Chapter 543
Oliver never imagined that his carefully crafted lines would instantly make Molly think of those other women.
Now, they sat separately on the living room sofa, each silent.
Molly had wanted to leave, but Oliver's words - "if I'm going to die, I need to die knowing why" - made her stay.
But after that sentence, neither of them spoke.
Oliver rubbed his face, kneading his handsome features like dough, sighing repeatedly, but saying nothing.
Meanwhile, Molly lay back on the other end of the sofa, calmly watching the projection in front of her.
An animated movie played on the screen.
Childish yet eye-catching.
"Molly." After a long while, Oliver finally spoke.
Molly reacted immediately, but didn't turn her head, only glancing over with her eyes. "Go ahead."
"Why do you say we're not right for each other?" Oliver finally asked the question that had been bothering him for so long.
As his words fell, the room became so quiet you could hear their heartbeats clearly.
Oliver bit his lip, staring intently at Molly, hoping for her answer.
But Molly frowned the moment she heard the question.
She couldn't understand why Oliver would ask such a stupid question.
There were so many things that made them incompatible.
Family background, education, life experience... everything.
Three years ago, Molly would never have imagined being with Oliver.
They were like parallel lines that would never intersect, each living their separate lives.
While Molly struggled to make ends meet, Oliver was throwing money around in bars - there might even be nights when "all drinks on Mr. Russell" happened.
They seemed impossible to ever cross paths.
Everything changed because of Alice's appearance.
As Alice rebelled, Molly gradually appeared before the Russell family.
"Molly?" Seeing that Molly still hadn't answered, Oliver called out again nervously.
Molly snapped out of her memories.
She turned her head to face Oliver.
But the living room lighting was dim, and she couldn't really see where Oliver was, only using the flickering projection light to confirm his position.
"You think we're a good match?" she asked with a laugh, though it carried mockery.
Oliver caught it, frowned, but ignored the emotion and nodded seriously. "Of course we are. Look, we like the same things, and you..."
Before answering this question, Oliver had been completely confident.
He'd always believed no one was better suited for Molly than him. He was Molly's first man, wealthy with good looks, and his heart and eyes were full of her.
But once he started speaking, his confidence faltered.
His mind went blank.
At that moment, Oliver suddenly realized he didn't actually know what Molly liked.
Hearing Oliver's response, Molly smiled. "See, you can't even say it yourself."
Oliver's gaze pierced through the dim light to the smile on Molly's face, and his heart suddenly ached.
"Oliver, you like Fioronia foie gras, pasta made from hard red winter wheat, Atlantic bluefin tuna..."
Molly began listing the foods Oliver loved and ate regularly.
With each item, Oliver's heart clenched.
"To you, these are just ordinary things, but before I met you, I'd never even heard of them, let alone eaten them." Molly said, smiling. "We're just not from the same world."
Hearing this conclusion, Oliver frowned, finding it hard to understand. He couldn't help interrupting. "What do you mean not from the same world? Are you not from Earth? Am I not from Earth? Are you not a three-dimensional being or am I not a three-dimensional being!"
His emotions grew more intense.
His leg hadn't fully recovered, but he quickly used his hands to move his body, rapidly approaching Molly.
The dark space gave him great advantage.
Molly didn't notice Oliver moving quickly across the sofa.
By the time she sensed someone approaching, there was nowhere to hide.
Oliver grabbed her hand and placed it on his chest, demanding, "You and I can touch each other, so how can you say we're not from the same world?"
Feeling the chest muscles under her palm, Molly instinctively squeezed.
Oliver immediately moaned.
Molly quickly opened her hand. "Don't do that!"
She swore she'd only squeezed instinctively, nothing more.
Oliver exhaled through his nose, bit his teeth, ignored his body's reaction, and continued, "You're wrong. We are from the same world."
Molly immediately tried to pull her hand back, couldn't, then used her other hand to push him. "Stop twisting my words. You know that's not what I meant!"
How could Oliver not know? But he was playing dumb. "Then what did you mean?"
He raised his hand and caught Molly's other hand too.
"I'm talking about family background! Social status! Education! Life experience!" Molly said through gritted teeth.
Oliver frowned. "So what? Does everyone need to be perfectly matched? Rich families might need that, but what does that have to do with me?"
Hearing his innocent words, Molly's anger flared. "Fine! Then go tell Mrs. Arabella Russell right now that you want to marry me! Go ahead!"
She spoke righteously, certain Oliver wouldn't dare.
"Okay." But Oliver immediately agreed.
He even let go of Molly and turned to feel around in the dark for his crutch.
"Wait, you're really going?" Molly was shocked by his move and quickly grabbed the crutch first, hugging it to her chest.
Oliver glanced at the crutch in her arms, then at her.
Molly's face flickered in the projection's light.
"Yes, I'm going. That's the only way you'll believe me." Oliver said firmly.
But Molly shook her head. "No, even if you do that, I still won't believe you."
Hearing this, Oliver felt his whole body go cold. The heat that had just risen instantly dropped, as if someone had poured ice water over him.
"Why?" He felt his body trembling.
"We're not compatible. This isn't about trust at all." Molly's voice was flat.
Hearing "not compatible" again, Oliver felt irritated. "What about Brady then? Is he right for you?"
