Chapter 27 Fake Feelings
Eden’s Point of View
The tension on the dining table was thick. I could tell right from the first time Dr. Giselle met me that I knew she didn’t like me one bit, and that much was obvious, especially now that she knows a no-level, low-class doctor like me dated two of her sons.
She must be livid.
Furiously so.
But I was so grateful to Theron, he was standing up for, surprisingly, I never expected to progress so much with him, just nearly two days after our wedding.
I guess maybe he isn’t as bad as I thought he would be.
“Giselle, I know you are upset about this, but at the same time, we were at fault.” Dr. Keegan muttered as he explained to his very stubborn wife. “We didn’t tell her we had another son, and we didn’t let them get to know each other before they got married. That doesn’t matter in the moment. Eden must have been startled by that ruffian who was groping her in the resort.”
My eyes widened. Dr. Keegan knew about that? And it seemed like I wasn’t the only one who was surprised; even Theron shifted in his seat.
“Father, how did you find out about that?” He asked curiously, a certain degree of uncertainty was in his eyes, and anger returned to him. “I wanted to handle it on my own.”
Dr. Keegan shook his head.
“Attorney Wilson informed me of the case, and he also sent me some of the evidence you retrieved from the scene.” He explained. “David Gomez has been fined before for sexual harassment and assault, and this time around, I will make sure he doesn’t get away with it for laying his filthy hands on my daughter-in-law.”
My cheeks heated.
“Thank you, Father,” I muttered, pulling some loose strands away from my face. Well, I don’t think living with these people will be so difficult. At least, it feels way better than living at home; my father-in-law likes me, and Theron seems easygoing.
The only problem I might have is his mother, and then there is Thorne; my expression became blank as I realized that.
“I hope you weren’t hurt during the scuffle?” He questioned, his eyes glancing at my arms that were covered in the material of my sweatshirt.
I shook my head almost immediately.
“No, I wasn’t,” I answered. “Thanks to Theron, he was there on time to help me.”
A huge smile spread on Dr. Keegan’s face as he cut through the piece of chicken in front of him.
“I never thought there would be a day that I would say this, but I am very proud of you, son.” My gaze drifted towards Theron, who didn’t have any expression on his face at the moment. “Also, Dr. Eden, I have heard about your outstanding skills from your father.”
My eyebrows shot up. My father?
“He said you did an emergency surgery and saved the life of a twelve-year-old boy, even though you are not a pediatric surgeon.” He nodded his head continuously, impressed. “It must have taken a mastery of precision to achieve that. So, he proposed that you work in our foundation to gain more exposure and knowledge.”
My eyes narrowed. As much as I would be happy to work with and in the Alder Medical Foundation, I knew why my father proposed I work there: to take me away from the family hospital as far as possible. He still intends to make Evangeline the director of that hospital.
“Do you have any objections?” He asked, and I shook my head.
“No, I don’t,” I answered confidently, I shall have a word with my father after this dinner.
“You will be working under Theron; I am sure you know he is the Medical Director of the whole foundation.” He explained, and my eyes shifted back to Theron, who was eating without paying any mind to his father and me. “He would test your level of experience and find a position for you.”
I nodded.
“May I have a word with you, please?” Giselle, Theron’s mother, asked me immediately after dinner, and I nodded hurriedly. She led me out of the dining room and towards the living room. I thought we were about to sit down and discuss when she walked me to another room just after the living room.
This is my chance to make a difference.
“I want to apologize to you,” I started as soon as we were alone. “I didn’t know about Thorne until recently. I know it was a big deal and I ought to mention it, but I assure you, I am not a bad person, and I won’t hurt Theron.”
“What is it you hope to get from Theron?” She asked immediately. “Money? Fame? Power?”
I froze for a while. I can’t believe this is happening.
“You must know that Theron is not a normal boy. I know this because I am his mother. He is a psychopath, probably one of the rarest and the most dangerous ones to ever exist.” She explained, her voice turning dark and deadly. I felt my heart pound against my ribcage. “He doesn’t have feelings or emotions. He doesn’t love you, and he is only trying to use you. I know this because all those sweet talks and gestures he is showing you are all fake.”
“Isn’t it harsh to say he doesn’t have any feelings?” I wondered. “You are his mother, and a medical expert.”
“Well, none of us majored in psychology, or did we?” She sneered, and I quieted. “He was clinically diagnosed as a psychopath, a cold-blooded one, thanks to the close monitoring his father and I gave him, or he would end up a serial killer. You are not safe in this marriage, and you should leave while you can.”
I don’t know if she was looking out for me or saying all these things to scare me.
“And if you are in it for the money, then I will pay you—name your price and it’s yours.” The urgency in her voice cannot be mistaken.
I was about to speak when the door suddenly opened, and Giselle’s eyes widened as she took a step back. Theron entered the room, his eyes narrowed, and his aura like death.
“What are you doing, Mom?” He asked as he neared me, and took my hands gently, pulling me to his side. “Why are you trying so hard to ruin my relationship with my wife?”
She said nothing, but she took a few steps away from him, scared and surprised—it confused me because why was she so scared of her own son?
“I’m sorry this had to happen, Eden.” His eyes fell on mine; they were filled with pain and softness, and for some reason, I felt bad for him. It must have hurt to listen to all the terrible things his mother had to say about him. “Let’s go home, you need to rest, a big day awaits us tomorrow.”
He threw one more glance in the direction of his mother and then led me out of the room wordlessly.
