Chapter 4: Cock Blocked By Patients

I was dealing with a patient who was proving to be a pain in the ass, but I had to smile and remain calm through the whole thing. The woman thought she was some royal princess who deserved better treatment than the one I was giving her.

“You look like you’re about to murder someone,” my amused boyfriend said as he stood by the door of the staff room.

“Don’t even tempt me,” I mumbled.

“Well, as long as that sour mood is gone by tonight, then I’ll be good,” he smirked, walking in and putting his arms around my waist.

I couldn’t believe that it had been six months already. Time had flown so fast with Alex that it didn’t even really feel like it did fly by. I’m not making any sense, but they say when you’re truly happy, nothing makes sense, or at least when you try and explain your happiness it doesn’t make sense.

After the twins’ birthday party, things just pretty much took off from there. Despite the twins’ warnings, I still decided to pursue my relationship with Alex, and it’s one of the best relationships I’ve ever been in.

On my 27th birthday, which is exactly a month after the twins’ birthday, he whisked me away to the Bahamas for the weekend. Nellie was mad at me for ditching her on our birthday, but apparently Alex got her a gift that made her forget all about why she was mad at me to begin with.

Alex is the kind of boyfriend you bring home to meet your parents, but with me it’s a complicated situation. My biological mother is dead, while my biological father is a touchy subject. He’s met my adoptive family, and they have mixed feelings about him.

But that didn’t stop me.

I haven’t been this happy in a while, even though Nellie insists that she’s seen me happier. I just feel like I have no other problems in life right now, and that everything is going the way I’d want it to go at this point in my life.

“Knowing that I’m seeing you already diminishes the sour mood,” I smiled, turning to face him.

“Good! Because the surprise I have for you will blow your mind,” he said boldly.

“Oh really? We’re feeling confident,” I teased.

“Justifiably so! You’ll understand when we get there,” he replied.

“I can’t wait,” I admitted. He bent and gave me a kiss.

“Me neither,” he smiled.

“Oh cut the PDA! We don’t want to see that,” Fernando complained from the door.

Alex chuckled. “I was just leaving anyway.”

“Sure you were,” Fernando smirked.

“See you tonight beautiful,” Alex said before kissing me one more time. He left me flushed before I could even say anything.

Fernando fanned himself. “That man is too hot for words!”

“And he’s all mine,” I giggled.

“Look at you staking claim,” he said, wiggling his eyebrows.

I flushed. “It’s not even like that.”

“So you haven’t done the deed yet?” he asked in horror.

I looked down. “Nope!”

“Why not?” he asked, sounding genuinely confused. When I looked up, he even looked confused.

I shrugged. “I don’t know! I guess the moment just hasn’t presented itself.”

He frowned. “Honey, the man is already sex on legs. What more do you need to turn you on?”

“I don’t know Fernie,” I groaned.

“Do you at least shiver or something when he touches you?” he asked.

“Is that even a thing?” I questioned.

“Oh god! You have the hottest boyfriend ever, and yet the man does nothing for you physically and sexually,” he commented.

It was my turn to be confused. “What do you mean?”

“He means that you like Alex, but you’re not physically or sexually attracted to him, which is why you haven’t jumped him yet,” Nellie said from the door.

“How long have you been standing there?” I asked her.

“Long enough to know that you’ve been with Alex for six months and nothing is happening for you,” she said, walking into the room.

“That’s not true! Why should a relationship be based on sex?” I asked.

“Because for all you know, he could be the most boring guy in bed and you’ll be stuck with him for the rest of your life,” she replied.

“What about personality?” I defended.

“Oh love, personality is just not as important sex. He will irritate you if he’s not great in the sheets. His personality will bore you at some point, and if there’s bad sex as well, you might as well commit suicide by hanging yourself with his clearly useless balls,” Fernando was the one to reply, making Nellie laugh in agreement.

I scowled. “That sounds extreme.”

