Chapter 14

Kelvin finished his meal and looked up, his words brief, "Talk."

"I want my own career, Kelvin. I want to be a great actress, but those directors are so stuck-up. They used to give me a hard time, always saying I wasn't good enough. But things are different now."

Fiona gazed at Kelvin with hopeful eyes.

"Mr. Davis, now that I have you, they won't dare to mess with me anymore. I want to keep chasing this dream. Can I?"

Kelvin thought for a moment. His company did have a division for entertainment and media.

Since Fiona had made the request, he naturally wanted to fulfill it.

Maybe her working would reveal a side of her he hadn't seen before.

Perhaps they could even rekindle the feelings from that night.

At that moment, Penelope came down the stairs.

She didn't look well, with a long gash on her back, walking cautiously.

Kelvin glanced at her and then looked away.

Penelope had heard the conversation. She couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness. She once had a bright future ahead of her.

But now, she was in this state, worrying about money every day.

Meanwhile, Fiona could easily rely on Kelvin and might make a name for herself in the entertainment industry.

Kelvin's gaze fell on Penelope's back. After a moment, he spoke.

"Penelope, stay with the company. I don't keep idle people here."

"Okay."

"What are you standing there for? Pour her some water."

Kelvin's fingers tapped lightly on the table, his eyes showing an unreadable emotion.

Penelope took a deep breath, suppressing her emotions, and went to pour water.

Fiona, having just gotten what she wanted, noticed Kelvin's current mood and kept quiet.

As soon as Kelvin left, Fiona dropped her obedient act.

She propped her head on her hand, looking at Penelope. "That was just a small lesson, Penelope. Sooner or later, I'll see you kneeling at my feet, begging for mercy."

Penelope put down the water jug, not bothering to respond.

Fiona, feeling ignored, slammed the table and stood up.

"Penelope! I'm warning you, you'd better divorce Kelvin soon, or I'll come here every day!"

Penelope looked at her as if she were a fool.

"It's not that I don't want to divorce, Fiona. You should talk to Kelvin. If you can really get him to let me go, I'll thank you."

"You... Penelope, you won't be smug for long!"

Fiona sneered, then seemed to think of something and smiled.

"Just wait. Mr. Davis cares so much about me. You're done for."

Penelope rolled her eyes and decided to walk to the company.

Once outside the villa, the oppressive feeling finally lifted.

Penelope looked at the surrounding scenery and the littered bottles, thinking she might as well pick some up.

But after a few steps, she felt like someone was watching her.

Sure enough, as she turned a corner, she saw a man ahead. She wanted to avoid him and leave.

Nathan immediately grabbed her hand. "Penelope."

He saw the bottles she was holding and felt a pang of sympathy.

How had Penelope ended up like this?

What had happened to the Cooper family to make Penelope start picking up trash?

Both times he'd seen her recently, she looked equally disheveled.

Penelope looked at him, her heart aching slightly, her voice turning cold.

"Nathan, I thought I made it clear yesterday. There's no chance for us. Can you stop bothering me?"

"Why is it like this, Penelope? You can't just shut me out like that."

Nathan wanted to argue, but Penelope glanced at the time.

"I don't have time for this, Nathan. Let go!"

Nathan rarely saw this side of Penelope.

He was about to say something when his phone vibrated. It was his assistant calling.

This deal was crucial, determining whether his company could get new investments.

"Penelope, give me your address. I'll come find you, okay?"

Penelope didn't waste words, her cold gaze falling on him, her voice calm but her words cutting deep.

"Nathan, stop bothering me. I'd rather have never met you. Don't block my way."

With that, she walked past him and left.

Nathan's hand paused, his assistant still on the line, asking for details.

Nathan tightened his grip on the phone.

"Find out what Penelope has been through these past two years, as quickly as possible."

Once Nathan drove away, Penelope emerged from around the corner.

Her eyes showed no emotion. She looked down at her outfit and the bag in her hand, pushing all thoughts aside.

At least the trash would get her thirty dollars.

Penelope arrived at the company just in time. As soon as she entered, Ryan pulled her aside.

"You're finally here. I've been waiting forever. Mr. Davis wants to see you."

Penelope instinctively resisted but couldn't refuse, so she walked over.

She knocked on the door, but no one answered.

Penelope had to wait at the door, listening to people passing by talking about jewelry.

She thought of Nathan.

Nathan's family was in the jewelry business.

The door opened.

Kelvin stood there, his expression calm, stepping aside to let Penelope in.

Due to her back injury, Penelope couldn't sit and had to stand, waiting for him to speak.

"I remember you studied jewelry design in college?"

Kelvin's words felt like needles in Penelope's heart.

"It doesn't matter." She hadn't graduated, having been taken to a mental hospital by Kelvin.

Back then, she was the best in her class.

Her work had won multiple awards and was displayed in the school's hall, serving as a model for many students.

But all that glory ended two years ago.

"Do you hate me?" Kelvin closed the file in his hand, his eyes locking onto Penelope.

Penelope shook her head lightly. She once sought glory; now she sought the truth.

Kelvin didn't press further. He called out, "Come in."

The door opened casually.

A charming man walked in, raising an eyebrow at Penelope in greeting, then casually approached Kelvin.

"Why did you call me back from Europe? Just to start a jewelry brand?"

"Yes, and you'll also oversee the entertainment division."

Kelvin's attitude was unusually friendly, and the two seemed to get along well.

Penelope looked at him, her mind automatically recalling the man's information.

Timothy Foster.

He was the vice president of Davis Group and Kelvin's best friend.

"Kelvin, I always say I'm like a busy servant, but you can't really treat me like one. I just got things settled over there, and now you want me back to handle new projects."

"I trust you. Name your price."

"Well, I guess that's fine. But why suddenly have me take over entertainment? It's a complicated field. I don't want to be criticized online."

Timothy was puzzled, his gaze falling on Penelope. "Is it for your lovely wife?"

"It's not her."

Kelvin briefly explained the situation.
