Chapter 16: The Trial Of Flame And Shadow
Shadows struck first.
A dozen forms burst from the liquid-dark pool beasts of smoke with ember cores embedded in their chests, like stolen hearts beating with false life. Their bodies twisted in unnatural ways, limbs bending like molten metal forced into shapes that defied anatomy.
Seren raised her hands, fire erupting from her palms in a blazing sweep.
The dragonsfire tore through three of the creatures, ripping them apart in a burst of gold and ash but the others twisted around the flames, sliding forward like ink across water.
Rowan pulled her back. “They absorb the heat! Aim for the cores!”
Kaien darted past them, blades of shadow-steel drawn. “Don’t stand still! Move!”
Seren launched herself forward, fire surging through her veins, golden light burning away the rising cold invading her chest. She aimed for the nearest creature its ember-heart pulsing like a dying sun.
Her fist struck its chest.
A blast of molten light exploded outward.
The creature wailed if the scraping, jagged noise could be called a wail and collapsed into ash.
But the moment the creature dissolved, the floating figure above the pool spoke again.
One heart reclaimed. Eleven remain.
Seren froze.
“Reclaimed?” she whispered.
Kaien didn’t slow. “Worry later!”
The creatures surged forward again, faster this time.
Rowan raised a shield of flame around Seren as another beast lunged. Its jaws clamped around the shield, absorbing fire into its core. Rowan gritted his teeth.
“I can’t hold it!”
Seren pushed her hand through his weakening shield, gripping the creature’s ember-heart directly. Its heat burned against her palm wrong heat, stolen heat.
She squeezed.
The heart shattered like glass.
Two down.
Fire Against Fire
Kaien leapt onto a pillar of black bone, pushing off and landing on the back of a creature twice his size. His blades stabbed through its chest, missing the core by inches. The creature bucked wildly, slamming him into a wall.
“Kaien!” Seren shouted.
He slid down the wall, breath knocked from his lungs. The beast lunged for him again.
Seren didn’t think she ran.
Her flames erupted, golden wings bursting from her back, flickering with unstable intensity. She sprinted across the molten platform and launched herself into the air. Her foot connected with the beast’s head in a fiery arc, and as it reeled back, she reached for its core
The creature exploded.
Seren flew backward, hitting the ground hard.
Kaien crawled to her. “Don’t grab the heart if it’s overcharged. They’re adapting.”
“Fantastic,” Rowan muttered as he deflected claws of shadow from another creature. “Shadow beasts that learn.”
Kaien stood, blades dripping with blackened ember residue. “And they learn fast.”
The floating figure above the pool watched, unmoving.
Strength reveals itself in pressure.
But corruption reveals itself in reflection.
Seren forced herself to her feet.
“What does that mean?”
The echo did not answer.
Instead, four more beasts climbed out of the pool.
Rowan groaned. “They’re multiplying.”
Kaien cursed. “No they’re dividing.”
Seren’s fire pulsed violently at that word.
Dividing.
Splitting.
Splitting like memory. Like identity. Like
Her stomach twisted.
“Rowan. Kaien.” Her voice trembled.
They noticed immediately.
“What’s wrong?” Rowan asked.
Seren lifted her hand. Her flame flickered gold… then ember-red… then black.
Rowan’s eyes widened. “Seren your fire is changing.”
Kaien stepped closer, expression grave. “The Cradle is testing you. It’s drawing your flame toward shadow.”
“No,” Seren whispered. “It’s revealing what’s already there.”
The Shifting Flame
The beasts attacked again, but Seren barely registered them.
Inside her chest, two fires warred:
Gold.
And shadow.
One familiar warm, bright, alive.
The other cold, ancient, coiled like a serpent waiting for the right moment to strike.
Rowan slashed through the creatures relentlessly, but for every heart shattered, another beast rose from the pool.
Kaien backed beside him. “We can’t keep fighting forever.”
Seren swallowed hard. The truth hit her like stone:
The beasts weren’t the trial.
She was.
Her flame was.
She closed her eyes and let the Cradle’s heartbeat thunder through her bones.
The golden light inside her rose like a sun.
The shadowlight rose like a void.
They collided.
Seren screamed.
Her fire erupted outward, sweeping across the chamber in a wave that extinguished every shadow-beast instantly. The creatures dissolved into shimmering dust, their ember cores cracking into fragments of light.
Rowan stared. “Seren”
But Seren didn’t look up.
She looked at her hands.
One glowed gold.
The other glowed black.
Her heart pounded wildly.
Kaien’s voice was low, shaken. “Your flames are… split.”
Seren felt it in her soul.
One flame born of dragons.
One flame born of something far older.
And she held both.
The floating figure descended slowly, its wings ablaze.
You have passed the First Trial.
Seren’s breath stilled.
“That was a trial?”
The figure extended a hand toward her. Ember motes danced around its fingers.
Dragonfire chooses its wielder.
But shadowfire reveals one’s truth.
Seren took a step back. “Shadowfire isn’t mine.”
The figure tilted its head.
Child of Ember, you carry more origins than you understand.
Seren’s heart hammered.
More origins?
Rowan moved in front of her. “She’s not corrupted. She’s not”
Not corrupted. The figure’s voice echoed through the chamber.
Merged.
Silence.
The pool of liquid shadow stilled.
Kaien’s eyes widened in horror. “Merged? With what?”
The echo lifted its hand.
The pool rippled.
A reflection rose from its surface.
Seren gasped.
It was her.
A perfect mirror.
But not golden.
Not bright.
Her reflection had shadowfire flowing through her veins like black lightning. Eyes burning ember-red. Wings dark as volcanic glass.
A Seren forged entirely in darkness.
Rowan stepped back instinctively. “What what is that?”
Kaien’s blade dropped to his side. “Her… other half.”
Seren shook her head. “No. That isn’t me.”
The reflection stared back with a faint, knowing smile.
The echo floated above them, its voice resonant and unyielding.
The Second Trial begins.
Face the version of yourself the shadow hungers to create.
Seren’s reflection stepped out of the pool.
Fully formed.
Fully alive.
Its flames flared with cold, beautiful menace.
Rowan grabbed Seren’s arm. “Seren you can’t fight yourself.”
Kaien’s expression hardened. “She has to.”
Seren swallowed, heart shaking.
Her reflection’s eyes locked onto hers.
And it spoke with her voice
“Only one of us leaves the Cradle.”
