Chapter 135: The Romano Empire
The Romano family siblings gathered around the spacious dining table to share a special breakfast, showcasing their strong familial bond. The room was filled with a comforting heat as sunshine poured in through the high windows.
"Did you observe the look on Bennett's face yesterday night?"
Alexander Romano chuckled, slicing into his eggs. "Priceless."
Veronica Romano, sitting to his right, smirked. "He must be fuming. Five years, and we finally got that contract."
Lucas Romano, the third-born, glanced up from his phone. "Dad was celebrating pretty hard. Did anyone see how much he drank?"
Sophia Romano, the youngest, giggled. "I think he finished more than one bottle of that expensive wine."
Alexander's eyes twinkled. "He deserved it. Bennett Conglomerate didn't stand a chance against us."
Veronica leaned forward, her eyes sharp. "We need to capitalize on this victory. The market's going to be watching our every move."
Lucas nodded, tapping away on his phone. "I've been working on some new tech initiatives. They could give us a significant edge."
Sophia smiled. "Maybe we should organize a celebratory event? Show the world we're not just the best, but we also know how to have fun."
Alexander raised an eyebrow. "A party? Not a bad idea, Sophia. It would be a great PR move."
Veronica sipped her coffee, looking at Alexander. "So, Mr. Cold and Calculating, what's your next big plan for the company?"
Alexander smirked. "I was thinking of expanding our logistics network. With the new contract, we'll need faster and more efficient distribution."
Lucas rolled his eyes. "You and your logistics. How about investing in some cutting-edge tech for a change?"
Veronica laughed. "Not everyone is a tech genius like you, Lucas."
Sophia chimed in, grinning. "Yeah, some of us have to work for a living."
Lucas shook his head, smiling. "I do work. Just not in the traditional sense."
Alexander pointed his fork at Lucas. "We appreciate your contributions, little brother. Even if you do hide in your tech cave most of the time."
Veronica added, "And Sophia, your ideas about PR and marketing are spot on. We need to stay visible."
Sophia beamed. "Thanks, Veronica. I just want to make sure we stay ahead of the curve."
A maid entered the dining room, her face pale. "Excuse me, but Mr. Charles isn't waking up."
The fork belonging to Alexander made a loud noise as it fell onto his plate. "What do you mean he's not waking up?"
The maid's voice shook with fear. He is not replying. I have attempted all possible solutions.
Veronica suddenly rose to her feet. "Display it to us."
The brothers and sisters hurried up the impressive staircase, trailing behind the maid as she led them to their father's room. The slightly open door revealed Charles Romano sitting in his armchair, holding a glass of wine.
Alexander was the first to reach their father. He shook Charles gently. "Dad? Wake up."
Veronica's hand flew to her mouth. "Oh my God..."
Lucas, his face drained of color, checked for a pulse. "He's not breathing."
Sophia, tears streaming down her face, whispered, "Is he...?"
Alexander's voice was hollow. "He's gone."
Veronica knelt beside the chair, her eyes searching for any sign of life. "How? He was fine last night."
Lucas examined the wine glass. "It could be the wine. Did anyone else drink from this?"
Sophia shook her head, sobbing. "No, he was the only one."
Alexander's jaw tightened. "We need to call the police. This isn't natural."
As the ambulance pulled up and took Charles away the siblings could do nothing but pray their father woke up.
*Inside the Ambulance*
"Stay with us, Dad," Alexander urged, gripping Charles' hand tightly.
Veronica's face was pale, her eyes wide with fear. "How could this happen, Alex?"
"I don't know, but we'll figure it out. Just focus on Dad right now," Alexander replied, his voice steady but strained.
Sophia was sobbing uncontrollably, her face buried in Lucas's shoulder. "He can't die, Lucas. He just can't."
Lucas held her close, whispering, "It's going to be okay, Sophia. Dad's a fighter. He'll pull through."
In the Emergency Room Waiting Area
Alexander paced the floor, his expression dark. Veronica sat beside him, her hands clutching each other tightly.
"Who would do this?" Veronica asked, her voice trembling.
Alexander stopped and looked at her. "I have a pretty good idea. Bennett Conglomerate. Jonathan Bennett."
Veronica's eyes widened. "You think Jonathan did this?"
Alexander nodded grimly. "Dad humiliated him last night. He has the most to gain from our downfall."
Veronica shook her head. "But poisoning? That's... extreme."
"He's desperate. We need to be prepared for anything," Alexander said, his jaw clenched.
Elsewhere in the Waiting Area. Lucas and Sophia comforted themselves from what was happening. Sophia's sobs had quieted, but tears still streamed down her face. Lucas sat beside her, trying to offer comfort.
"Sophia, look at me," Lucas said gently.
She lifted her tear-streaked face. "I'm so scared, Lucas."
"I know. But we have to stay strong. For Dad. For each other," Lucas said, his voice calm.
Sophia nodded, wiping her eyes. "Do you think Alex is right? About Bennett?"
Lucas let out a sigh. I have no idea. At the moment, our main focus should be on Dad. We will address the remaining tasks at a later time.
A doctor emerged from the emergency room, appearing serious as the door opened. The brothers and sisters hurried towards him.
"Doctor, can you give me an update on his condition?" Alexander inquired, maintaining a steady voice but revealing his anxiety through his eyes.
The doctor nodded his head. "I apologize." We exhausted all efforts, but unfortunately, Mr. Romano did not survive.
Veronica let out a gasp, causing her knees to buckle. Lucas grabbed her, his tear-filled eyes meeting hers. Sophia emitted a heartbreaking cry and fell into Lucas's embrace.
Alexander remained motionless, his expression showing calmness. "Quietly, he expressed his gratitude to the doctor."
The doctor gazed at him with empathy in his eyes. Mr. Romano, is it possible for us to have a private conversation?
Alexander nodded and followed the doctor to a quiet corner of the room.
In a quiet Corner of the Waiting Area, The doctor turned to Alexander, his expression grave. "Mr. Romano, I need to tell you that your father was poisoned."
Alexander's eyes widened. "Poisoned? Are you sure?"
The doctor nodded. "The symptoms and the tests we ran all point to poisoning. I'm very sorry."
Alexander's mind raced. "Do you know what kind of poison?"
"We're still running tests to determine that. But it was fast-acting, and there was nothing we could do," the doctor explained.
Alexander's fists clenched. "Thank you for telling me. Please keep us updated."
The doctor nodded. "Of course. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss."
Back in the Waiting Area
Alexander rejoined his siblings, who were still in various stages of shock and grief.
"Alex, what did the doctor say?" Veronica asked, her voice breaking.
Alexander took a deep breath. "Dad was poisoned."
Lucas's head snapped up. "Poisoned? By who?"
Alexander's eyes were cold and hard. "I do not doubt that this was Jonathan Bennett's doing."
Sophia's eyes widened in horror. "But why? Just because of the contract?"
Alexander nodded. "It's more than just the contract. It's about power, control, and revenge."
Veronica wiped her tears, her face setting into a determined expression. "What do we do now?"
Alexander's voice was steely. "We find out exactly what happened, and then we make Jonathan Bennett pay. No one harms our family and gets away with it."
Lucas put a hand on Alexander's shoulder. "We'll need to be smart about this, Alex. We can't let our emotions cloud our judgment."
Alexander nodded. "Agreed. But we won't rest until we have justice for Dad."
Sophia, her tears finally slowing, looked at her brothers and sister. "We'll do it together. As a family."
