Chapter 36: Double Identities
Caleb heard rustling about him and hushed voices. He had yet to open his eyes, but he had the most frustrating headache that refused to ease for the past few hours. He had felt like he was under a heavy blanket of sleep that refused to allow him to fully awake.
He had to track down Persephone. He didn't have time for these games. Once he was out this mess, he would hunt down Derrick and murder him before the High House of Camberia could. Of course after he discovered Persephone's whereabouts and after finally marking one another as they always should have done then he would track down that foolish vampire.
"How much adranais root did you put in that vial?" a familiar voice chuckled.
He heard someone huff in annoyance. "I may have miscalculated the dosage." Whoever it may be was female and she also sounded oddly familiar. "I was under a lot of pressure and we nearly lost my master."
"I would never tell Derrick you call him your master, Pandora," the male voice told her in amusement. "You do realize he freed your coven from that maniac. He didn't desire you to see him as your new master."
Pandora sighed. "When Amora decided to sign over our souls to that mage, we would become indebted our immortal lifetime to the one that would rescue us from such a deplorable fate," she explained softly with emotions thickening with each word. "Serena would be so proud of how her son has fared and matured. It would be our duty to her and her son to aid her son in defeating the dreadful vampires that caused her demise."
"Does he know that?" he questioned curiously. "Derrick truly believes that none will come to his aid to assist him in eradicating his House."
"The High House of Camberia has made a lot of enemies," she pointed out. "Many will come out of the woodwork if a powerful soul with strong allies stood against them." There was a pause for a moment. "The problem is more if he'd actually accept the help from others. He entirely feels this was his choice to bear alone since that was the path he had chosen."
There was more silence. Caleb waited, actually discovering this conversation fascinating. He was definitely amongst Derrick's allies after he walloped him for this latest predicament he found him in. He was certain the entire High House of Cristos would be after their wicked treatment of Persephone.
"The High House of Devereux stands with him." That was why the voice sounded familiar! Apollo Devereux was the other soul in the conversation. "We've grown to trust him with his operation to help the ones with unfortunate circumstances. Now that he's to become one of us if Briar doesn't actually kill him first then he shall have family backing him."
"All family," Pandora agreed. "A coven is a family. We've shared our blood and magic. I viewed his mother as my own sister. If he embraced his fairy lineage, he would be my brother in this coven."
Caleb groaned, forcing his eyes open. His head still pounded with that throbbing excruciating headache. He blinked, taking in his surroundings. He slowly forced himself to sit up in the cot he had apparently been placed on.
"Ah, good! You didn't kill the poor vampire then," Apollo chuckled, eyeing him with amusement.
His eyes took him in and the witch that had rescued Derrick from succumbing to the poison from being blackmarked. Her silver eyes gazed upon him with obvious guilt. She walked over to him, handing him a cup of tea.
"It should help with your head," she told him ruefully. "It was brewed a day ago so it may taste less than pleasant, but it will take away your headache."
He drank down the slimy concoction, grimacing in disgust at the taste. However, he felt immediate relief. His headache eased. The grogginess dissipated. His limbs and body felt lighter. His eyes flicked back and forth between the two of them, waiting for some explanation why he was currently here and not in Greece.
Apollo clapped his hands. "Well, come along," he said. "We're all heading to the Merritt Province."
Caleb frowned, watching as Pandora quickly grabbed her belongings. His eyes returned to Apollo, who deposited the suitcase he had put on the train to Greece. What in the world was happening?
"You do want to find Persephone, correct?" Apollo questioned.
Caleb nodded. "Of course."
"Then we need to find Opal Covington," Pandora told him as she walked up to him. "Isn't that right, Lawrence Covington?"
Her eyes slid to the mirror upon the wall. Caleb's eyes widened at their appearances. All of them looked entirely different. Caleb blew out a breath as he glanced over at them incredulously.
"Welcome to the underground my friend," Apollo chuckled. "Waverly, where is the--"
"Ever the impatient one," Pandora grumbled before gesturing to the door leading downstairs. "It's a bit of a journey, but we shall fill you in then, yes?"
Caleb watched Apollo disappear downstairs. Pandora looked at him expectantly. Her eyes showed a bit of frayed impatience but desperately holding on to polite patience. Caleb sighed before nodding his head.
