Chapter 27 CHAPTER 27
I stare at him for longer than I should, he knows it, I know it too.
The tension between us is palpable, and I'm tempted to pour this drink in his face but I'm in danger, not stupid.
There are two of them, one man who kept failing because he believes I should do better than everyone else and his sidekick trying to kill me.
If I thought that because he rescued me from Kane means he's the good guy, then I'm an idiot.
And I've been stupid once today, and that is what landed me here. To get out, I must stop panicking, stop worrying about my impending demise and actually try to play my way out of this.
I shut my lips tightly around the rim of the cup and tip it forward.
Suddenly, the cup was kicked out of my hand angrily and a towel shoved in my mouth, trying to clean water that wasn't there.
“What is wrong with you man? I'm trying to help you here!”
He didn't say a word in response, just pushed my eyelids back and satisfied, he turned around and advanced on his partner and began pummeling the guy, and both of them began thrashing each other around the room.
I got up, seeing an escape window gloriously appear.
Dangerous though, with their fangs and claws out and scraping each other open all over the big room.
And their speed?
Terrifying.
But I doubt I'll get another chance like this so I rush off the bed and make a beeline for the door on the other side of the room.
They closed the path I saw before me, Mr Valkori punching his brother, snarling and being nothing like the human face he had a few seconds ago.
Marcus flipped him over equally and they left my path again and I continued running.
I luckily get to the door and just as my lock would have it, it's bolted.
Opening it, I wince when it makes a screeching sound.
Everywhere went silent instantly.
But I don't stop, I pull the door open and run out, screaming for help as I run.
My escape lasts approximately five seconds before I'm snatched from the ground and another three seconds to be back inside that room.
“Fucking pack all that shit and throw em in the truck. We're leaving now!” He growled at his friend, “This is all your fucking fault! Meddling shit.”
“It's not my fault you're thinking with your cock and not your brain!”
“Marcus, except you want us to murder this entire town, then get your shit moving before they come here with firelit torches screaming for their child.”
All through the exchange, I was stuck by his side, his hold on me tighter than a vice grip and I couldn't even cry, I was just overwhelmed.
The day he rescued me in school suddenly makes sense now, and once again, I'm reminded I should have listened to my instincts.
But said instincts have never saved me before, no matter how much I listened to it, I still got into trouble by my mom's hand and now, if I survive, I'll have to relearn to trust it.
To avoid ending up with my head dangling towards the ground while two monsters argue over my life or death.
I feel something itching at me and I went to scratch it but I realized it's not outside, it's coming from the back of my head.
From an itch, it morphs into a tingle that peaks and then stops.
Marcus finally parks the bag and grumpily walks out of the door.
People were already there, making demands and he tells them everything is fine.
I'm excited, thinking they'll fight harder, push down the door and come for me.
But I hear their footsteps recede.
“Hey! I'm here! Help!”
“It's no use,” Mr Valkori say as he dropped me on the bed, “they've been compelled.”
“Co-compelled? What is this? A Vampire parody?”
“That movie is a mockery of my kind but you can say so.”
“You… you're a vampire?”
“It's not like you to stammer Sera. Yes I'm a vampire and we're going to be travelling to my brother's Palace because you're a werewolf born to destroy us.”
I laugh because it's very funny.
My stomach hurts but I don't stop laughing.
Until I notice he's very serious, unmoving, not telling me haha, it's a wild joke.
So I stop and face this lunatic, trying to reason with him.
“I think if I were a werewolf, I would definitely know that Mr Valkori.”
“Call me Cael.”
“But you're my… teacher.”
He lets out a short laugh.
“That is what you can call a parody. This entire thing is. I hate coats, I'm more of a jeans type of guy. I hate driving cars and I –”
“I don't care about your character profile, stop filling my head with nonsense. I'm not a werewolf, I assume the bastard that tried to ruin my life is and I promise you, I've never turned into one of those things so please, let me go back home. I swear I'll never tell anyone about this.”
“Your wolf is subdued by the injections your father poured into your soul. And if I were scared of you telling anyone anything, I would have wiped your memory, that's not it. You're a tale as old as the mad, now dead King. Our entire species has been preparing for your arrival, some getting ready to take advantage of you and the rest of us… Well, you don't need to know all of that right now. Just know that I can't let you go. Don't bother fighting it, you won't be able to get away.”
“The same words Kane said before he tried to –”
“Don't you dare compare me to that scoundrel!”
“I'm not the one making the rules. I see white, I call white. You might not want to force yourself into my body, but from your friend's attitude, you want me dead. I want you to know that although I might not know how to fight for the preservation of the sanctity and safety of my body, but my life? I'll fight. You might eventually kill me, but it won't be an easy job for you Mr Valkori.”
And then I turn towards the other side of the bed.
I began to feel that itch again as he picked me from the bed again, but this time, it doesn't fade away.
As if I'm going insane from everything happening, I hear a voice in my head.
“My human. We've been apart for too long.”