“Sleep with him Bev, and do it tonight. Let it be your six monthiversary gift to him,” she suggested.

I shrugged. “We’ll see how the night goes.”

“And we’ll hear all about it tomorrow,” Fernando rejoiced.

I sighed. “I’m going back to work now.”

“Oh great! So, I came all this way for nothing,” Nellie commented.

“Oh shoot! I’m sorry,” I giggled.

“I’ll leave you guys to it,” Fernando chuckled before leaving.

“You’re such a goof sometimes,” my best friend shook her head with a smile on her face.

I stuck my tongue out at her. “Whatever! You love me.”

She rolled her eyes. “Unfortunately.”

“What are you here for Nell? What’s wrong?” I asked when I realized that she’d been crying.

“It’s nothing. I just needed to get away from the house and see my best friend,” she replied.

“Is it Geronimo?” I asked.

“No, it’s not Geronimo,” she said with a small smile. I know things still haven’t gone anywhere with him, as much as she’d like for them to.

“Is it your boss?” I frowned. Her whole demeanour changed.

“Yeah,” she sighed.

“What did he do?” I asked.

“Argh, he drinks too much and he’s irresponsible with his money Bev. We had a huge fight about the whole thing this morning and I told him that he needs to get help. He also has all these health issues but he doesn’t want to see a doctor,” she told me.

“Wow! You fought with him and he didn’t fire you for overstepping the boundaries?” I asked.

She shook her head. “No, he didn’t.”

“You seem to care a lot about him,” I noted.

“More than you know,” she muttered.

“But Nell, he’s your boss. He’s allowed to live his life the way he wants to. I don’t think this should be bothering you as much as it is,” I hinted.

She laughed humourlessly. “You think I’m in love with my boss?”

I nodded. “I don’t know how else to explain the way you clearly care for him,”

“It’s nothing like that Bev. Of all people, I thought you’d understand what it feels like to bond with someone and not have it be anything romantic,” she said, shaking her head.

“I’m sorry. I’m just trying to understand,” I apologized.

“I get it! I’d be as confused too if I was in your shoes, but I just really care about him. I want him to be ok,” she said.

I held her hand. “I’m sure he will be.”

“Would you mind coming to check up on him?” she asked.

“Nell, I’m not a doctor, and I don’t make house calls either,” I pointed out.

“I know, but can’t you do this for me? Like Dr Dickson said, you might as well be a doctor,” she pleaded.

“I don’t know Nell,” I said warily.

“Please just think about it ok?” she said. Before I could reply, Nikki rushed into the room.

“Bev, you’re needed upstairs,” she said breathlessly.

“Alright! I’m on my way. I promise to think about it. I’ll call you later,” I told Nellie before rushing out with Nikki.

It turned out that one of my patients had gone into cardiac arrest, so we had to bring her back to normal. From then on, my day just went downhill with my patients. It was such a gloomy day, that by the time my shift was over, I was feeling down as well.

I passed by the canteen to pick up a chocolate and a bag of Doritos. I grabbed a magazine as well before leaving the hospital. Alex was working until six, and he was picking me up at half past seven. I made it to the apartment by four, and decided to just sit and be one with myself for an hour.

I went to the TV with my chocolate and bag of Doritos, before settling on the couch with a gossip segment playing on TV. I listened to half of the nonsense they were talking about, but then again, this nonsense was my break from reality.

“It would appear that twenty eight year old pop sensation Mendel Gold knows just about the right people to get with in the entertainment business. She was spotted exchanging saliva with everyone’s favourite bad boy, actor, stuntman and director Mordecai Hart. The sultry ‘Give It To Me Good’ singer, was spotted looking very cosy with the famous actor. Now Michelle, what do you make of this?” the one woman asked her co-presenter.

“One thing I will say Jill, is that Mendel played her cards right in this situation. We all love Mordecai, and she’s definitely earned herself some fans from this, but I’m trying to determine whether it was a publicity stunt on her part or not,” Michelle replied.

