Chapter 41: Hey, Kevan

When I decided to walk alone along the school corridor, my gaze caught three male students walking not far ahead of me.

Two of them were at the front. One of them seemed excitedly telling a story about something I did not really pay attention to. My ears only caught a few words like ball and foul, accompanied by body language that I thought was excessive. They were Ari and Alvin.

One other student walked slightly behind them, taking a phone call. His left hand was tucked into his pants pocket, his head slightly lowered.

That was Kevan.

A good opportunity.

I quickened my pace to catch up to him. As soon as he ended the call, I boldly reached out and gently tugged the back of his uniform. Kevan stopped and turned toward me.

“Hey, Kevan.” I greeted him softly while giving a small wave, then placed my index finger in front of my lips before pointing toward the two students still walking ahead.

Kevan immediately understood. He smiled in amusement and shook his head lightly. Meanwhile, Ari and Alvin kept walking without noticing anything, still accompanied by Alvin’s endless chatter.

“I want to talk,” I said.

Kevan looked at me with curiosity.

“But not here,” I continued.

I gently pulled his hand, leading him to a quieter area. I did not want anyone eavesdropping. Along the corridor we passed through, I could feel many pairs of eyes looking in my direction. Some female students even looked as if they were ready to pounce at any moment.

“I think it’s quiet enough here, Frel.”

I flinched and froze for a moment when I heard his voice.

Oh God. I had gotten carried away enjoying the moment of holding his hand. I tapped my own forehead. Stupid.

I immediately turned to face Kevan. “Yes. It’s quiet here,” I said with a small chuckle, scratching the back of my neck that was not itchy at all.

Kevan looked at me gently. “And then?”

“And then?” I echoed without realizing it.

He smiled faintly. “Yes. What did you want to talk about earlier?”

“Earlier?” I tried to recall the reason why I wanted to talk to him.

Oh God. Only now did I remember.

There was something I wanted to ask him. I cleared my throat softly while giving an awkward smile. Without realizing it, my body began to sway slowly from side to side. My mind had already drifted, imagining things with no clear direction.

“Frel, are you okay?”

Damn.

So Kevan had seen all my ridiculous behavior just now?

Reflexively, I lifted my head and looked at Kevan, who was now frowning in confusion.

“No, I’m fine,” I answered nervously.

“Have you remembered what you wanted to talk about?” he asked. On his face appeared a faint, sweet smile, as if he were deliberately holding it back.

I did not answer right away. I was still too busy enjoying that restrained smile. I was sure that if I could duplicate myself, I would see another version of me with a foolish expression, openly admiring and captivated by Kevan’s good looks.

If I thought about it, this was not the first time I had worn such an expression when meeting a handsome man. But I had to admit, this was the first time I felt something different. Not just because of his face, but there was something else about Kevan that made me want to keep looking at him.

I liked his eyes.

Those eyes were like a magnet, as if they held some kind of magic that forced me to keep looking at them. Every time I met his gaze, a sense of comfort filled my chest, mixed with something I could not quite explain, perhaps even a question.

Ah, forget it.

A few moments later, I nodded. “Yes. I remember now,” I finally said with a wide grin.

I intended to ask my question, even though doubt crept in. What if Kevan’s answer was not what I hoped for? But if I did not ask now, when else would I ever know?

My head truly felt dizzy.

“By the way, do you still remember our agreement during the MOS event on the field back then?”

I looked at Kevan hopefully while holding my breath.

Remember. Please say you remember.

“What agreement?” he said casually.

Crushed. My hope vanished.

“That … back when Alvin punished me to ask you—” I spontaneously turned around, my back facing him.

I felt extremely nervous. I tried to regulate my breathing slowly.

Inhale. Exhale. Inhale again. Exhale.

Okay. I had to be brave.

I turned back to face Kevan, but the doubt surfaced once more.

“I suddenly don’t know what to say. Don’t forget, okay?” I pleaded while clasping my hands anxiously.

Kevan looked like he was trying to remember. But seeing his face still deep in thought, I could only let out a resigned sigh.

Was I the only one who wanted it? Really? How pathetic.

Like it or not, I had to remind him myself.

“Enough, don’t force it. I’ll just continue.”

“Are you sure?” Kevan bent down slightly, his face now level with mine.

My heart felt like it stopped.

I nodded stiffly. My tongue felt dry.

Kevan smiled calmly. “Alright. I’m listening.”

“Yes, but please don’t put your face that close,” I whispered, feeling my heart pound far too fast.

A few seconds later, Kevan finally pulled his face back.

I let out a breath of relief. Thank goodness my heart did not leap out of my chest.

“I want to remind you about the weekend we already agreed on. About that promise.”

“What promise?”

I stared at him. Again? He forgot again?

The hint was already clear enough, wasn’t it?

“The promise that this weekend we will—”

“Go on a date,” Kevan cut in quickly with a wide grin.

I fell silent, then gaped in disbelief. “So you were messing with me this whole time?”

Kevan chuckled softly.

“Sorry. I couldn’t help it, seeing your reactions, Frel. What else could I do?” he said while touching the tip of my nose. His smile looked incredibly sweet.

I froze, staring blankly without a sound.

A few seconds later, I blinked repeatedly. A shy smile appeared on my face, and I was sure my cheeks had already turned red.

Could this scene be replayed just once more?

Kevan laughed softly at my reaction. “Alright then. Get ready. I’ll pick you up at seven in the evening,” he said while ruffling my hair.

And just like that, I froze.

Ah, it felt so happy.
