Chapter 109 Eat the rich

Chapter 109 Eat the rich
CHAPTER 109
Eat the rich.
SCARLETT – POINT OF VIEW

Roman and I retire to bed early. The evening was too much to handle, and we just wanted to sleep. I pulled out the ice cream from the freezer and topped it off with chocolate cookies. He wasn’t too eager to eat it, but apparently, he believes he owes me.

Truly, I am stunned that he was reading my texts, but this is a perfect time for it. I would have been able to prove that I wasn’t messing around with Dante again. The thought of conversing, plotting and doing anything with that bastard makes my skin crawl. He is from the pits of hell, bound to destroy what I’m building, but I wouldn’t let him. Roman and I will be fine. We are made of steel, after all.

I fall asleep in his bedroom and wake up to a beautiful day, until I check my phone.

My heart races as I scroll through countless notifications, articles and exposés written about us, messages from Eve, Elena, and Adeline. My chest constricts, and my vision blurs. Heat rushes through me, and I can barely calm down enough to read through.

Rome stirs and finds me in the throes of a panic attack.

He takes my phone from me, and his face hardens when he sees it.

Sweat beads on my forehead, and goosebumps break out over my skin.

“I need to read it.” I declare firmly, take the phone from him and dive in.

EXCLUSIVE: Billionaires at war, and the woman in between.

Last night, at an exclusive yacht party, Billionaire Roman Sterling and Italian Mogul Dante Ricci butt heads, well, they collided like two dying ships, and one woman was between them.

Roman Sterling used to be New York’s most eligible billionaire. A self-made magnate who has paved a path for himself in the hospitality atmosphere, as well as technology, cybersecurity, biotech and more. Roman is loaded. Everyone knows this. It is also common knowledge that he has never paraded any woman around. He has never been seen with a woman until Scarlett Brooks.

About six months ago, Roman attended a Gala with a young, beautiful and exotic beauty on his arm. Scarlett embodies grace, elegance and charm. Everyone liked her and enjoyed the fact that she pulled him out of his shell. Over a decade ago, it is believed that Roman and Dante used to be best friends until Dante reported stealing Roman’s then-girlfriend, Amara Russo. It caused a drift between the men, and seemingly, the gap has gotten wider ever since. Roman has nursed this wound for a while, never showing a woman to the public, keeping his lovers leashed, until Scarlett Brooks.

We were all intrigued by Ms Brooks, how she successfully captured the billionaire’s heart, how she has made him a fool for her. It’s no small fit, but no one can outrun Cupid’s arrow for long, not even Sterling.

Lately, everyone’s love for Ms Brooks has shifted to intrigue. Who is she, and why can we find next to nothing about her online?

We made searches on her and found a clean slate, not even a speeding ticket. Her slate is too clean, and it is the slate of a person who has a lot to hide. This has only brought up more questions. Ms Brooks isn’t the saviour we all thought her to be. Details of her relationship come to light, revealing that she sold out Roman. Paired with the all rumble that went down in Italy, our concerns are justified.

All these, paired with the chaos of last night that reportedly began as a simple conversation between the billionaires, which escalated the moment Scarlett stepped in. Sterling landed the first punch and multiple after that. Ricci didn’t fight back. Is it because he knows, deep down, he deserves it? It is a long way coming, after all.

Stick with us, and we’ll bring you the latest news on billionaires and the women they parade around. They say, eat the rich, well, this is dinner, for some.

I exhale deeply and let the phone drop on the bed.

Roman’s face is unreadable, but his hands are clenched.

“Don’t speak to Damian. Don’t serve them a lawsuit. Just, don’t.” I say softly, and he frowns at me, “What?”

“Think about it, Roman,” I take his hand in mine, “We need to appear untouchable. We shouldn’t care about what they write about us. They’ll always write something. You can’t buy all the media houses and blogs in the country.”

He clenches his jaw hard and shakes his head, “You were taken, Scarlett. You were kidnapped, and these bastards are putting the spotlight on you. What … what if the Cartels return? What if …”

I cup his cheeks and assure him, “We are safe here. I am safe. Nothing is going to happen to us. That was a case of wrong place and wrong time. I have no business with the cartels.”

My cheeks burn, but it’s only a white lie, right? It doesn’t count. It shouldn’t count.

His phone beeps, and he sighs, “Eve is here.”

My mouth falls open in shock, “Really?”

He smiles, “Yes. Come on.”

I tie a rope around me and rush down the stairs. Eve walks in with Rick behind her, dragging her suitcases.

“Hey, Scarlett,” she beams, and I hug her tightly.

I shower her face with kisses, and she giggles, accepting my affection.

“You’re in a good mood, considering the article that just broke.” She stares at me cautiously.

“I’ll worry about that later. Now, tell me everything.” I link our hands and pull her to my bedroom.

She tells me everything I need to know. She bagged a Gallery Show. Her works will be displayed. Everyone will see how talented she actually is. She tells about Rick, how their relationship has advanced. They’re dating now, a bit scandalous, but long overdue.

My thoughts stray to Emiliano. He has people all around. Can he have someone on me, in the house?

Can it be Rick? Could he be working for Emiliano?
