Chapter 50: Curious
Not long after, Kenn walked past us and followed the girl out of the store. I did not waste any time. I immediately jogged over to the cashier and paid for the novel I had chosen earlier.
Luckily, the place was quiet, so I did not have to wait long to finish the payment.
Every so often, I glanced outside, making sure Kenn was still within my line of sight in the distance.
“Sorry, could you go a bit faster?” I urged.
“Alright. Here’s your change,” the cashier replied.
“Thank you.”
Once again, I grabbed Kevan’s hand and pulled him to run outside to chase after Kenn.
Kevan looked at me in confusion. “Are you following someone, Frel?”
“Ah, yes. I’ll explain everything later,” I answered briefly while continuing to quicken my pace.
In a small restaurant on the ground floor of the mall, I looked for a strategic seat to spy on that arrogant guy, Kenn.
The restaurant was divided into two areas. The indoor section and the outdoor section, separated only by a transparent window as a partition. From my position, I could see Kenn sitting in the outdoor area in the second row. His eyes remained alert, observing the atmosphere inside through the window to his left.
I scoffed silently. Smart of him to choose to sit outside to avoid the risk of being seen.
However, a new problem arose. If he was outside, where should I sit? All the seats in the outdoor area were already fully occupied.
“Why did you stop? You want to eat here, right?” Kevan frowned in confusion while reaching for my hand. “Come on.”
“Wait. Let’s eat over there instead.” I pointed to a seat in the very back row that had just been vacated by another customer.
I let out a sigh of relief. How lucky, I got a very safe seat, right behind a chubby man wearing a floral-patterned shirt.
A waiter approached our table while carrying a menu.
“One burger and carrot juice, sir,” I said softly. It felt like I needed to sharpen my eyesight with carrot juice so I could spy on Kenn more clearly. “What would you like to order?”
“I’ll have the same, but change the drink to iced tea,” Kevan said.
“Alright, please wait a moment,” the waiter said after noting our order.
“It’s unusual for you not to order rice, Frel,” Kevan teased.
“I’m already quite full after eating popcorn at the cinema earlier,” I replied while peeking from behind the shoulder of the man in front of me.
“Are you following the guy in front of us?”
“What do you mean?” I had not fully processed the direction of Kevan’s question.
Kevan shrugged. “It seems like you’ve been paying attention to the guy sitting in the second row from the front this whole time.”
I scratched my head even though it did not itch at all. Had Kevan not realized who that guy was? Should I tell him now?
“If you don’t want to talk about it, that’s fine,” he said calmly. “I’m not forcing you.”
“That’s not it,” I protested quickly. “Alright, I’ll tell you now.”
I swallowed, then began to speak in a low voice, almost a whisper. “He’s Kenn, my archenemy in class. Basically, I really hate him. That guy is arrogant, conceited, harsh, and annoying when he talks. No matter what, whenever he’s around, I always get emotional. He always embarrasses me and makes me angry. I truly hate him.” I paused to take a breath. “But I’m also very curious, because it seems like he’s hiding something. I’m sure this time I can get back at him.”
I looked at Kevan in confusion. After hearing my long explanation about my grudge against Kenn, he did not respond at all. Instead, he fell silent, took a brief breath, then turned his face away from me.
“Look, Kenn is about to leave,” I said in panic as I stood up. “I have to chase after him.”
However, suddenly Kevan grabbed my hand, making me stop again with a furrowed brow.
“Wait, Frel,” he said gently. “Our order has already arrived.”
He released his grip and gave a small smile. “Besides, it’s already quite late. I’m afraid your grandmother and grandfather will be worried.”
I glanced at my watch. The time already showed ten past five. Kevan was right, it really was too late.
I let out a long sigh.
Damn it.
Just you wait, Kenn. I’ll get my revenge tomorrow.
