Chapter 99 Handle The Zoning Boards
"What are you talking about?" Mark asked Alex, his eyes narrowing.
"I want to offer you a permanent, equal partnership in the new development firm, not as a manager or an employee, but as a full owner with the same voting rights I have," Alex told him, his voice was a steady line of authority.
"The Harrington Group is dead, Mark, and the new firm needs two names at the top who aren't afraid of the work. It’s not a gift from a friend, it’s a business proposal from a partner who knows he can't do this without you."
Mark looked at him for a long time, and the noise of the shipyard seemed to fade into the background as the weight of the offer settled over him. He wasn't a kid anymore, and he wasn't just Sarah's son, he was a man who was being offered the keys to a kingdom he had helped to build.
He reached out and took Alex's hand, a firm and peer-level grip that sealed the deal without the need for a single lawyer.
"I’ll take the partnership, but I’m still wearing the hard hat, Alex," Mark said, a small smile finally breaking through his serious expression.
"You can wear whatever you want, as long as you keep the crews moving," Alex joked, he felt a sense of peace that was deeper than anything he had felt in months.
They spent the rest of the afternoon walking through the shipyard, selecting the final materials for the clinic’s interior and talking about the future of the firm. They didn't talk about Joseph, and they didn't talk about the board, they talked about the simplicity of a good design and the pride of a job well done.
It was a restorative day of brotherhood, a moment where the war finally felt like it was behind them and the future was something they could actually touch. By the time they drove back to the Vane estate, the sun was setting over the water and the air was cool and salt-thick.
They found Sarah in the sunroom, she was sitting by the window with the envelope of photos still sitting on her lap, but she didn't look sad, she looked settled.
She looked up when they walked in and she saw the look of quiet triumph on their faces, and she knew that the two men in her life had finally found their own way to bridge the gap between them.
"The materials are cleared, and Mark is officially my business partner as of three o'clock this afternoon," Alex said, he walked over to her and kissed her forehead, his presence a heavy and protective weight.
"I’m glad to hear it, because you’re going to need all the help you can get with the zoning board next week," Sarah said, her voice was warm and her eyes were bright.
"We can handle the zoning board, Mom, we’ve handled much worse than a few city clerks," Mark said, he sat down in the chair opposite her and reached for a glass of water.
The peace of the evening was broken by the sound of the front door buzzer, a sharp and rhythmic sound that made them all go still. The housekeeper walked in a moment later, she was carrying a silver tray with a single, thick envelope sitting in the center.
The envelope was made of heavy parchment, and it had a formal crest on the back that Alex recognized instantly as the mark of a high-level legal firm in London.
"This just arrived by international courier, it is addressed to the estate of Catherine Vane and the heirs of the Harrington Group," the housekeeper said, she set the tray on the table and stepped back.
Alex picked up the envelope and opened it, his eyes moving over the elegant, scripted text with a look of sudden, sharp focus. He didn't say anything for a long time, and Sarah watched as the color started to drain from his face.
"Is it from Helena? Is she trying to break the house arrest?" Sarah asked, her hand tightening on the arm of her chair.
"No, it isn't from Helena," Alex said, his voice was a low, hollow sound.
"It is from her personal legal counsel in London, and they are requesting a formal mediation session at the Vane estate regarding the family's remaining personal heirlooms and the maternal deeds that were never officially recorded in the Harrington audit."
"They want a mediation now? After everything that happened at the warehouse?" Mark asked, he stood up and walked over to look at the letter.
"They aren't just asking for a meeting, Sarah," Alex said, he looked at her and his eyes were full of a new kind of tension.
"They are claiming that there is a third party involved in the Vane trust, someone who has been living in the London estate under a different name, and they are saying that this person has the final authority to dissolve the maternal assets if we don't meet their terms."
