Chapter 20: The Mother Of Embers
The moment Seren spoke her mother’s name, an uneasy silence filled the chamber heavy, suffocating, like the air before a lightning strike.
Rowan was the first to break it. “Mother? Seren… she’s gone. She died in the apartment explosion.”
“No,” Seren whispered. Her new flame flickered along her pulse. “She didn’t die. She was taken.”
Kaien stiffened. “Taken by who?”
“The Covenant,” Seren said. “But she didn’t stay their prisoner.”
She turned toward the chamber entrance. The Cradle’s trial had not weakened her. It had sharpened her. Every ember in her veins shivered, pointing north toward a power she recognized in her marrow and feared in equal measure.
“Mother is leading them,” Seren said quietly. “The army outside. I felt her. The flame recognized her.”
Rowan looked like he’d been struck. “If that’s true if she’s alive then why would she join them?”
Seren swallowed a knot of heat. “Because she always had magic. Long before we did. She hid it. She hid everything.”
Kaien’s expression turned grim. “We need to get out of here. Whatever’s coming won’t wait.”
The Cradle’s doors had opened again, revealing a long, ascending corridor lit by a pale fireline running down the center. As they stepped forward, the light flowed with them guiding their path, illuminating ancient murals depicting dragons shattering chains of molten stone.
Seren paused at one.
A dragon coiled over a kneeling woman black hair, ember tattoos across her arms, eyes lit like dying coals.
Her mother.
The mural rippled faintly as Seren raised a hand toward it.
“She wasn’t a victim,” Seren murmured. “She was a vessel.”
The Rise to the Surface
The ascent felt endless. Each step was heavy with revelation and dread, but the path never wavered. When they finally reached the upper threshold, a blast of wind hit them hot, metallic, carrying the scent of burning sky.
Kaien drew his sword. Rowan shaded his eyes.
Seren stepped out first.
They emerged onto a massive plateau of obsidian stone. Above them stretched a sky in turmoil dark clouds swirling in a spiral, pierced by veins of red lightning that cracked down into the distant valley.
And in the valley below…
An army waited.
Thousands of Covenant war mages in ember armor. Lines of black-robed adepts tracing runes into the ground. Summoned beasts of molten stone shaking the earth with every step.
And at their front, atop a raised platform carved from cooled magma
A woman with hair like falling ash and eyes burning with a furnace’s glow.
Seren’s mother.
Elyra Ardent.
Her heart seized.
Rowan stumbled forward, voice breaking. “Mom?”
As if hearing him across the impossible distance, Elyra lifted her head. Her gaze cut to the plateau like a blade.
And she smiled.
Not gently.
Not lovingly.
But with the fierce, exultant certainty of a queen reclaiming a crown.
The Mother of Embers
The wind howled as Elyra raised a hand, and her voice rolled across the valley amplified by magic, thunder, and something far older.
“Seren Ardent! Flame in my blood. Spark of my legacy.
The Cradle has accepted you.”
Her tone was triumphant almost proud.
Almost.
“Come down,” Elyra commanded. “There is no more need to run from what you are.”
Seren’s breathing turned sharp.
Kaien murmured, “She’s… powerful. More than Arkan ever was.”
“She’s not Arkan’s heir,” Seren said numbly. “She’s his replacement.”
Rowan’s hands shook. “No. No, she wouldn’t join them. There has to be a reason.”
“There is,” Seren said quietly. “Power.”
Elyra spoke again, her voice resonating through the mountains.
“Daughter of fire let us unite the flames.
The Ember Throne awaits its rightful blood.”
Seren’s stomach twisted.
Her mother wasn’t just alive.
She was the new High Flame.
The Confrontation Begins
Seren stepped to the edge of the plateau.
The Covenant army stirred, thousands of eyes turning toward her. Some whispered in awe. Others bowed. A line of molten beasts rumbled low, flames flickering under their stone skins.
Elyra raised both arms.
A ring of fire erupted around her platform forming a throne-shaped halo.
“Seren,” she called, “come home.”
Seren’s voice cracked as she shouted back, “Why? Why did you leave us? Why did you lie to us?”
Her mother’s expression softened just enough to hurt.
“To protect you.”
Seren flinched.
“I hid your bloodline,” Elyra continued. “I hid your flame. I hid you from those who wanted to use you until the night they came.”
She paused.
“The apartment was not an accident, my love. It was a purge. And I chose who survived it.”
Seren’s breath died in her throat.
Rowan stared down in horror. “Mom… what do you mean you chose?”
Elyra lifted her chin.
Proud. Unrepentant.
“You were meant to die, Rowan.
And Seren was meant to burn.”
Rowan staggered back like she’d stabbed him.
Kaien swore under his breath. “She’s gone, Seren. She’s lost to the flame.”
“No…” Rowan whispered, voice breaking. “No, this isn’t her. It can’t be.”
Elyra’s voice hardened into steel.
“Rowan, you were always the weaker spark.
Seren was the future.”
Seren’s heart tore.
The whitefire inside her roared.
Kaien’s Warning
Kaien stepped in front of Seren, voice low, urgent.
“Seren. Listen to me. She wants you to lose control. That army isn’t just waiting for orders they’re waiting for a catalyst.”
Seren stared blankly. “A catalyst for what?”
“For a ritual,” Kaien said grimly. “This entire valley is a sigil. Look.”
Seren forced herself to focus.
And saw it.
The way the troops were positioned.
The shape of the ridges.
The molten beasts forming outer rings.
A massive dragon-shaped glyph carved into the land itself.
Rowan choked out a breath. “She wants to awaken something.”
Kaien nodded. “Not just something. The Ember Sovereign.”
Seren’s pulse faltered.
The only entity older than the Solar Wyrm.
The first fire.
The one whose ashes created the leylines themselves.
If awakened
The world would burn.
The Breaking Moment
Elyra extended a hand toward Seren, fire coiling around her fingers.
“Come to me, daughter.
Together we will reign.
Together we will resurrect the Sovereign and forge a new world.”
Seren shook, torn between horror and heartbreak.
Kaien gripped her arm. “Seren. Look at me. You don’t have to face her alone.”
Rowan stepped to her other side. “We’re with you. Whatever happens.”
Their warmth grounded her.
But the flame inside her?
It was screaming.
Seren stepped forward, fire crackling up her spine.
“No,” she said, voice shaking from fury and pain. “I won’t join you.
Not after what you did.
Not after what you became.”
Elyra’s smile vanished.
Something colder replaced it.
Something ancient.
“Then you stand against your own blood.”
The army roared in response.
Seren’s whitefire flared, blazing bright enough to crack the obsidian beneath her feet.
She raised her chin.
“I stand against anyone who tries to burn the world.”
Her mother’s eyes narrowed two blazing coals of wrath.
“Then you are no daughter of mine.”
The ground trembled.
The army surged forward.
Kaien drew his blade, Rowan summoned raw flame, and Seren let whitefire ignite in her palms.
The war had begun.
