Chapter 8

Penelope's eyes widened with terror.

She was forced to lift her head, her breathing quickening.

Suddenly, the veins on Kelvin's hand bulged, and without warning, he tightened his grip.

Penelope's back slammed against the car door.

She frantically slapped at the hand in front of her, her limbs flailing like a fish out of water, but the hand around her neck kept tightening, slowly cutting off her life.

Penelope's struggle turned to numbness.

Everything in front of her began to blur.

A thought even crossed her mind—maybe dying like this would be a relief.

Two years ago, she had been a cherished princess, with a loving family and a fiancé from a well-matched family.

But now, she had nothing.

Kelvin savored her agony as she faced death.

She never learned, always pushing the limits.

She even dared to question him! To resist!

But in the end, Kelvin found it boring. Letting her die like this seemed too easy.

Penelope should suffer with him, not die easily.

At the last moment, Kelvin released his grip.

A rush of air filled her lungs, and Penelope coughed violently.

She clutched the car door, her face flushed, and for the first time, she snapped at Kelvin.

"Why don't you just kill me?"

"Because I don't want you to die so easily. Remember, you belong to me. Even if you're just a dog, you're my dog."

Kelvin looked back at her, cold and detached.

A phone ringing broke the tension between them.

Lily had heard about today's events and silently cursed Audrey for being an idiot, failing to kill and getting herself in trouble instead.

She used to get $200,000 a year from the Davis family fund.

Now, thanks to Kelvin, that was cut off for a year.

Kelvin answered the call impatiently, his tone far from pleasant. "What is it?"

"Kelvin, how could you drag me into this? And that allowance was approved by your father when he was alive. I've worked hard all these years. Isn't this too much?"

Lily's voice was tearful, full of dissatisfaction and grievance.

Kelvin pressed his temples, his voice cold. "Two years."

"What did you say?"

"Mrs. Andrews, if you're not satisfied, make it three."

Lily immediately realized the seriousness, gasping and holding back her questions.

After all, Kelvin was capable of anything!

Soon, a stern voice came from the other end of the line.

"Kelvin, I don't meddle in these things, but I'm not dead. How dare you speak to your stepmother like that! And what about your new wife?"

Kelvin's attitude softened immediately, becoming respectful.

"Grandfather, I'll explain everything to you in person another day."

Penelope noticed the change in tone and looked over.

It was rare to see someone who could control Kelvin.

Before she could look away, she met Kelvin's gaze.

Kelvin hung up the phone and told the driver, "Head back to The King Manor."

At the mansion.

Penelope went upstairs to bandage her wounds and change her clothes.

When she came back down, Kelvin was sitting on the couch, seemingly asleep.

Penelope walked over to him, her eyes lingering on his neck, a dark thought crossing her mind—if only she could kill him...

But she quickly dismissed the idea.

Kelvin was despicable, but he was also deceived. The real culprit was the one behind all this.

As Penelope turned away, Kelvin opened his eyes, watching her graceful figure and casually tied hair, his eyes filled with unreadable emotions.

The butler hurried over.

He cautiously observed Kelvin's expression. "Mr. Davis, we've found her."

"What!" Kelvin, forgetting his earlier feelings, stood up to leave.

"Where is she?"

"She's at the company. The lady is from the LA psychiatric hospital."

Hearing this, Kelvin turned sharply.

How could it be such a coincidence? Penelope came from there too.

But he couldn't dwell on it now and rushed out.

Penelope sighed in relief.

With Kelvin gone, she felt much lighter.

The butler brought some ointment.

"Mrs. Davis, are you alright? How did you get so badly hurt?"

Penelope waved it off, smiling brightly. "I'm fine, don't worry."

"Alright. Mrs. Davis, if you need anything, please let me know."

The butler liked Penelope, but something always felt off about her interactions with Kelvin.

Penelope reached into her pocket, finding it empty.

Her small pouch, always with her, was missing.

It contained calming herbs, not valuable but comforting.

Penelope called the butler back.

"I do need a favor. Do you know how to make money? I want to buy some herbs."

The butler was stunned, looking at her in disbelief.

Penelope knew he might not believe her.

Who would think Kelvin's wife could be so broke?

She smiled and shook her head. "Never mind, just asking. I'll go upstairs."

As she headed up, she spotted her pouch on the table.

Puzzled, she picked it up and put it away.

The butler couldn't help but speak up. "Mrs. Davis, Mr. Davis hasn't been sleeping well. If you have time, could you look after him?"

Penelope nodded, looking at her pouch, sighing.

Kelvin did seem sleep-deprived lately.

It wasn't that she wanted to help, but when Kelvin went crazy, she was the one who got hurt.

Still, Penelope couldn't help but recall earlier. Was Kelvin looking for his lover?

At the company.

Kelvin hurried from the car, striding upstairs.

He opened the conference room door to see a striking woman in a futuristic outfit by the window.

The moment she saw Kelvin, a flash of greed crossed her eyes, but she quickly feigned innocence.

Kelvin looked at his assistant. "Are you sure?"

His tone was cold, tinged with disappointment. This woman felt different.

Though he couldn't see clearly then, he remembered the woman had a faint, unique scent, not heavy perfume.

The assistant gestured outside, and soon a chubby middle-aged man was shoved in.

"Mr. Davis, I didn't know she was yours! I was just tempted and drugged her, hoping for a night. But she ran away!"

Kelvin found the noise irritating, sensing something was off.

This woman didn't have that same feeling.

The assistant whispered, "She's Fiona Wright, the woman who entered the room that night."
