Chapter 14: Confronting Distance

The sun was setting as Eliza returned to her dorm, the soft glow of dusk casting long shadows across the campus. She felt exhausted, both physically and emotionally. The encounter with Professor James had left her shaken, her mind still swirling with the weight of what had almost happened. She knew she needed to pull herself together, to stop spiraling, but the tension between her feelings for Professor James and her confusion about Alex made it impossible to focus on anything else.

Eliza had barely closed the door behind her when her phone buzzed. She pulled it out of her pocket and froze when she saw Alex’s name light up the screen. Her heart skipped a beat, anxiety twisting in her chest.

Alex: Can we talk?

Eliza stared at the message for a moment, her fingers trembling slightly. She knew what this was about—he had sensed the growing distance between them, the way she’d been avoiding him, and now he wanted answers. She wasn’t ready for this conversation. How could she explain feelings that she didn’t even understand herself?

Her phone buzzed again.

Alex: I’m outside your dorm.

Eliza’s heart sank. He was already here. There was no time to think, no time to prepare. Taking a deep breath, she opened the door, and there he was, standing just a few feet away, his hands shoved into the pockets of his jacket. His expression was serious, and the easygoing smile she was so used to seeing on his face was gone.

“Hey,” Alex said, his voice soft but heavy with unspoken tension.

“Hey,” Eliza replied, her voice tight. She stepped aside, silently inviting him in. He hesitated for a moment before walking inside, the air between them thick with uncertainty. She closed the door, feeling the familiar knot in her stomach tighten.

Alex sat down on the edge of her bed, his gaze fixed on the floor as if gathering his thoughts. Eliza stayed near the door, her arms wrapped around herself, unsure of what to say. The silence stretched, awkward and uncomfortable, until finally, Alex spoke.

“You’ve been distant,” he said, his tone gentle but filled with hurt. “For weeks now, El. Every time I try to talk to you, it’s like… you’re not really there. Did I do something?”

Eliza swallowed hard, her chest tightening with guilt. She had been pulling away, and she knew it. But how could she explain why? How could she tell him that she was drowning in her emotions, confused by her feelings for him and overwhelmed by the connection she felt to her professor?

“It’s not you,” she said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. “It’s just… everything feels so complicated right now.”

Alex looked up, his eyes searching hers. “Complicated how?” His brow furrowed, concern etched into his expression. “Talk to me, Eliza. I don’t want to lose you.”

The weight of his words hit her like a punch to the gut. She didn’t want to lose him either, but how could she be honest with him when she didn’t even understand what she was feeling? She took a shaky breath, her eyes stinging with unshed tears.

“I don’t know how to explain it,” she admitted, her voice breaking. “I feel so… confused. About everything. About you, about school, about… us.”

Alex’s eyes flickered with hurt, but he didn’t look away. “Confused about me?” he asked softly, his voice filled with uncertainty. “I thought we were getting closer. But now, it feels like you’re pulling away.”

Eliza felt her chest tighten even more. She wanted to tell him the truth, but how could she when she didn’t even know what the truth was? “It’s not that I don’t care about you, Alex. I do,” she said, her voice trembling. “It’s just… I don’t know what’s happening with me. I’m scared that if I try to figure it out, I’ll ruin everything.”

Alex stood up, taking a step toward her, his expression softening. “Eliza, you’re not going to ruin anything by being honest. I’d rather you tell me what’s going on than keep shutting me out. I’m here for you, no matter what.”

His words, so genuine and full of care, only made the guilt in Eliza’s chest worse. She looked down, unable to meet his gaze. “I’m not even sure what I’m feeling,” she whispered. “Sometimes… it feels like I want to be close to you. But other times, I feel like I need space, and I don’t understand why.”

Alex let out a soft sigh, his frustration evident but controlled. “Is it someone else?”

The question hung in the air, heavy with implication. Eliza’s heart stopped, and her throat tightened. The memory of her near-miss with Professor James flashed through her mind, and shame flooded her. She couldn’t tell him. Not about that. Not about how far she had let things go with someone she shouldn’t even be thinking about.

But Alex wasn’t finished. “Because if it is, El, I’d rather you tell me now. I’d rather know the truth, even if it hurts, than keep guessing what’s going on.”

Eliza’s breath hitched. She felt trapped, like the walls were closing in on her, and no matter which direction she turned, she would end up hurting someone. “It’s not… like that,” she said weakly. “There’s no one else. Not really.”

“Not really?” Alex repeated, his brow furrowing again. “What does that mean?”

Eliza pressed her palms to her forehead, trying to think. How could she explain the emotional turmoil she’d been going through, the way her feelings for Alex had shifted into something she wasn’t ready to face? And how could she explain the way her heart seemed to leap every time Professor James looked at her, as if he saw something in her that no one else did?

“I’m just confused,” she finally said, her voice cracking under the weight of it all. “About everything. I don’t know what’s real anymore, and I’m scared that I’ll make the wrong choice.”

Alex’s face softened, his eyes filled with a mixture of understanding and sadness. He took another step toward her, his hand hovering near her arm, but not quite touching. “You don’t have to make a choice right now,” he said quietly. “But I need to know where I stand, El. I care about you. A lot. But I can’t keep waiting on the sidelines, wondering if you’re pulling away because of me or because of something else.”

Eliza felt the tears finally spill over, hot and unwelcome. She wiped at them quickly, trying to compose herself. “I don’t want to hurt you, Alex,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “But I don’t know how to fix this. I don’t know how to figure out what I’m feeling without losing you in the process.”

Alex’s expression softened even more, and he reached out, gently placing his hand on her arm. “You won’t lose me, El. Not unless you push me away completely.”

Eliza looked up at him, her heart aching with the weight of his words. She wanted to believe him, wanted to believe that they could find a way through this, but she wasn’t sure how to navigate the mess of emotions inside her. She felt torn between the comfort and familiarity of Alex and the dangerous allure of Professor James, and the pressure to choose was suffocating.

“Please don’t shut me out anymore,” Alex said, his voice soft but insistent. “Whatever you’re going through, we can figure it out together. Just… be honest with me.”

Eliza nodded, though the guilt and confusion still weighed heavily on her. She wasn’t ready to tell him everything—not yet—but maybe, just maybe, she could find a way to be honest about one thing.

“I’m scared,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “I’m scared that I’m going to mess everything up.”

Alex’s expression softened even further, and he gently pulled her into a hug, his arms warm and comforting around her. “You’re not going to mess everything up,” he murmured against her hair. “We’ll figure it out. Together.”

Eliza leaned into him, closing her eyes as she let herself believe, for just a moment, that everything would be okay. But even as she stood there, wrapped in Alex’s arms, she couldn’t shake the lingering guilt. The emotional line she had crossed with Professor James was still there, waiting to be reckoned with. And she knew that no matter how much she wanted to, she couldn’t avoid it forever.

For now, though, she clung to Alex, hoping that maybe, somehow, she could find a way to untangle the mess inside her before it was too late.
