Chapter 113
Levi was looking around, and when he saw me coming, he walked a few steps toward me.
"What took you so long?"
I'd clearly only been gone a few minutes and had only stayed a bit longer after overhearing Jessa and Chase's conversation.
"Have some water first."
I handed him the water, thinking about Chase being sick.
Levi unscrewed the cap and handed it to me. "You drink first. I think you need it more than I do."
"Huh?"
"Your lips are so dry they're cracked."
I pressed my lips together and took a sip.
After I finished drinking, Levi took the bottle back and gulped down a big mouthful.
"Hey!"
Too late - he'd already swallowed. He never shared a bottle with me, and neither would I.
Levi casually put the water back in the bag.
"Let's go."
That's when I noticed he'd already picked up the X-rays.
"Aren't you going to see the doctor?"
"Already did."
My head felt foggy. Had he already seen the doctor in just those few minutes?
Levi tapped my head. "I think you're the one who needs a checkup - for anxiety."
"You're the anxious one. I'm perfectly fine."
I rubbed my head. My mind was indeed a mess. I thought I'd be completely calm about Chase being sick, but clearly I wasn't doing well enough - I was rattled.
"Does it hurt?"
Levi reached his hand over. I pushed it back. "It doesn't hurt. Looks like you're really fine, otherwise you wouldn't have the energy to hit me."
"That was hitting you?"
I nodded. "Yeah, same motion, different force."
I knew I was being unreasonable. I didn't even know why I was saying these things - it almost felt like I was acting cute. The moment I realized this, I immediately changed my attitude.
When dealing with him, I couldn't just fall for him every time he was a little nice to me.
"Levi, what are you guys doing here?"
Jessa's voice came from behind us. I really regretted not leaving faster - now they were going to talk again.
"Getting a checkup."
Even though they weren't in contact anymore, seeing them together still made me unhappy.
"Which one of you is sick?"
"Me," Levi said.
Jessa quickly stepped forward, walking past me to stand in front of him.
"What happened? Is it serious?"
Levi's expression didn't change. "It's nothing."
"That's good."
Jessa turned around and glanced at me, looking like she wanted to say something but held back.
She probably wanted to mention Chase to me, but felt it wasn't appropriate, so she didn't.
"Let's go."
Levi took my hand. He'd never made such an intimate gesture with me in front of Jessa before.
There was disappointment in Jessa's eyes. As a woman myself, I understood that emotion.
We walked hand in hand for a few steps before Jessa spoke again.
"Levi!"
Levi stopped, and I stopped with him.
"Take care of yourself, don't overwork."
Those two sentences from Jessa were full of emotion. I couldn't detect any phoniness in them.
"Hey..."
Levi pulled me forward, and I almost fell. He didn't respond, just pulled me along, gripping my hand tightly.
"Hey, isn't that a bit rude?"
I asked while trying to keep up with his pace.
He kept walking in silence, not even acknowledging me now.
...
All night long, I was like someone under a spell - completely unable to sleep.
I turned over several times and bumped into Levi. He was sleeping peacefully, not moving at all.
I really missed my mom. I wanted to tell her that Chase was sick now. I wanted to say to her that evil gets what it deserves, that his punishment had finally come.
But for some reason, I also wanted to cry. I don't know if it was what people call blood ties at work, but I actually kind of wanted to know how serious it was, whether he would die.
The next day, when Levi woke up, I closed my eyes and pretended to sleep.
He got out of bed very quietly, then went to wash up, probably trying not to wake me. Actually, I was extremely, extremely awake right now.
Only after he closed the bedroom door did I rub my eyes. I felt swollen all over. The feeling of not sleeping all night was really awful.
I couldn't help but admire Nola again - she often stayed up late but acted like nothing happened the next day.
I timed it right, watching from the window until I saw Levi get in the car, then I got up.
Just as I was about to have breakfast and was waving hello to Indigo, my phone rang.
"Hello, good morning."
I saw it was the doctor who had treated me before calling. I was a bit confused.
"Ms. Blair Ember, Mr. Morgan has one more test result from last night that he didn't pick up. The results are ready now. If you're not busy, could you come to the hospital to get it?"
"Okay, see you soon."
The doctor probably knew Levi was busy, so he called me instead. Or maybe Levi habitually left my number - I used to run errands for him all the time.
I hurriedly ate a bite of breakfast and went to the hospital.
On the way, I was also complaining about Levi. Times had changed - I had to work now too, my time was tight, and I still had to do these trivial things for him.
It was ridiculous when you thought about it. He had time to arrange bodyguards to secretly protect me, but couldn't arrange someone to pick up his test results!
After leaving the doctor's office, I happened to run into Chase and Jessa.
He looked furious, not caring at all whether anyone was around as he yelled at Jessa.
"That mom of yours is a real slut. She lied to me all these years. If I didn't need a bone marrow match, I still wouldn't know you're not my child, you bastard!"
What? Jessa wasn't his biological child?
Jessa was so angry that she was stamping her feet. "Maybe the hospital made a mistake."
"How could it be wrong in black and white? The test results say it as clear as day. You'd better go ask her in prison whose bastard you really are!"
"You really are fickle. When you tricked me into coming to the hospital for the matching test, your attitude was so good. And now? You're cursing at me again."
That Jessa was willing to come to the hospital for the matching test showed she really thought of herself as his daughter. Maybe she had only just found out, too, that she wasn't his biological daughter.
"When she got together with me back then, she must have already been fooling around with someone else. Ha, I'm really unlucky - been cheated on all these years!"
My heart felt indescribably bitter. Back then, for Jessa and her mom, he didn't hesitate to drive us away. But when Jessa was first born, why didn't Chase do a paternity test?
It seemed he trusted them more, willing to lose my mom and me.
"Let me give you some friendly advice - your condition is very serious right now. Don't get too worked up, or it'll affect your health. Then not even God himself could save you."
Chase's eyes widened. "Even you're laughing at me now? Isn't it you two who made me like this?"
"We..."
Jessa was about to break down, too. In the Greer family, he ruled with an iron fist. She almost never talked back to him. And back then, it was because of her relationship with Levi that they got a lot of money.
"Get lost, all of you! Stop being an eyesore!" Chase pushed her.