"Lead the way, Waverly," he told her.
Pandora smirked, winking at him before she hurried after Apollo. If this was how he'd find Persephone, he would do anything even assume a different identity. Caleb scooped up his bag and followed the two of them.

Checkmate.
The word sprawled in blood across the picture of Dove tangled up in Dimitri's embrace. Her legs curled about his waist as he pressed his hips into hers. Her back against the mirror of vanity, sitting on the counter. They were kissing each other passionately.
The moment he was approached at the private hangar, he felt that sickening knot of dread that morphed into anger and fear. They knew she was important to him and she was now in danger.
He watched his son and his mate board the plane before hurrying off to return to the Immortal Chrysalis Hotel. He knew she had showed up for her shift around the time they were leaving. It shouldn't be difficult to locate her and unfortunately enlighten her that her life was now in danger by her association with him.
One stolen moment of madness and he had effectively put her life in danger. They knew she was important, because she was the first creature he had embraced in such a way after his deceased wife. He wasn't the type to take part in fleeting amorous affairs. He didn't have bed mates nor mistresses to warm his bed. Even before his mortal wife, he had remained celibate after a half of a century of lustful preoccupation in his youth. It was known that he hardly mixed his existence with short lived bouts of pleasure.
He hadn't wanted Dove to get caught in all of this, but she now was. He quickly made his way to the jazz bar, ignoring the surprised eyes following him as he went. Instead of the usual songbird that graced this bar, there was another. Where was she?
He had questioned a waitress of her whereabouts. The waitress shrugged, telling him that she had just quit and would no longer be entertaining here at the jazz bar. His chest tightened at that slice of information.
As he was about to depart with his mind on how he was going to discover her whereabouts, he barely registered Lord Hyperion sitting at one of the tables.
"You're not the only one seeking her out as late," Lord Hyperion broke into his thoughts. Dimitri glanced over at his old friend and alley. The other vampire smirked, shaking his head. "She's your mate. It all makes sense now why there's a sudden interest in her."
Dimitri blew out a breath. "I wanted her to avoid this madness until all was straightened out." He shook his head as he dug into his pocket to retrieve the photograph with the bloodstained word sprawled across it. "The High House of Camberia will do anything to have leverage and the means to blackmail."
Dimitri handed off the photograph to Hyperion and the vampire immediately looked down at the image. He shook his head, glaring at the word. It was obviously a threat and both vampires knew it.
"This is bad," Hyperion finally told him with a sigh. "It's karma that both of you are each other's mates."
"Why would you say that?"
Hyperion chuckled. "Double identities are both your forte." He got to his feet, eyeing Dimitri. "What does she actually mean to you, Dimitri? Were you planning on actually marking her to be your mate?"
"Yes but it's never been the right time," he confessed grimly. "We've known the truth about our bond since my wife was alive and pregnant with Orion."
Shocked, Hyperion's eyes widened at that confession before he whistled. "Tough situation with that," he grumbled before he glanced down at the photograph. "You couldn't fight the call now that there wasn't truly anything standing in either your way. It makes sense. Then the situation with Persephone happened."
"I don't know anything about her," Dimitri whispered in a strained tone of aggravation. "I should've found out, but it was easier to ignore and avoid the elephant in the room if you didn't get personal."
Hyperion sighed as he handed the photograph back then he shifted his seat back and stood up from the table. His amethyst eyes peered into his before he nodded as if silent answers were made to silent questions.
"Fortunate for you, I actually do know her," he told Dimitri with a quirky smile. "In fact, you know her lineage as well and why it's important to track her down before they do."
Dimitri frowned at that. "Who is she, Hyperion?"
"You know her and most know her as Dove Knightley in the new world," Hyperion said, but he leaned forward to whisper in his ear. "But I know her as Dove Nightingale."
He froze. "Nightingale," he repeated and his eyes widened in shock. "Of the actual...?"
When Hyperion nodded, Dimitri swore and Hyperion chuckled at his reaction. Dimitri looked directly into his friend's eyes that held no lies within them.
"Two peas in one pod, I say," Hyperion stated. "It's absolutely imperative we get to her first. We don't need the new world realizing the old world isn't a myth."
