His polite manner almost gave Beckett the illusion that things were going
his way.
Beckett kept thinking his hardline approach would be enough to secure the partnership with Hawksley Group.
He kept up his act. “If you can’t answer my personal questions, surely you can answer business ones, can’t you? You can’t just do whatever you please. Last night, you told me that Pioneer Prime had the project. Now, barely a day later, there’s suddenly a change? That’s unacceptable.”
The assistant replied, tone still official and detached. “I’m sorry, but decisions come from the top. I don’t make them–I’m just here to notify you.”
That attitude finally made Beckett snap.
He knocked a mug off the coffee table, sending it clattering to the floor. “If you aren’t involved in anything, you have no business sitting here talking to me!”
The assistant blinked, as if doubting he’d heard correctly.
If it hadn’t been for his permission, Beckett would still be waiting outside. the building right now.
“I’m not here for this pointless back–and–forth. My time is valuable. Get Mr. Hawksley down here. Now.”
The assistant had never dealt with someone who took a mile for every inch given. His patience–and his politeness–were nearly gone.
He dropped the polite smile and his expression turned cold. “Mr. Hawksley is unavailable. Even if he weren’t, he wouldn’t waste his time meeting you,”
Beckett instantly picked up on the slight. He, the eldest son of the Vance family, being brushed off by some assistant?

“And who are you to decide for Mr. Hawksley? What gives you the right?”
The assistant shrugged. “I’m Mr. Hawksley’s assistant. That’s my right.”
Beckett waved him off. “Either you put me through to Mr. Hawksley, or I’ll make a scene right here. It was Hawksley Group who pulled this stunt first!”
The assistant knew that letting Beckett speak to Justin would only make Beckett look bad.
He hadn’t planned on letting Beckett embarrass himself, but seeing how Beckett refused to back down, even he couldn’t resist.
“Fine. I’ll call Mr. Hawksley for you. That work?”
Beckett thought his tantrum had finally paid off. He was practically gloating, convinced he’d caught Hawksley Group breaking their word and that Pioneer Prime’s deal was as good as done. He was even fantasizing about getting the contract signed today.
The call went through.
Beckett quickly dialed down his earlier aggression and put on his best cordial tone. “Mr. Hawksley, this is Bennett from Pioneer Prime. I wanted to discuss the project cooperation with you further.”
Justin had been at home, admiring one of Edith’s oil paintings, when his assistant called to say someone from Pioneer Prime was causing a scene at the office and demanding to speak to him.
His good mood evaporated instantly–nothing could have soured it faster. He hadn’t intended to take the call, but remembering what Beckett had pulled the night before, Justin couldn’t resist. If you have nothing better to do, teasing a barking dog can be its own entertainment.
Justin deliberately lowered his voice. “There’s nothing to discuss. We’ve already decided to go with Lucent Star Group. If I’m not mistaken, the contract will be signed this afternoon.”

Beckett froze. Why did that voice sound so familiar?
He racked his brain, but couldn’t recall ever meeting Mr. Hawksley in
person. He’d been to Hawksley Group twice to discuss the partnership,
but both times he’d only met with the project manager.