“I definitely see what you’re saying. I thought the exact same thing,” Jill said.

“Speaking of Mordecai, we all know that he’s been cast as the leading star of the new blockbuster movie March, which will be hitting theatres in December next year. Our famous star was caught having the time of his life at his co-star Hunter Kist’s party last night. The whole crew and cast were apparently celebrating news that March will be picked up for a sequel. What do you have to say about these shots Jill?” Michelle asked.

“Look Michelle, if I was as wealthy as he is, and I was as famous as he was, of course I’d be like ‘screw it! I’m going to have fun’, but it also makes you question whether or not he’s perhaps having a little too much fun you know?” Jill replied while they showed pictures of the guy.

I couldn’t even tell the guy’s face from the photos they were showing, so I guess you’d have to be a diehard fan to know that it’s him you know? One thing I could tell though, was that he was most definitely having the time of his life as the presenters pointed out.

“As such a huge and influential star, I have to agree with you on the fact that perhaps he just needs to step back and re-evaluate the kind of image he’d like to have,” Michelle replied as they showed more pictures of the guy from different times and places.

The guy basically looks wasted in all of the photos, and it made me question what kind of life he must be living for things to be this bad for him. He can’t possibly be a happy person. These are just signs of a troubled mind.

I switched off the TV before I could hear anymore about the guy and went to take a nap instead. At six, I was up and getting ready for my date with Alex. I decided to keep things simple by wearing a pair of tan skinny jeans, a white tank top, with gold heels and accessories, and a cream cardigan. I had plans to wear a cream trench coat over as well.

Winter is back!

I left my hair in a straightened out bob. With fifteen minutes to spare still, I decided to go and check my post. I got downstairs just as a group of teenagers was coming in, letting in the cool breeze from outside with them. It was four girls and four guys.

“Hey Bev!” Shawna, one of the teenagers who happens to be my neighbour, greeted.

“Hey Shawna,” I smiled.

“Getting your mail?” she asked.

I nodded. “Yep!”

“I wish all girls could look this good getting the mail,” one of her guy friends smirked.

Shawna raised an eyebrow. “Yeah girl! Where you going looking so fine?”

“Date,” I responded.

“Ooh, with Dr Fine As Hell?” Deloris, Shawna’s best friend said dreamily.

“Is that what I’m known as?” Alex asked from behind the group.

He has a tendency of arriving at the perfect cue for him.

My eyes widened a little when I took in his outfit. He was dressed in black baggy jeans, dark brown boots, a black shirt, a light brown woollen jersey, a black winter jacket and a dark drown scarf. His hair was messily styled, and I’m pretty sure I was drooling.

“Damn!” Shawna’s friends said simultaneously.

“Hey Shawna, Gina, Deloris and Tasha. Hey guys,” Alex greeted the teens.

“Sup!” the guys greeted.

“Hey Dr Fine As Hell,” the girls replied in sing song.

Oh my word!

“Hey beautiful,” ‘Dr Fine As Hell’ chuckled before kissing me.

“Damn indeed,” I mumbled, cheeks rosy and all.

“Look at yall even matching and shit!” Gina, another one of the girls, commented. I hadn’t even realized.

I turned to Alex. “You’re early.”

He rolled his eyes, a smile on his face. “By like five minutes! Sue me,”

“I was just saying,” I giggled.

“Well, I brought flowers,” he smiled, handing me the red roses that I was only noticing then.

“Aaaaw,” the girls cooed.

“Thanks! Let me go and get my stuff,” I told him.

“I’ll come with you,” he added.

“Y’all have a good time and remember to dress him up before you mess her up,” Shawna shouted after us, making her friends laugh and holler.

You don’t even need to guess what colour my cheeks were.

Alex chuckled. “Who says such things?”

“Shawna,” I replied as I walked into my apartment. Alex closed the door behind him as I opened my mail.

