Chapter 13: ~ Samantha contd

He smiled and signaled for Mary to come over. “Hello Mary, mind putting this on my room and add a couple of hundreds for ye and Todd. Ye both do a really good job.”

“Thank you, sir. You two have a great night.” She gave him a big smile.

We walked out the bar and I waived to Mary. Instead of walking towards the elevator we took the door to the right down the stairs.

“If I’m not mistaken yer room is three levels down. It will be a waste of time and energy to call the lift just for three flights.”

As we walked down the flight of stairs we held hands.

“I like ye Samantha…very much.”

“Well thank you. I like you too.”

He stopped midway down a flight. “Funny I think it is the first time I ever said that to anyone.”

“Please you’ve never said I love you to anyone?”

“Oh I’ve said I loved them, but never that I liked them. Ye’re the first.”

We continued walking in silence. In front of my door I turned to look at him. I saw him clearly and it dawned on me, this man had brains, wealth, sophistication, and beauty. I deeply looked into his eyes before saying, “As much as I want you to come inside…I think it would be best if we both say goodnight.”

Once inside I walked through the bedroom towards the bathroom removing my lab coat and my scrubs, then the hair band that held my bun together. Before heading into the shower I removed my underwear. I stepped in and turn the shower on. Letting the water run over my body I closed my eyes. I always thought that if I really concentrated I could feel each single drop touch my skin and stand still a few seconds before rolling off. As if each trouble of the day would slowly roll off me.

The bathroom was filled with steam and I kept my eyes shut. I tried to concentrate, but it was not working. Before long I saw behind my eyes a pair bright blue eyes looking back at me. I knew them anywhere. “David,” I whispered. I saw him laughing, running, being a happy 5-year-old. His smile. It was his daddy’s smile. I smiled and before I could control it I saw vacant lifeless blue eyes looking back at me. My eyes began to burn and I could no longer tell the difference between the hot water and my tears. I shook my head several times to get David’s last day’s image out of my mind. It was useless. Too late. I broke and fell to the shower floor and wrapped my arms around my legs. The shower continued to pour over me and I didn’t care if I drowned. My babies were dead.

I don’t know how long I was there, but it felt like hours and I had no more tears to shed. Completely rinsed I walked out of the shower and quickly dried my body. I wrapped the bathrobe around me, feeling so overwhelmed my eyes began to burn and tears began to flow yet again. I thought they were all gone, I guess I was wrong.

My phone beeped on the nightstand with Lachlan’s card sitting right next to it. As I picked it up it rang, for a moment I thought it would be my ex, but I was a number I did not know so I picked it up. « Hello? » For the next couple of minutes Lachlan and I talked and by the end of our conversation was feeling just a little better. Not soon after I turned off the lights I fell asleep.

When I woke up the next morning I found a text message from Lachlan.

Lachlan; Samantha, I hope ye slept well. Need anything call me. I will be in meetings until at least three so I might nae answer, but leave me a message and I promise that will call ye back. Lachlan.

I smiled. Even though I had wished to wake up in his arms I liked the idea that he cared enough to send me a message. I took him up on his proposition and send him a message of my own.

Me; Lachlan, I did sleep extraordinarily well and thanks to you. Have a great day. Samantha

I took a shower and rammed my drawers picked out a pair of white boxers and t-shirt. I put them on and picked up my laptop. I know not the sexiest of outfits but hell they were comfortable.

Sitting in the big sofa before the TV I checked my emails and messages. Besides the usual nothing needed my urgent notice. I did find a message from my mother. Instead of writing back I called her.

“Hey honey. How are you doing?” She asked and through the receiver I could feel her smile.

“Hi mom. I’m Ok I guess, except that, like every year, William has been calling all the time. I even found him waiting for me at my hotel last night.”

“Oh sweetie, I’m sorry.”

“It will be ok. You wanted to talk about something in particular?” I put my feet under me as I settled deeper into my couch.

“Yes, it’s about your Uncle Patty. It seems he’s has a heart condition and I was wondering if you can check on his file.”

Sitting up I changed my phone to the other side. “I’m not a loud to operate on family it’s considered unethical, but I can have a look and recommend you a colleague.”

“Would you really? Oh thank you baby.” I could hear the relief in her voice.

“Send Uncle Patty’s file over and I’ll have a look at it as quickly as possible and call you back with a name and number.”

“Ok baby. Oh and Sammy are you coming over next week?”

“I don’t know mom. I’ll let you know in a couple of days. Maybe we can do something different this year. We’ll talk over it later on this week.” With my parents and close family, I never had any difficulty discussing the loss of David and my miscarriage.

“Whatever you want sweetie.” She said ever so understanding.

“Bye mom. Big kiss to you and Dad.”

“Bye Sammy.”

Not long after my conversation with my mother I received her email. I searched for the printer pass word and was able to print the whole file. I set myself on the same desk and began to read the file. It was in the middle of reading my uncle’s medical history there was a knock at my door. I got up and opened to find a waiter pushing in a trolley filled with food. I Arched an inquisitive eyebrow and the waiter began to set the plates on the grand table.

« Mr. Douglass hopes you have a wonderful lunch. And please if there’s anything else please call us. »

I left the file all scattered on the table and I walked and sat in front of the place set for me. Even though I’m not the kind of person that likes for a man to choose for me what I eat I can honestly say that he chose well. Before me upon the table was a plate of seafood linguine. It smelled delicious. I waited for him to pour out the wine and left.

My phone rang, I looked at the caller Id and picked it up, “This is Dr. Thornsdale.” The nurse on the other side informed me that Bobby’s fever had finally gone down. “Well that is great news, Thank you Angela. Please keep me informed if there are any changes.”

I continued to eat with a smile on my lips. Maybe now the poor kind will have a chance to live. After eating I set the plates back on the trolley and pushed it out into the hall way. Once back in I called for it to be picked up.

I looked at my watch and it was almost time for my kickboxing workout and no way in hell was I going to miss it. I needed to let out some steam.
