Chapter 43 Chapter 43

ALPHA XANDER'S POV
"You know, you can just tell me and save yourself the trouble because I'm going to figure it out anyways." Donovan simply doesn't know when to let things go and give up. I've realized that in the past two hours. We would be talking about the pack when out of the blue he would bring the topic of the witch back up. I've tried everything possible to get him to let it go, but he pretends to be deaf. Maybe I should throw him out of my office to have a moment of peace.
"I won't, just fucking give up." I growled out in annoyance. I was feeling aggravated after being here for so long and not knowing how Adriana is doing. Daciana went up to see her a few minutes ago, I was informed. It is one of the reasons I'm still entertaining Donovan's nosiness. Him being here and trying to know something that was none of his business kept him away from her and until I am sure she is safe around him, I wouldn't want him anywhere near her.
"No need to get all angry. I'm only trying to help, but as usual you have to be the mighty Xander, the oh, all-knowing." He finished with an exaggerated roll of his eyes. I didn't bother looking at him, my eyes looking over his shoulder waiting for the person that was about to knock to come in. It was just who I wanted to see.
I was probably being a little paranoid, having a security that reported all that happened within Adariana's room is crossing the line in some people's narrative. I wasn't stalking her since I didn't have security cameras installed in the room, and the reports were just to make sure there was nothing suspicious happening.
"Alpha," the best delta I have greeted after he opened the door. He had knocked and Donovan told him to come in, without asking me might I add. "Good day, alpha. Beta." He gave both of us respective nods, then he went back and stood at attention a little behind the chair Donovan was occupying.
Deltas were higher middle ranking lycans or wolves, not as strong as a gamma who might be picked to be the next beta but also not just a middle ranking lycan.
"Is there a problem, Fredrick?" I placed my palms on the table, pushing myself upward a bit as I asked. His gaze didn't waver from the floor as he replied.
"Not exactly a problemn alpha. But the luna-"
"She is not our luna!" Donovan snapped. I didn't correct him, for now. I didn't want the news getting out that I was making her the luna. Not that I have reached a final decision on that.
Me marrying Adriana didn't make her luna automatically and no one knew she was my mate. Since It was common for alpha's to marry someone who isn't their mate or luna and just keep her as a partner. Though mostly when they did find their mates, they more or less discard the first and make their mate the official luna. I'm not doing that to Adriana, it had been my plan at first but not anymore. "Of course, beta." he nodded to Donovan, still keeping his eyes downcast. He then turned to me and said. "The lady left her bed chambers with her grace. As you said, I kept to the shadows so they wouldn't notice me following them." I gave a satisfied nod when he finished. Most deltas, especially those on special assignments like this one mask their scent to avoid being easily detected. It works well too in wars, they never know what's coming for them.
"Where did they go?" I was already mind linking Daciana even before the question was fully out of my mouth. She has blocked me out, of course, there was no surprise there. She is directly defying the order I have her to always inform me of where she is going and especially if it involves Adriana.
"I don't know for certain. To keep away from their eyes, I had to stay at a farther distance." He didn't have to say it, I already knew. Daciana is perceptive and very few things passed her notice. She would notice him if he got too close, he must have realized that.
"Keep up with her. No harm should come to either of them." Daciana thinks she can take care of herself. She has lived for long, but in my eyes she will forever be that little girl I read bedtime stories to.
"Noted, alpha." He bowed again then left the room after I'd dismissed him with a small nod.
Donovan's fury was palpable, he'd managed to keep it in bay when the delta was in here, even if he had something to say, he wouldn't do it in anybody's presence. He was private about the things he wanted to keep private and he knew how to keep professional boundaries. It's why he is good a what he does, be it good or bad.
"Now you're getting reports on where she is." His voice was even when he spoke. His whole demeanor was calm, only a few things showed he was ticked off. Like the flickering of his eyes that showed he was letting his animal side win. "Don't you see there is something majorly wrong with everything that you're doing? You are not making her your luna, but you're parading her around the pack like she is the next fucking queen. What do you think people would say?"
I pinched the bridge between my eyes after he was done with his rant. I don't have the energy to deal with him right now as my main focus is the same woman he is saying these things about.
"What would you do if I made her luna?" I ask, just to hear his thoughts. He isn't the boss of me and I would do whatever I wanted. As long as it wouldn't hurt my pack then his opinion or whoever else doesn't bother me.
Donovan looked up at me, his eyes glinting with disbelief. "You wouldn't dare." I gave him a look that told him just how much I would dare and he laughed. He just burst into laughter like a crazy person. "Don't joke with me Xander. You wouldn't make that weak little bitch your mate. She can't even stand a few of the weak women you have and you want her to lead us?" he shook his head. Like what I was saying wasn't even possible.
I get where he is coming from and if he wasn't so prejudiced, I would have taken his worries into account. Adriana is a wolf, which biologically makes her weaker than pureblood lycans, and she doesn't have a wolf. She is an omega though her father is the alpha, and then a weak one at that since she was without a wolf. Me, naming her luna would make me appear weak. Lycans and wolves took hierarchy very seriously and an alpha isn't meant to have someone weaker by their side.
A luna is supposed to be my equal, she can't be that. These aren't things I haven't already thought about, I didn't want to give my mate up though. I've been wanting to find her for over three centuries, her stature shouldn't matter to me. Except, it does. This is the real world and things like that mattered, a lot more than we think.
"She'llbirth the next lycan king? Don't fucking play with me." Donovan's laughter is cynical. "She isn't even strong enough to birth a normal lycan and you want her to have the next in line." He shook his head. I listened to him, not bothering to correct him or even give an input. If he has already made his mind up about how he thinks things should be, I'm still the king, the leader, so whatever I say is
what will go. "Better wake up from your haze and think like you used to. Your brain seemed to have left since you took her in." he got up and walked toward the door. I almost heaved a sigh of relief when I saw he was finally leaving, but he stopped just when he reached the door and turned. "Better get rid of her before it's too late." With that, he turned and left. Leaving the door wide open.
I stared at the open door in annoyance, my mood wasn't any good after remembering the things I discussed with the witch, and more so now at Donovan's words. I couldn't catch a break.
Daciana's scent reached my nostrils before she came into view. She walked right into the open door, her eyes curious. She knows I never leave the door open when I'm working. It wasn't sound proof and I still heard better than the rest of the people that lived here so it was pointless, I still preferred it that way.
"What are you doing?" she asked, lowering herself into the seat Donovan vacated. She looked relaxed and content as she took the space in, a total contrast to how I'd last seen her in the hospital. I didn't take note of her appearance that much earlier, I wasn't able to focus on anything besides my mate.
"working," though I haven't gone back to the statements of account since Donovan didn't give me a moment of peace. She didn't need to know that. Knowing her, she would go and give him a piece of her mind and I really didn't want to deal with any more issues than
what I have to.
"You said to meet you." She grumbled, annoyed at the reply I'd given her. "When was that?" I couldn't remember asking for her in the past few hours. I knew where she was and what she was doing.
"Earlier. When I was with Adriana." I shook my head. I'd even forgotten. It was almost five in the evening and that was in the morning. "That was more than five hours ago, you're just coming now?" she rolled her eyes then crossed her arms in front of her chest. "What did you want to talk about?" I was about to reply, but she didn't give me a chance. She moved forward in her chair, that damn curious look was back in her eyes as he stared up at me. "And where did you go after you left the hospital?"
