Chapter 39 Greed.
Romeo kept sparing glances at her he drove, he didn't like the infinity that kept them apart. He never meant for her to get hurt like that. He took one last look at her and decided to speak up.
"Listen I didn't say any of those things to hurt your feelings, all I wanted to do was to make your parents understand the kind of relationship we had--"
"Can you stop saying that? I-- I told you that I understand." She responded without looking at him.
"If you understand then look at me," his voice had a different tone to it. Anger. "Hey!" He said sternly. "I don't appreciate this infinity you are trying to put between us. I'm sorry if I have hurt your feelings but this is not the way to settle anything."
"You didn't hurt my feelings, okay!" She responded sharply. Her tone could slice through rock perfectly without rough edges.
"Then what is this? Look at me when I am talking to you." His voice darkened. The soft and charming Prince sounded dominant and commanding but not in a harsh way.
She felt compelled to look at him. His emerald eyes burned through her skin as he looked at her. She felt so foolish for even getting mad, suddenly, her lips parted and a soft laughter escaped them.
His brows twitched confusedly. "What is... What is this? What is going on? One of those moments where you remembered something from the past and it makes you laugh?"
She shook her head. "No, you're the one making me laugh. What's with the attempt to sound commanding?"
He smiled. "I thought it would work, I'm not all soft on the inside you know."
"Sure you aren't." She rolled her eyes.
"Hey, what is that supposed to mean?"
She started laughing again and the bad mood disappeared just like that. Both of them had forgotten why they were arguing just a while ago and Cara seemed to have calmed down a bit. Or maybe she was faking it?
But at least the arguing had stopped.
They arrived at the complex building she resided at and Romeo turned to look at her. "Are we still on?" His voice was calm and quiet.
"On what? Land? Yeah I think so?" Cara sarcastically responded.
He rolled his eyes. "You know what I mean. I need to know if I should come pick you up tomorrow."
She was silent for more than a moment, probably thinking about turning him down after what happened between them that day, but she nodded her head with a slight smile. "Sure, come pick me up."
A relieved smile played on his face. "Alright, I'll be here by ten, our ship leaves by ten so please be done before I arrive. I know you ladies take forever just to apply simple lipstick speak less of the full make up so if you have to wake up by three am to be ready on time, please do."
"Oh please." She rolled her eyes. Taking off her seat belt, she pushed open the door and got down. Romeo followed.
Turning around, he was already standing behind her and she gave him a warm smile. "I'll see you tomorrow, on time and ready."
"We'll see," his lips curved into a seductive smile as he looked her up and down.
She turned around to leave but Romeo gripped her wrist and pulled her back softly. "Hey, we good?"
"You think if we weren't good, I would trust you enough to go onto the vast sea with you? Without a gun or some sort of weapon for protection?" She arched her brow at him.
"Ha ha ha." He laughed sarcastically. "I'll see you soon."
She nodded and he finally let go of her hand. He just stood there and watched her leave.
Romeo would be lying if he said he didn't know the impact of his words, his heart was heavy with guilt but at least he had gotten a message across. A message to let her know that he couldn't be with her as sad and disheartening as it was to him.
He was greedy enough to want her around but smart enough to know he couldn't have her. No. Not with the obstacle that stood in his way.
He stared at her as she went into her complex building, leaning on his car with his hands in his pocket. He swallowed, his Adam's apple moving seductively, then ran his hand through his hair before walking back to the driver's seat and entering his car.
Cara walked into her apartment with a heavy heart. The day had started out great but ended like that. Her immaturity had taken the best of her.
Why did she have to make it obvious that she was hurt by his words? Why did she not realize what her emotions were making her do until it was too late?
She got the message loud and clear, he didn't want her and he would never consider her no matter how long they remained together. It was enough reason to never see him again, at least until her head was in the right place, but she couldn't do that.
She didn't want to go on the trip with him, maybe it would help her feel better. As much as she wanted to let him go, she was still greedy enough to want to keep him close no matter what he said.
Those eyes weren't something to forget so easily, his charismatic and charming personalities were impossible to let go of.
And even though she knew she could not have him, even if he finally wanted her back, she still wanted him around.
So... With a sigh... She decided she would savor the moments she could still have with him and make it last for as long as she could. Sure, it was to feed her greed, but at least it would help her handle her feelings for him.
"Alright then!" She said to herself. "Let's do this! Now where are my cosmetics products?"
She walked into her room to get ready.
