Chapter 46
Julie POV

I stood up from the dining table, tired of waiting for Avery to come in any moment now. I checked the time on my wristwatch, and it was after 9 p.m., which was way past her curfew. She was supposed to be home by now.
Where was she?
I picked up my phone and dialed Avery’s number, but it went straight to voicemail. Voicemail? I tried again, and again, but there was no response. Her phone was probably off, or something bad had happened to her.
I started to panic.
I quickly went to my room and rushed to put on something decent, my mind filled with
worst-case scenarios.
I grabbed my purse and rushed out the door. As I walked down the street, I saw Alex driving toward me. He stopped right where I was.
And then I saw Avery, sitting in the passenger seat, looking sheepish.
“Avery, where have you been?” I asked, rushing to her side of the car, opening the door, and dragging her out. I quickly checked her for any injuries.
Avery shrugged, looking down at her feet. “I was with Dad,” she muttered. It was obvious something was wrong.
I turned to Alex, trying to control myself. “What are you doing here, Alex? And what did you do to my daughter?”
“I went to pick Avery up from school. And what’s with all the interrogation? She’s also my daughter,” said the unintelligent bastard who happens to be the father of my child.
“Okay, no problem. You can go now,” I told him as I led Avery inside the house. She was really going to get it from me.
Alex leaned against his car, looking casual. I’m sure the car was one of the gifts his rich wife gave him.
“Oh, Julie dear, let me inform you that I just moved into the community. Bella and I thought it would be great to be closer to the kids.”

“What! You’ve got to be joking.” I said.

Alex chuckled. “Not in a million years. You know I don’t care to make you laugh, so why would I tell you a joke? We’re just two blocks away now. You can come over for dinner sometime-just inform us first. Bella makes a mean lasagna.”
I felt a surge of anger, but I tried to keep my cool. “I’d rather not, Alex.”
Alex grinned.
“Oh, come on, Julie. Don’t be like that. This is such bratty behavior. We need to show good co-parenting for Avery’s sake. By the way, you should really come to the wedding. Your new boyfriend or plaything will be there, I’m sure of it.”
I tried to say something, but before I could get a word out, Alex winked at me and got back into his car.
“Bastard!” I cursed
As I watched him drive away, I couldn’t help but wonder why he had moved so close to where I lived. Now this neighborhood would be chaotic.
I quickly pulled out my phone and dialed Damien’s number. I needed someone to make me feel better, but it went straight to voicemail.
I tried three more times, but there was still no response. I was starting to get worried. Why wasn’t he picking up my calls today?
It wasn’t until a few hours later that Damien finally called me back.
“Hey love, I’m so sorry I missed your calls,” he said, sounding distracted. “I was in a meeting with Cassandra.”
My eyes narrowed. “A meeting with Cassandra, again? I thought you said you’d have her replaced… What’s going on, Damien?”
Damien sighed. “It’s just business, Julie. The investors really want her as their partner, and there’s nothing I can do about it. Don’t worry about it.”
But I was really worried-maybe a bit jealous and paranoid.
“Damien, please don’t be like Alex,” I whispered. “If you want to end our relationship so you can be with her, go ahead. I won’t hold it against you. Just don’t cheat on me with her.”
Damien’s tone turned defensive. “Julie, that’s not fair. How can you say that? I’m trying to make this business deal work. You know how important this is to me, and Cassandra is

unfortunately a part of it. You need to learn to trust me, like I trust you.”

But I didn’t trust him. Not when it came to Cassandra. The way he talked about her made it obvious the effect she had on him.
“Damien, you know what happened between Alex and me. Because of this, I don’t trust my men around women,” I tried to reason with him.
“But Julie, I don’t question your relationship with Alex either,” he argued back, not understanding my perspective.
“Damien, Alex is different. We have kids together, and besides, I hate Alex,” I told him, sounding annoyed that we were even talking about him.
“And I trust you when you say that you both are just co-parenting. This is the same courtesy you need to give me,” he replied.
“Damien, I wish I could remove Alex from my life, but I can’t. Cassandra, on the other hand, can be removed from yours. She’s irrelevant,” I told him. “And who knows, you might fall for her. She is a beautiful woman, according to you.” I huffed in reply.
“Julie, I thought you were mature. I can’t believe we’re having this type of conversation.”
The worst part is that it’s over the phone.
“Please trust me on this, Julie. You know I was the one who told you about her working for me, so you have to trust me,” he said, sounding tired. But I just couldn’t get over the fact that he was always going to be spending time with her.
This is one of the things Alex did, and look how we turned out, I like Damien, but I don’t know if he’s worth the risk.
“I think we need space,” I said, my voice sounding cold. “Please don’t call me for a while.”
And with that, I ended the call, feeling a sense of unease and uncertainty,
