Chapter 28 Chapter 28

ALPHA XANDER'S POV
"Mr. Xander, I'm sorry but I cannot give you any information over the phone, it's imperative that you come to the hospital as soon as possible. Adriana's condition has taken a turn for the worse and we are doing everything we can to help her. I understand that this is a difficult time for you and your family, but I assure you that our team is doing everything we can to help her. Please come to the hospital as soon you can. Time is of the essence."
I felt a sense f dread wash over me as I hung up the phone. Whatever was happening with Adriana, it was bad, terrible even and I had to be there for her.
Daciana turned to me, her solemn eyes filled to the brim with unshed tears, "What's happening? Is Adriana okay?" She asked, her voice shaking.
"I don't know, the doctor wouldn't say anything over the phone. We have to go to the hospital now," I lied, my speech ridden with stutters.
She nodded before taking her phone which I was handing her back. My mind racing with thoughts and worries about Adriana. In my heart, I silently muttered a prayer to the Moon goddess, begging for her to protect Adriana and keep her safe.
Daciana turned to me and asked, "What did the doctor say? Is Adriana okay?" I shook my head, my mind still racing with thoughts and worries. "She wouldn't say anything over the phone. She just told us to come to the hospital right away," I said, my voice filled with concern.
Her face drained of color, the worry looking overtaking her features more. She grabbed my hand and squeezed it tightly, as if seeking comfort and reassurance from me. She was just as worried and scared as I was, and I wished that I could do something to ease her fears. Daciana turned to me and said, "In that case, I'll go to my room and change quickly. I'll meet you here so we can go to the hospital together." She doesn't wait for a reply before she runs out of the room and she collides with Donovan on her way out and furiously curses him before running off.
Donovan enters the room and faces an angry-looking me. Unlike before, Donovan looks happy, and I could sense a sense of triumph in his demeanor. He knew that something was wrong with Adriana and that I was going through a tough time. But instead of showing any empathy, he seemed pleased.
My anger towards him flared up. "What the hell are you doing here, Donovan?" I asked, my voice filled with anger and frustration.
Donovan walked around my room, playing with my emotions. Sensing my mood, a slight smirk almost made it to his mouth though he repressed it.
"You know what, I think I have the solution to this little problem of yours." He waved a hand over my rumpled dressing. "I can help you fix it." His voice didn't sound like he was here with a solution.
Donovan wore a casual outfit that exposed his rock-hard physique. He had on a leather jacket that was unzipped, revealing his toned chest and abs. He paired it with tight fitting pants that accentuated his muscular legs, and a pair of boots that added to his rugged look. His was messy, as if he had just gotten out it added to his carefree and reckless demeanor. He looked like someone who didn't care about his appearance, but in reality, he was very vain and his actions were calculated. His attire was designed to give an impression of someone who was casual and carefree but at the same time, dangerous and powerful.
My anger and suspicion towards him grew with each passing moment, he knew that something was wrong with Adriana and he seemed happy about it. He was enjoying my pain, and he wasn't even trying to hide it. He walked towards the foot of the bed and sat down, staring through the window.
"I heard about her, and I heard everything the doctor said." he said before fishing out a lighter from his pocket. He lighted his cigarette and took a cloudy puff then turned towards me, his expression becoming totally serious.
I stared at him, my eyes cold and hard. "What do you know about Adriana's condition?" I asked, my voice filled with suspicion. He gave me a sly smile, "I might know more than you think, Xander. But, I'll only tell you if you agree to do me a favor."
"I'm not ready for your jokes or mischief, this is a very serious situation." He took another drag of his smoke and puffed it out. I fisted my hands to stop myself from acting on what was on my mind and pummeling him until he was a bloody mess on the bed.
"I know more about your little mate than you do. This..." he held his smoke out to me. I didn't bother taking it and only just glared at his hand. "This your relationship, I shouldn't even call it that is just shallow. Without depth or anything." His comment made my anger boil over. I couldn't believe the audacity. f him, trying to belittle my feelings for Adriana and my relationship with her.
"Get out of my room, Donovan," I growled, my voice betraying my rage. "You know nothing about my relationship with Adriana, and I don't want to hear anything more from you."
Donovan just laughed, "You're so blinded by your own ego, Xander. You think you know everything, but you don't. I know more about Adriana than you ever will."
I couldn't take it anymore, I lunged at him but he dodged me and left the room.
He was almost at the door but he stopped and turned towards me and said. "You can't help her, the doctor's can't and they are too afraid to tell you that. It's just a few days before she dies and you will regret not allowing me to lend you a hand for the rest of your life."
Donovan's words continued to echo in my mind, and a mixture of fear and dread filled me.
