Chapter 9: Little Thief
Elizabeth's POV:
Oh, someone save me. Last night I had difficulty sleeping because every time I closed my eyes, I saw that driver smirking at me, and I had barely managed to close my eyes when Jaxon walked in and asked me to be ready in the next fifteen minutes.
Where were we going? I had no idea.
This was fucking holidays—it was the time I slept until 9 a.m., but he woke me up at 7. So I quickly freshened up and selected a dress that wouldn't make me look like a lunatic standing next to the great business mogul.
After slipping into a blue gown that stopped below my knee, a pair of black sandals, and light jewelry, I got busy brushing my hair while searching for my purse, only then did I get reminded that I had lost my purse and phone back at the inn.
"Mrs. Sinclair," Alice called from the doorway, and this caused me to frown. What did she just call me? She stepped into the bedroom while smiling at me. "Good morning."
"It's Beth," I corrected, busy brushing my hair while glancing at the clock. I didn't know at what minute Jaxon woke me, so I had no idea if it was already fifteen minutes or not.
"Okay, Beth. You should come have breakfast before leaving for Voltex," she said, and I dropped the brush before walking toward her. Why would I go to Voltex?
Jaxon had made a name in the business world when he launched Voltex, an energy and telecom business back in Canada, and two years ago he opened a branch here in New York, and it quickly made it to the list.
But the question remained: why would I want to be there?
"I don't think you have much time. The ride to Voltex is about 50 minutes, and Master expects you there in less than an hour."
"He left?" My eyes widened. Had I crossed the fifteen minutes and he chose to leave and have me find my way to him just like he did yesterday? And if I had breakfast, then I wouldn't make it there.
"I will leave now, ma'am." I hurried to the door before realization hit me. My steps halted, and I turned to Miss Alice. "I lost my purse last night and have no money. How am I supposed to get there?"
I pouted. Jaxon hadn't even considered that, and why did he even want me there? I smacked my lips. Miss Alice walked toward me while laughing at my question. "Of course there is a car downstairs. I will get the keys."
"I don't know how to drive," I felt embarrassed saying this, but that was the truth. Talon had promised to teach me driving after my college entrance exam, but who would have expected things to be this way?
"Oh... uhm, then I will get you some cash," and to be honest, I felt more embarrassed taking money from Miss Alice, but I had no choice if I wanted to get to Voltex.
After she handed me the money, I took a cab which dropped me in front of Voltex. It was one of the tallest buildings in the country, and there at the front was a big display of the Earth on its globe rotating.
It had everything to do with energy. I walked past the security guards who were dressed in white. The first floor was vast, and there were many workers walking past, dressed in white shirts and black pants or skirts.
I looked out of place, gripped my purse tightly, and walked over to the receptionist. "Hello," I called, but she had her back to me, busy with the coffee machine which was close to her desk.
She finally turned to face me and had a wide smile, walked over and dropped her coffee. "Good morning, Miss. How can I help?"
"Uhm... how do I get to Jaxon's office?"
She raised a brow and chuckled before she took a sip of her coffee. "This is a huge company, sweetheart. Do you know how many Jaxons work here? Be specific—what's his full name and what department?"
She pulled a writing pad, waiting for me to answer. "Jaxon Sinclair," I blurted, and she stared at me for a while, then dropped the pad and bit her lower lip.
"Okay... you mean that Jaxon. Well, here's the thing, sweetheart. You can't see the CEO without an appointment." I could tell she wasn't trying to be offensive with her words, and that was really nice.
"He asked me to meet him here. How about you call him?"
The receptionist laughed. "If I had the CEO's contact, then trust me, I would have already found my way to his bed." She winked at me, and I scowled.
Didn't Camille Sinclair say it would be hard to find another bride for Jaxon? She was so wrong.
"Okay, let's do it this way." She pointed at the waiting lounge. "Go wait over there. The president's assistant left the building for an errand. Once he is back, then you could talk to him instead."
I massaged my temple. What did she mean by wait for his assistant? I wanted to see Jaxon and not his assistant. And I didn't even have my phone with me.
"Fine." I knew there was nothing more I could do, so I walked over to the waiting lounge and picked up one of the magazines and went through it.
While reading, I felt someone watching me. I dropped the magazine and spotted my cousin. She stood there dressed in a white shirt and pencil black skirt.
She glared at me, and I really wished she would ignore me and go about her day, but that would be the last thing Naya Mitchell did. She marched toward me, hands crossed across her chest as she snorted, "Why are you here, Elizabeth?" Naya was quite the opposite of me, tall, elegant and all but she was has been one of my biggest nightmares for years now.
And besides, this wasn't one of the Mitchell's companies, the ones they claimed as theirs once my parents took their last breath and put me at the door, so why couldn't I be here?
"Leave me alone, Naya." I picked up the magazine, choosing to focus on it instead, hoping that Naya would leave, but she pulled the magazine and shot it to the ground.
"Who let this little thief in here?" she screamed at the top of her voice, and I clenched my fist. She was older than me by five years but was always throwing a tantrum like a kid, and now she was going to cause me trouble, like she always did.
