Chapter 47: Almost Getting Closer
Kevan’s hands carried a bundle containing two popcorns, two drinks, and several chocolate bars. It should be noted that the bundle he carried was meant to be eaten only while watching a movie inside the theater. I was the one who asked for it. As for outside, I had already prepared one extra popcorn as a snack.
“Are you sure that’s enough?” I asked while glancing at the bundle in his hands.
Kevan smiled faintly. “If it’s not, you’ll definitely tell me to buy more.”
I let out a small laugh. “You really know me by now.”
My hand slipped into the popcorn box I was holding, then I put three kernels into my mouth at once.
“Slow down,” Kevan warned. “You’ll choke.”
“Relax,” I replied casually. “I’m experienced.”
Sometimes my mind ordered me to do reckless things for Kevan. Like now. I took a single popcorn and lifted it toward his face.
“Want some?”
He looked at my hand with a confused expression. “What?”
“Eat,” I said while gently moving the popcorn. “Open your mouth.”
“Are you serious?”
I nodded firmly. “I am.”
For a few seconds he still hesitated, then finally opened his mouth while looking at me with a soft gaze.
I immediately fed him with enthusiasm. A bright smile spread across my face just like that.
“Is it good?” I asked.
Kevan chewed for a moment, then nodded. “Better than it should be.”
“That’s because I was the one feeding you,” I said spontaneously.
He let out a small laugh. “So confident.”
I noticed that since earlier, several girls around us had been secretly watching us. I did it on purpose, so they would feel jealous and get carried away by seeing how close we were.
The next date Kevan meant was watching a movie at the cinema, specifically inside a mall. While waiting for the movie to start, we sat on a long bench without a backrest.
A few seconds passed in silence. My thoughts suddenly returned to last night’s dinner.
Do I need to apologize?
I bit my lower lip while glancing at Kevan.
“Kevan, about last night, I’m sorry,” I said softly.
He turned to me with a confused expression. “Sorry? For what?”
“About me having no shame because I ate too much in front of you. I even asked for an extra portion. You must have been really embarrassed. I—”
“I never thought that,” Kevan cut in. His voice sounded incredibly pleasant to my ears. “You never embarrassed me, Frel. I like girls like you. Cheerful, genuine, and also … funny.” Kevan looked at me, then chuckled softly.
My breath stopped instantly. I hoped my heart did not stop along with it. That would not be funny at all.
Kevan rested both elbows on his thighs, then lowered his head with a smile. A few seconds later, he straightened up and turned fully toward me.
I froze when I realized his face was now so close to mine. My body tensed. His eyes looked beautiful and calm. His nose was sharp, his lips thin. Oh God, please do not let me lose control.
“Frel,” he said gently.
“Yes?”
“Until now, even I can’t believe I could change this quickly.”
“You didn’t expect it?” I asked in a voice that was almost gone. I also didn’t expect your face to be this close.
“Do you know because of whom?” he continued.
I stared at him wide-eyed and slowly shook my head. Why was his face getting even closer?
“It’s all because.…”
“Because who?” I asked softly, my eyes blinking with hope.
Say it’s because of me, Kevan. Please.
I held my breath for a moment, hoping the sound of my pounding heart and the rush of my breathing would not interfere with my hearing as Kevan spoke.
“It’s because….”
“Bang!”
Kevan and I both jumped reflexively.
Damn it!
Why were those two annoying creatures here? They really had no sense of place.
“Hahahahaha!” Alvin and Ari burst out laughing.
“Get a room, get a room. This is a public place,” Alvin shouted loudly from behind us.
Before I could react, his hand had already slipped between Kevan and me, pushing us apart just like that until we were forced to shift to the sides. I hissed in irritation and shot him a sharp glare. Instead of being intimidated, Alvin casually stepped forward and sat right between us.
He turned to me with an infuriating smile. “Going to watch a movie?”
I immediately turned my face away, choosing not to respond. Truly an annoyance.
Ari giggled when he saw my reaction. Because the bench only fit three people, he had no choice but to stand right in front of us.
“Kevan, what were you actually about to do earlier? You were just talking, but your face got that close,” he teased while wiggling his eyebrows.
“Yeah, just admit it. Good thing we came. If not, you two might’ve gotten beaten up by people,” Alvin added.
Crazy. How could his mouth be that loud? Did he even realize where he was?
Beaten up by people?
Did we look like pickpockets or something?
But when I remembered Kevan’s face earlier, moving closer and closer, my thoughts suddenly drifted.
Could it be….
Why did my cheeks suddenly feel hot? What was I even thinking?
“That’s weird. Why are your cheeks so red, Frel?”
I flinched and panicked. Alvin was truly unbearable.
Without meaning to, my gaze met Kevan’s eyes. That strange sensation came rushing back, making the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. But this time it felt different. Warm and pleasant.
Suddenly, Kevan stood up. In a matter of seconds, Alvin’s and Ari’s necks were already trapped under his arms.
“What were you saying just now?” he said coldly. “Try saying it one more time if you dare.”
“Ouch, my neck hurts!” Ari shouted in panic.
Kevan did not care. His grip tightened even more, making both of them cry out in pain.
“Mercy, Kevan. It hurts,” Alvin groaned, his face turning red as he endured the pain.
I could not hold back my laughter. Watching the two of them suffer felt incredibly satisfying.
Several people began glancing in our direction with mixed expressions. Some giggled, some looked annoyed, and one mother even covered her child’s eyes while shooting us a sharp look.
Kevan only released his hold when an announcement echoed throughout the room.
“Attention, please. The movie screening will begin shortly. Theater three is now open. Audience members who already have tickets are kindly requested to enter the theater.”
I let out a long breath.
Finally.