"She'll die if you don't let me help you, and you know I can help." I tried to not let his words get to me and even though I didn't trust him and his intentions, I couldn't shake off the feeling that he was right.
"Donovan, what are you talking about? What do you know about Adriana's condition? I hope you have nothing to do with this, Donovan?" I asked, my menacing.
He shrugged and replied, "I heard what happened, and I wanted to see if there was anything I could do to help." I glared at him, not believing a word he said. I couldn't shake off the feeling that he was somehow involved i Adriana's condition. I knew that I had to be careful around him, and I couldn't let my guard down.
He gave me a sly grin, "I know more than you think, Xander. And I can help you, but you have to listen to me and do as I say."
I glared at him, not trusting a word out of his mouth. "I don't want your help, Donovan. I will find out what's wrong with Adriana on my own. Now, get out of my room," I said, my voice filled with determination.
Donovan's smile faltered, seeing that I wouldn't budge. He shrugged and left the room, but not before throwing a warning "You'll regret this, Xander."
I was left standing there, filled with anger, fear, and determination to find out what happened to Adriana and make things right. I couldn't trust him, and I wouldn't let him play with my emotions any longer. I told him to get out of my room and I'll find out what happened to Adriana on my own and solve the problem myself.
After a few minutes, Daciana came back to my room. She looked fresh and ready, her hair tied back in a ponytail, and she was dressed in comfortable clothes. She saw the troubled look on my face and asked me what was wrong. I couldn't bring myself to tell her about Donovan's visit, I knew it would only add to her worries. Instead, I put on a camisole and walked out of the room, hand in hand with Daciana. We walked down the hallway, and I could feel her eyes on me, but I didn't say a word. She didn't stop there as she sensed that there must have been a bit of an altercation between Donovan and me.
Daciana persisted with her questions, knowing that something was bothering me. She wouldn't let it go. Eventually, I caved in and told her about Donovan's visit and how he had said he knew something about Adriana's condition. She listened to me patiently, and when I finished, she let out a sigh. "Don't mind that fucker, Xander," she said, her voice filled with frustration. "He's always looking for a place to cause trouble. We should be fast though, we cannot keep the doctor waiting" she said before glancing at her wrist watch. It was quarter past nine.
We entered the car and drove to the hospital in silence, both of us lost in our thoughts and worries about Adriana. When we arrived at the hospital, we were greeted by the doctor who had been treating Adriana. She called us into her office and told us that she had tried everything but Adriana wasn't responding to treatment.
"I haven't seen a case like this in all my years of practicing alpha. The other doctors all tried to help but there was nothing we could do, and I'm sorry to say alpha." Her eyes flicked to Daciana who gave her a reassuring nod, her eyes were wary when they turned back to me. I knew what she wanted to say, she knows that I do and that's why she was scared to utter it. "I don't think she'll make it."
A growl almost roped my chest, Daciana seeing that squeezed my hand. I felt only a bit of relief. I gave the doctor a stiff nod meaning for her to go on with her explanation.
"This morning, we ran a few more tests like one of our oldest doctors suggested. She'd started to convulse unfortunately and now...she slipped into a coma alpha." I felt my heart drop as the doctor spoke, and fear gripped me. Tears welled up in Daciana's eyes, the first thing that came to my mind was how these days I've only seen her looking that way.
I rid myself of those thoughts, and more of Adriana's lifeless body and tried to remain calm and composed. I didn't want to show any
weakness in front of Daciana or the doctor.
"What can we do now?" There wasn't much to be done for someone in a coma, but there had to be something! I wouldn't just give up on my mate, just the thought of that and my blood cold.
The expression on the doctors made my heart break further. My face remained impassive though, I didn't know what I was feeling and how it would be if I let it out. "There is nothing we can do right now alpha but wait," she shook her head sadly. "And hopefully it'll have a positive end result." She didn't say it but the look on her face suggested the possibility of that positive result was very slim. "But... that can't be. You have to think of something. You have to do something!" Diaciana shook my arm, she was almost yelling in the doctor's face at this point. I tried to calm her but she shook me off her and started sobbing.
The doctor who now looked terrified after seeing Daciana's reaction swallowed nervously. Daciana was known around the pack as fearless, she was very strong being a pure blood and weakness was something she rarely showed. I understood why the doctor would be scared to say anything more to her right now.
There couldn't be worse news to be said now. I had no idea how to feel about that. Wolves rarely went into coma and you had to have been hurt pretty bad for you to not simply heal. That might have to with Adriana not having a wolf, which in itself was something serious. 2
"Alpha," the doctor started. I shook my head telling her to stop, if she said any more bad news, I wouldn't know how to take it.
