Chapter 3
Garrett’s words hit me like a sledgehammer.
My head filled with a piercing ringing sound, my ears buzzing continuously until I couldn’t hear anything clearly anymore.
I felt my body sinking endlessly, falling into an icy abyss.
In my final moments of consciousness, there was the chaotic sound of medical staff desperately trying to save me.
And Rylee’s confident laughter on the other end of the phone: “Juniper, you bitch, you can’t win against me. When you’re dead. I’ll take everything you have!”
“And I guarantee–your bastard might be joining you soon…”
A heavy metallic taste suddenly filled my throat.
In my ears, I seemed to hear my daughter’s weak crying.
She seemed to be begging me not to abandon her, crying for me to stay alive.
Warm tears slid from the corners of my eyes as I struggled to reach out, wanting to hold the baby I’d never gotten to embrace.
But no matter how hard I tried, that small distance became unreachable.
In my delirium, the cold scalpel cut through my skin.
Even though I was unconscious, the pain still made me shudder.
The sharp blade came down again, and desperate whimpers escaped my throat. My survival instincts made me fight to open my eyes.
The doctor barked:
“Hold her down!”
I passed out from the pain.
The twice–opened incision, stimulated and bleeding continuously, made the surgery last all night.
By the time most of my blood had been replaced, the life monitors finally stabilized.
On the critical condition notice, the family signature line remained blank.
Garrett never showed up.
When I regained consciousness, I’d been moved to a monitoring room.
In the empty room, there was no sound except my shallow breathing.
For three whole days, Garrett didn’t appear.
Only Rylee sent a video from the auction venue,
To appease her, Garrett didn’t hesitate to use all the company’s cash flow, bidding one hundred million for the only pink diamond in the auction
house.
She and Garrett held hands and kissed brazenly on stage. The smugness and pride were practically overflowing from her eyes.
[As you can see, love isn’t “Haven’t I been good enough to you?“]

Chapter 3
[Love is bold, daring, and something you don’t have a drop of. Oh, what a pathetic creature you are.]
My eyes felt completely dry.
Garrett’s most common line to me had always been, “Haven’t I been good enough to you?”
Like a discarded piece of junk, I lay alone in the hospital, fighting to stay alive for my daughter’s sake.
Garrett kept his word–when he said he’d wait for me to come crawling back, he wasn’t kidding.
The day after I was moved to a regular room, the nurse placed the NICU billing statement in front of me.
Seeing my pale lips drained of all color, she looked sympathetic.
But without continued medication, my daughter would also be in mortal danger.
“Mrs. Ashford, the NICU already broke protocol and covered one day of medication, but this pressure shouldn’t fall on the doctors. You understand, right?”
