Chapter 56
Alex POV
Bella hadn’t stopped nagging since the reception ended. She just went on and on about how Julie had ruined her perfect wedding day. And, of course, it was all my fault-it always had to be my fault.
“It was supposed to be our day, Alex!” she snapped.
“My day, where I proved to everyone that I was no longer the other woman but now your wife,” she said.
“But no, your ex-wife had to come in and ruin it, and of course, everyone started talking about how I was the other woman-the other woman, Alex!” she said, wiping her face with the wipes.
I ran my hand through my hair. This was going to be one hell of a long night.
“Bella, please, can you just stop it already? We’ve been over this. I didn’t know she was going to come to the wedding-worse still, I didn’t know she was going to react like that.”
“You didn’t know she was going to come to the wedding? Are you seriously being for real? You invited her, remember!” she snapped.
“So, of course, you expected her to come.”
“For Avery! I did it for my daughter, not for Julie,” I argued.
But Bella wasn’t listening. She kept talking and talking about how I had ruined the day.
I moved behind her, my hands reaching out to massage her shoulders, thinking that might calm her down. But it did nothing-she kept yapping and yapping.
Her voice irritated me now; it sounded like an annoying bee’s buzz I couldn’t get rid of.
And then, while she was still nagging, I heard the baby crying. His voice was just as loud as his
mom’s.
The baby continued crying, each cry louder than the previous one.
But Bella didn’t budge from her spot on the seat. She just kept nagging as if the baby wasn’t crying.
I stared at her, waiting for her to get up and tend to our son. But instead, she turned to me and glared.

Chapter 56
“Are you deaf? Can’t you hear the baby crying? Go check on the baby!” she demanded.
I blinked, not sure if I’d heard her right. “Pardon?”
“You heard me,” she snapped. “Go see why he’s crying!”
I threw the towel I had been holding on the floor. I had seriously had enough.
“Are you really serious, Bella? You’re the mother! He needs you! And I clearly can’t breastfeed a baby.”
She rolled her eyes. “Oh, so now I’m the only one who’s supposed to tend to him? What, just because I gave birth to him, I’m the only one who has to care for him?”
“You know what? You’re just really unbelievable,” I snapped.
I had a lot of mean words to say to her, but I held my tongue. Her parents had already threatened me, warning me never to make their precious daughter cry. They were the reason I was out of jail, and I knew they could also be the reason I’d end up back there.
With a clenched fist, I left the room and headed to the nursery. The nanny was standing by the crib, looking tired, confused, and helpless.
“He won’t stop crying,” she said.
“I’ve tried everything to make him stop, but he just won’t,” she added.
I walked to the crib and picked him up, but he still didn’t stop crying.
“He’s probably hungry,” the nanny said. “We’re out of formula, and Mrs. Bella hasn’t restocked yet.”
“Typical Bella,” I muttered.
As I tried my best to soothe the baby, I patted him on the back and walked around the room, but his cries grew louder, and his face was already red.
The baby was clearly hungry, and there was nothing I could do for him, aside from feeding him, that would make him stop crying. The more he cried, the more I lost my mind.
“I’ve had enough of this,” I said as I left the nursery with the baby in my arms and walked to
the room.
“Bella, we’re out of baby formula!” I snapped.
She barely looked up from her phone. “Then buy some.”

“You didn’t think to restock before we ran out?”

She rolled her eyes. “I’ve been busy, Alex. I had a wedding to plan, in case you forgot.”
“You barely attend to the child. The least you could do is make sure there’s enough milk for your own child!” I was livid.
“Even Julie, with all the work she did, made sure Avery was always taken care of. She didn’t have a nanny, but she sure did a great job raising Avery. And you can’t even feed your own son. You are just unbelievable.”
That sure hit a nerve. Bella immediately stood up from the bed and slapped me hard across the face.
“Don’t you dare compare me to that woman!” she yelled.
I rubbed my cheek. She sure knew how to slap hard. The baby was still crying in my arms, and that was the only reason I hadn’t retaliated.
“You know, sometimes you make me sick, Bella,” I said through gritted teeth. “I am this close, just this close to losing it.”
She smirked as she moved closer to me, pushing me with her finger.
“Then lose it, Alex. I dare you to lose it!!” she yelled.
“Go ahead. And see what happens. You think Julie made your life hell? I will ruin you without lifting a finger. And you know what? I’m not Julie. I won’t sit back and watch you misbehave like she did. If you want to play games, I’ll play harder.” She said, looking me squarely in the
eyes.
As if the baby knew what was happening, his cries grew louder.
I took a deep breath as I looked at the woman I had chosen over the one I had discarded.
And for the first time, I wondered if I had made the worst mistake of my life.
