifies me. Now I just want to have him close to me, I miss him when he's not around. It's like an anxiety for something. It's like my drug.
Now that he's in front of me, under the moonlight, asking me to be his girlfriend, it's, without a doubt, incredible. Who would have thought that someone like Kayler would say such sweet words? It doesn't seem strange to me, but tender. Very tender. But what if he's playing with me? What if I end up with a broken heart? I don't want to suffer, although I think I'm already too deep if I want to get out. Besides, Kayler seems... sincere. Right now, he looks impatient. I can see his dilated pupils as he watches me.
"Kayler, this is...," I began to say, "I never thought you..."
"Just say yes," he interrupted.
Is this Kayler? The tough, jealous, and serious guy? I don't recognize him, really. But I don't want to say no. I want to be his girlfriend.
"Yes, Kayler," I smiled, "I do want to be your..." I didn't finish the sentence because he quickly pressed his lips to mine. I blinked a few times but then closed my eyes to return the kiss.
It was a soft, slow kiss, just him and me, no rush, savoring the moment. Living the moment.
We remained with our foreheads touching.
"I knew you'd say yes," he whispered.
And there's the real Kayler.
"Couldn't resist your charm?" I questioned.
He laughed.
"No. Although I admit that at some point the possibility of you saying no crossed my mind," we pulled apart.
"I thought about it, you know?" I lied. Because all I did was think in my mind, "yes, I want to."
He pretended to be offended.
He lifted his gaze to the moon. I did the same. Now we are a couple. Is it real? Am I now Kayler's girlfriend? I'm his girlfriend! We're a couple! Yes! Okay, too much excitement for today.
Wait, in all this happiness I completely forgot that a few minutes ago I was facing one of those huge wolves. Well, not just any wolf, it's my guardian. All of this still seems very strange to me. I wish I had all the answers I want, but the person who can give them to me is right beside me and with him, it's impossible. Think, Caro, think. It could also be Kayler's friend, whose name I forgot. Yes, maybe he can help me. I have to do all of this without Kayler finding out.
He thinks I'm going to let this go just like that. No, when something gets into my head, it's impossible to get it out.
"What are you thinking about so much?" he asked.
I looked at him.
"About... things," I replied, smiling. "Hey, will you come to my house tonight like you did yesterday?"
When he slept with me.
He narrowed his eyes.
"Maybe," he murmured. "Why?"
To lock the window.
"For nothing."
He might be my boyfriend, but I'm still the same. My mom could find us like that, and who knows what might happen. I prefer to keep the waters calm. Although I admit that sleeping with Kayler feels good, and more so in this cold, he keeps me warm. I don't know, but he's always warm.
Kayler stood up and offered me his hand to do the same.
"I have to go," he scratched his neck. "My dad and I have... a job."
A job? At night?
"Alright," I nodded.
He approached and caressed my cheek with his right hand, while the other he placed on my waist, pulling me closer to him.
"I'll pick you up tomorrow so we can go to school together. Like always."
He leaned in and kissed me. He kisses so well. His lips are so soft. They fit perfectly with mine. If I could, I would spend my whole life kissing him.
How corny I've become.
We separated and started walking to his car... Wait, where's his car?
"Didn't you bring the car?" I asked, looking at him with suspicion.
"Uh, no, I walked through the forest," he replied.
I frowned.
If he walked through the forest, why didn't he encounter the wolf that visited me minutes earlier? Is it his pet or what? Do wolves only come to me?
So many questions.
"Oh, I see," I said. "Didn't you see anything... while you were walking through the forest?" I wanted to know. Casually.
His expression turned serious.
"No," he snapped. "Carolina, I've already told you that there's no need to be afraid of the forest. It's not bad."
Where have I heard that before?
"It's not about the forest, but what's in it."
And where have I said that before, too?
He looked at me. A threatening look. It was even scary. It's better not to ask.
"I have to go. See you tomorrow," he turned and started walking towards the forest.
Did he get angry?
I couldn't help feeling a little sad. Great, I always mess up. I turned and started walking to the front door of my house, but suddenly something grabbed my elbow, and I bumped into a very flat abdomen.
Kayler.
"Did you think I would leave just like that?" he questioned.
I frowned.
He leaned in and kissed me again. Yes, we kissed for about six seconds, and then we parted.
"Now I really have to go," he murmured. "And please, stop thinking about things that confuse you more and more. Just leave things as they are." That sounded more like an order.
"Alright," I said finally.
I always end up agreeing.
Now he left, disappearing into the mysterious forest. There's fog, a lot, that's why I can't see him anymore. I just hope nothing happens to him, although he can take care of himself. I was about to turn to enter the house, but suddenly I heard a howl. That put me on alert. What if that wolf appeared to Kayler? No, I don't think so.
Should I go check?
No. He said to leave things as they were. I know, I'll call him. I grabbed my phone and dialed his number. One, two, three rings, and he didn't answer. I tried again, and this time he did.
"Hello?" someone answered. But it's not Kayler. It's a woman's voice.
"Is Kayler there?" I asked, feeling a lump in my throat.
"Who are you? Another fling of Kayler's?" she laughed.
"Fling?" I wanted to know.
I heard her sigh.
"Yes, first it was Brisa, Camila, Estefanía, Bárbara, Paige, and now you, who I think I know who you are," she mocked. "His new neighbor."
Okay, at this moment, I feel like a fool.
"Don't waste your time, girl," she continued when I didn't respond. "Oh, and if you want a piece of advice: it's better to stay away from him. You might not end up well. You don't want to end up like Scott." With that, she hung up.
I slowly removed the phone from my ear, feeling tears gathering in my eyes. What was all that? Is Kayler cheating on me? Who was this girl who answered his phone? Damn it, I hate being mocked. I gripped the phone tightly and screamed as loud as I could, storming into the house and slamming the door shut.
This can't be happening.
I have to find out what's going on here. I have to do it tomorrow. Kayler can't be playing with me, he can't be messing with me.
My phone rang, announcing a message.
I opened it:
From: Private.
I know you became Kayler's girlfriend. It might seem strange to you, right? But since you ignored the warnings, we'll have to take action against you. I just advise you to take care. And yes, it's a threat.
See you. ;)
