Chapter 393
The rift screamed.
Not with sound alone, but with strain, with resistance, with the fury of reality being forced to admit something it had not prepared for. Light bent around Dimitri’s silhouette as he pushed through, shoulders braced, teeth bared, one hand gripping the torn edge of space as if it were flesh he could rip wider by will alone.
“Sapphire!”
Her name cut through her like heat.
The ancient figure moved instantly.
Not to attack Dimitri.
To adjust.
The plateau shuddered beneath Sapphire’s feet as invisible lines realigned. The air thickened, pressing down on her chest, forcing each breath to feel earned. The pull inside her twisted sharply, responding not to the intruder, but to the choice she had not yet made.
Dimitri took another step forward, half his body now through the tear, blood running freely from a gash along his temple. His eyes locked onto her, wild with fear and relief and something dangerously close to desperation.
“You have to come with me,” he shouted. “Now.”
The ancient entity raised one hand.
The rift slowed.
Not closing.
Suspending.
Dimitri slammed his fist into the invisible resistance, roaring in frustration as the space refused to give further.
Sapphire staggered, pain blooming behind her eyes. “Don’t hurt him.”
The figure did not look at her. “That depends entirely on you.”
Her nails bit into her palms. “You said I could choose.”
“Yes.”
“Then let him pass.”
At that, the entity finally turned fully toward her. The fractures beneath his skin glowed brighter, reacting to the tension in the realm.
“You misunderstand,” he said calmly. “Choice does not mean mercy. It means consequence.”
Dimitri’s voice dropped, urgent and raw. “Sapphire, don’t listen to him. Whatever he’s offering, it’s a lie.”
The whispering surged, louder now, more insistent. Shadows rippled across the reflective stone, and Sapphire saw it again in the surface beneath her feet.
The mimic.
Standing behind her reflection.
Closer than before.
Her breath hitched. “It’s learning,” she said hoarsely. “Isn’t it?”
The entity inclined his head. “Rapidly.”
“If I go with Dimitri,” she continued, forcing the words out despite the tremor in her voice, “it follows.”
“Yes.”
“If I stay…”
“It remains incomplete.”
Dimitri shook his head violently. “We’ll deal with it together. Michael is already fighting it on the other side. Aiden too. You don’t have to do this alone.”
Her chest tightened at Michael’s name. “He’s alive?”
“Barely,” Dimitri snapped. “But he will be, if you come back.”
The entity stepped closer again, his presence bending the light around him. “If she leaves now,” he said to Dimitri, “your world inherits a god-shaped wound.”
Sapphire’s heart pounded. “And if I stay?”
“You inherit one less world.”
The words were quiet.
Absolute.
The plateau trembled again, deeper this time. Fine fractures spread across the stone, glowing faintly as something below pushed upward, impatient.
Dimitri’s voice cracked. “Sapphire, please.”
She closed her eyes.
For one fragile second, she let herself feel him. The weight of his hand in hers. The steadiness of his breathing beside her in the dark. The way he always stood between her and the worst of the world, even when he was terrified.
She opened her eyes again.
“I need time,” she said.
The entity frowned slightly. “Time accelerates degradation.”
“Then shorten it,” she shot back. “But don’t pretend this is balance. You’re afraid.”
That gave him pause.
“Afraid,” she pressed, stepping closer to him now, “because if I choose neither, if I refuse to be consumed or released, you lose control of the equation.”
The whispering faltered.
Just for a moment.
Dimitri stared at her, confusion mixing with awe. “What are you doing?”
“Buying us seconds,” she whispered back.
The entity’s gaze sharpened. “Defiance does not alter inevitability.”
“No,” Sapphire agreed. “But it changes timing.”
She turned suddenly, facing the rift, locking eyes with Dimitri. “Listen to me. Whatever happens next, you cannot let the mimic reach the core. Promise me.”
Dimitri slammed his hand against the barrier again. “I’m not leaving you here.”
“You already are,” she said softly.
Pain flashed across his face like a physical blow. “Sapphire—”
She reached out.
Her fingers brushed the invisible divide between them, warmth meeting resistance. The contact sent a shockwave through the plateau, light flaring beneath her feet as something deep within her answered the touch.
The entity recoiled half a step, eyes widening.
“Interesting,” he murmured.
The fractures beneath his skin spread rapidly now, reacting not to Dimitri’s intrusion, but to Sapphire herself.
The mimic screamed.
Not aloud.
Inside her head.
The pressure surged violently, memories tearing loose in jagged fragments. Faces. Names. Places. All trying to escape at once.
Sapphire cried out, dropping to one knee as pain lanced through her spine.
The entity recovered quickly. “Your echo is attempting synchronization.”
Dimitri’s voice broke. “Sapphire!”
She looked up at him, tears blurring her vision. “I’m sorry.”
The entity raised both hands now, and the sky above them darkened for the first time. Something vast shifted beyond perception, responding to his call.
“If you remain,” he said, voice resonating with the weight of the realm, “I will seal this boundary. He will not reach you again.”
Dimitri roared in fury, pounding against the barrier as cracks spiderwebbed outward from his fists. “You don’t get to decide that.”
“I already have.”
The plateau began to sink.
Not downward.
Inward.
The world folded around Sapphire, compressing space as the entity began drawing her deeper into the core of the realm. The pull inside her intensified, dragging at her soul with relentless precision.
She screamed as something tore free.
Not a memory.
A connection.
Michael’s presence vanished from her senses entirely, severed so abruptly it left her gasping like she had lost oxygen.
“No,” she sobbed.
The entity watched impassively. “Necessary.”
The mimic surged forward, its form bleeding into the stone beneath her, reaching, grasping, hungry.
Sapphire’s vision blurred, darkness creeping at the edges.
Dimitri shouted something she couldn’t hear anymore.
The rift shuddered violently, light flaring as it began to collapse under the strain.
The entity stepped back, preparing to close it completely.
And then—
A new force struck the plateau.
Not from the rift.
From below.
The stone exploded upward in a blinding burst of light and shadow as a pulse of raw power erupted from beneath Sapphire, throwing the entity backward with a soundless snarl.
The whispering turned into a roar.
The mimic shrieked in fury as the ground split open, releasing a blinding surge of energy that wrapped around Sapphire like a cocoon.
The entity stared, stunned.
“That,” he said slowly, “should not be possible.”
Sapphire screamed as the light engulfed her, her body lifting off the ground as something ancient and familiar surged awake inside her chest.
The last thing she saw before the world shattered was Dimitri’s eyes, wide with terror and hope, as the rift collapsed completely.
And then—
Everything went white.
