Chapter 118: Do Not Abort the Child
In the afternoon, James rushed back to Luxe Haven, dusty from the journey.
He hadn't slept all night, and had spent six or seven hours driving back and forth this morning. He was exhausted.
Opening the door and not seeing Mia downstairs, he asked the housekeeper, "Where's Mia?"
"Mrs. Smith went to the marriage registry office early this morning and hasn't come back yet."
The housekeeper knew that Mia was going to get the divorce certificate today.
She sneaked a glance at James.
James didn't go?
Hearing this, James tiredly rubbed his temples, walked to the sofa and sat down, took out his phone to call Mia.
When he pulled out his phone, he found it had died.
He asked the housekeeper to bring him a charger, plugged it in, and turned it on.
Among a pile of messages, he went straight to Mia's WhatsApp and opened it: James, you forced me to do this.
Seeing this message, his headache got worse.
Holding his head, he dialed Mia's number.
The call wasn't answered right away, and the wait felt especially long.
James felt a bit worried. Ignoring his physical exhaustion, he got up from the sofa and headed out, ready to go to the marriage registry office to find her.
Just as he reached the entrance, the call connected.
James immediately asked nervously, "Mia, where are you? I'll come find you."
On the other end, Mia's mind was still completely blank. It took her a while to process what James was saying.
She was about to speak.
A young nurse came out of the operating room and called to Mia, who was standing dazed at the door, "Ms. Wilson, the surgery is ready. You can come in now."
James, who had just changed his shoes, heard "surgery" and his face went pale with shock.
His voice trembled uncontrollably as he pressed his throat and asked, "Mia, what are you doing?"
James, you forced me to do this!
The WhatsApp message he'd just seen flashed through James's mind.
His heart instantly jumped to his throat.
No, it can't be. Mia wouldn't be that extreme!
Mia held the phone, her hand gently resting on her lower abdomen.
She was completely lost.
What was she doing?
She was going to abort the baby...
"Abort the baby."
The words came out so softly they were almost inaudible.
The moment she said it, tears rolled uncontrollably from Mia's eyes.
When James heard "abort the baby," his mind went blank for a moment. Almost instinctively, he shouted desperately into the phone, "Mia, don't!"
"Don't, don't get rid of our baby! I'll divorce, I'll divorce, okay? I'll go get divorced right now..."
Before he could finish, the little bit of charge ran out and the call automatically disconnected.
James was devastated.
He stumbled back to the living room like a madman, hands shaking as he reached for the charger to charge it again.
He tried several times but couldn't get the plug in.
The housekeeper, already shocked by the conversation, quickly stepped forward to help him.
The phone was plugged in again and turned on.
James called again, but no one answered.
At that moment, James felt a bone-chilling cold surge up from his feet.
All the blood in his body froze completely in that instant!
"Mr. Smith..."
The housekeeper stood to the side, looking at James with his bloodshot eyes.
At this moment, he looked exactly like a wounded beast.
In pain and sorrow.
Before she could finish her thought, James had already turned and rushed out.
Like a gust of wind sweeping past.
Cutting off the housekeeper's unfinished words.
The housekeeper stood there. She wanted to tell James that Mia would never abort the baby! There must be some misunderstanding!
Maybe some women would abort when deciding to divorce, not wanting the child to become a burden in their future life.
But Mia would never do that.
She loved the baby in her belly so much.
And that love came from James.
Because she loved James and was carrying James's baby, she cherished it even more, loved it even more.
How could she bear to abort the baby just because James wouldn't divorce!
...
James's eyes were red, his vision blurring several times.
He floored the gas pedal, the car speeding all the way to the hospital shown on his phone's location.
He drove while calling Mia's number over and over.
But no one ever answered.
James's heart sank into an endless frozen wasteland.
His grip on the steering wheel tightened more and more!
His speed kept increasing.
All he could think was, no, Mia wouldn't.
She wouldn't be that heartless.
The car ran several red lights along the way, but he didn't care.
Finally, driving at top speed, he reached the hospital. Before the car even stopped properly, he pushed open the door, stumbled out, and headed inside.
Before reaching the hospital entrance, he saw a very familiar figure in the distance.
It was Mia.
He knew her too well. Even from a distance, he recognized her at once.
He watched her walking out, and James quickened his pace, rushing over.
The distance between them closed.
The first thing James saw was Mia's pale, bloodless face, even her lips.
At that moment, his heart felt like someone had squeezed it hard.
He stepped forward, heartbroken.
But just as he was about to approach, his gaze swept to Mia's abdomen.
Her clothes were loose, but he could still clearly see that her slightly rounded belly had become flat.
Their baby... was gone.
[James, I'm definitely getting this divorce.]
[James, to get divorced, I'll do whatever it takes.]
[James, you forced me to do this!]
The harsh words Mia had said to force him to divorce replayed in his mind, one by one.
Stabbing him until his body swayed unsteadily.
Everything before his eyes blurred.
Even Mia's figure became blurry.
He stared at her lower abdomen.
His baby was really gone!
To force him to divorce, she actually went through with it, heartlessly aborting their baby!
James's heart contracted again and again. The pain of losing the child and Mia's heartlessness made it impossible for him to breathe!
He stepped forward and gripped her shoulders with both hands.
He wanted to ask, but it hurt too much—he couldn't get a single word out.
Only complete devastation remained in his eyes.
Looking at Mia, he wanted to see clearly!
See how she could bear to do it!
Why was she so heartless!
How could she be so heartless?
Couldn't they have talked it out?
Couldn't she have waited for him to come back?
He really knew he was wrong. If only she would take one step back, they could go back to how things were.
He would treat her even better than before, make it up to her, spend his whole life seeking her forgiveness.
Even if she didn't want to forgive him, she didn't need to be this extreme!
With this method, she had eliminated her future concerns and cut off the last connection between him and her.
She used her actions to tell him that to divorce and get rid of him, she really would do whatever it takes.
The more he thought about it, the more devastated James became.
The more devastated he became, the more his emotions spiraled out of control.
His eyes completely bloodshot, he raised his hand at Mia in extreme hatred, "Mia, you're crazy!"