The first two envelopes had newsletters that I’m subscribed to, while the other two envelopes had bad news for me. Apparently two of my cheques had bounced. This was the last thing I needed to know. As it is, I was struggling to pay off my mom’s operations. To learn that I was now about to lose my place was something else.

“Are you ok?” I barely heard Alex ask.

“Uh yeah! I’m fine,” I lied.

“Ok. Let’s head out,” he smiled.

Wow, he totally missed that.

I’m not saying that I would’ve even told him if he asked, but to know that he knows I’m lying to him would’ve been a little helpful. Yes, I’m talking about the ‘this is me you’re lying to’ line. For some reason, that line does actually have a purpose.

I grabbed my stuff and we headed out. He had actually bought a new car, despite having bought a new car eight months ago. He’d upgraded to the latest version of the same car. I just let him be because it’s his money and all, but I don’t understand people who spend money like that.

Or perhaps it’s because I don’t have that kind of money myself.

The whole ride was uncomfortably silent, and I honestly wasn’t sure why, but I was surprised when we made it outside of a recreation centre. He parked the car and came around to open the door for me before helping me out.

“Why are we here?” I asked.

“You’ll see,” was all he said before leading us inside.

You can imagine my surprise when we walked into a room that was entirely changed around to set up a miniature golfing course. By the looks of things, we were the only couple here, since the only other people were two guys, an older man and a younger man.

“Alex!” the older man beamed.

“Hey dad,” Alex smiled before hugging him.

Dad?

The old man turned to me. “You must be Beverly. We’ve heard so much about you.”

“Uhm, it’s nice to meet you?” I said awkwardly.

“Dad, as you guessed, this is my girlfriend Beverly Rhymes. Bev, this is my dad Carlton Oswald, and my little brother Dillon Oswald,” Alex introduced.

“It’s great to finally meet you Beverly. This idiot never shuts up about you!” Dillon chuckled.

“It’s lovely to meet you too,” I blushed.

“Well, everything is set up, so we’ll leave you to it. See you tomorrow son,” Carlton told his eldest son.

“Sure thing dad,” Alex nodded.

“Bye guys,” Dillon said before they left.

I smacked his arm. “Why didn’t you give me a heads up about your dad?”

“I knew you’d chicken out if I did,” he smirked.

“You’re absolutely horrible!” I mumbled.

“I’m sorry beautiful. I just wanted to surprise you,” he chuckled as he wrapped his arms around me.

“Note to self – if Alex has a surprise for you, panic,” I said sarcastically.

He mock glared. “Oh haha.”

“Please tell me that this place has always been like this,” I said, looking around us.

“It’s always been like this. I just rented it out for the night,” he smiled.

“You’re crazy you know?” I commented.

He winked. “I’m crazy about you.”

“Cheesy,” I giggled.

He shrugged. “It still does the job.”

“Whatever! Let’s play,” I smiled.

I don’t even know why I was so eager to play to begin with since I’m totally horrible at the whole thing. I lost miserably, and not even kisses from Alex could make me feel better, but he insisted that the place he was taking me to after dinner would be better.

We had dinner at some restaurant that serves Indian food. The food was so spicy that we spent most of the time in tears. That’s just how weak our tongues are. We were even sweating, and Alex even swore that steam was coming out of my ears.

Which was obviously ridiculous!

From the restaurant, we went to an ice-skating rink, and he was right in saying that it would make me feel better. It turns out I’m a better ice skater than he is, and I got to rub that in his face. The amount of times he face planted was just too funny.

“I can’t drive,” he mumbled as we left.

“Well, I guess you’re going to have to give me the keys,” I said. He looked horrified.

He never lets me drive after I almost crashed his car into a tree.

“I’m sure we can catch a cab,” he suggested.

I scowled. “I’m not catching a cab.”

He shrugged. “Then we’re staying here.”

“You mistrust me that much?” I asked, a little hurt by his actions.

“I love my car Bev,” he said warily.

“And it was one mistake,” I said before walking away from him. I couldn’t believe he wouldn’t trust me because of one mistake I made.

Because I couldn’t understand how his car worked by the way!

He ran after me. “Bev!”

I turned to face him. “What?”

“You can drive it, but only on one condition,” he offered.

“Let’s hear it,” I replied, annoyed that there was a condition to begin with.

“You have to give me one hell of a massage when we get back to your place,” he charmed.

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Oh really?”

“Yeah! I’m sorry for being an asshole,” he said as he hugged me.

“It’s ok! You’re my asshole,” I replied.

“Let’s get going! That massage is sounding greater by the second,” he admitted, making me laugh.

This time he gave me the breakdown on everything before we took off. Once I knew what and where everything is and was, I drove us back to my apartment. He rejoiced when we made it one piece – something I smacked him for.

When we got to the apartment, we settled for drinking coffee and talking first, before he decided that he wanted that massage. I led him to the bedroom and made him take off his jersey since he’d taken off his jacket in the lounge, and lie down on the bed, before straddling his back.

“Oh, that’s the spot!” he groaned when I put pressure on his lower back.

He sounded so sexual with his sounds that I was actually getting turned on, which is probably what possessed me to kiss his back. He stopped and turned over so that I was instead straddling his torso.

“What was that?” he asked. I couldn’t decipher the emotions on his face.

“I don’t know,” I said, embarrassed.

He caressed my cheek. “Bev, talk to me.”

“Don’t you find it strange that we haven’t had sex by now? You’ve never suggested it, and it feels weird,” I said lowly.

“I haven’t suggested it because you hadn’t said anything about it either,” he admitted.

“So, it’s got nothing to do with you not being sexually attracted to me right?” I asked timidly. I squeaked when he picked me up and placed me lower than I was before.

I could feel exactly what he intended me to feel.

“Does that answer your question?” he asked.

“Yes,” I whispered.

“Good!” he answered before sitting up to kiss me.

I was straddling him, and the room was certainly becoming hotter by the minute. He managed to get my cardigan off, leaving me in my tank top, before that was gone too, leaving me in my black, lacy bra. I’d also managed to get him completely shirtless.

Before we could work each other’s pants, his pager beeped from his pants. We pulled apart, panting, before he reached for the stupid device. He then reached for his phone, which had also just beeped. When the look on his face changed, I knew he had to go.

Ag, stupid doctors and saving the world!

“There’s just been a major accident and they need me to come in and operate on two of the patients. One of the others is in a critical condition, two of them are fine, and one life was lost. I’m sorry,” he apologized.

“It’s ok,” I sighed.

He ran his thumb across my bottom lip. “We’ll pick this up another time ok?”

“Ok,” I agreed. He leaned in and kissed me again before we got off the bed.

He put on his clothes, while I put the tank top back on. I was on my way to walking him out when I realized that I would also probably need to go in since I would be assigned to those patients after he operates on them. Heart surgeries normally take hours, and by the time he would be done, I’d be in for my shift.

“I’ll call you when I’m done,” he smiled.

“I’ll probably be there,” I replied.

“In that case, I’ll come and find you then. By the way, here you go,” he said before handing me a black box with a red bow on it.

“What is it?” I asked.

“Open it,” he urged. I opened it and found a white gold Rolex watch inside.

“Happy six monthiversary beautiful,” he said before kissing me again.

“I really have to go,” he groaned, his forehead resting on mine.

“I know,” I whined.

“I promise I’ll come find you as soon as I’m done,” he promised.

“I’ll be waiting and thanks for my gift,” I blushed.

Soon enough, he left. I felt alone in the apartment, but at least I was happy. I’d had a wonderful date, even though I was cock blocked by patients. I guess this is the life I should expect if I’m going to stay with Alex for the long term.

What a life to live.
