Chapter 11: Anticipation

Bethany said, "I've just started the treatment. Why are you in such a hurry?"

Bethany was already feeling agitated, and Clinton's call at this time made her somewhat annoyed.

"Aren't I showing concern for you? Why are you so curt with me?" Clinton sounded a bit displeased.

A faint smirk tugged at the corner of Bethany's lips.

She knew very well about Clinton's schemes.

The concern was fake. Probing was real.

Seeing Bethany's silence, Clinton asked, "Are you feeling down? Something bothering you?"

Bethany took a drag of her cigarette and replied nonchalantly, "Yeah, some work stuff, a bit tricky."

"Do you need my help?" Clinton asked.

"No need," Bethany replied.

"Baby, don't stress yourself out. There's a party the day after tomorrow. Let me take you there to relax, Okay?" Clinton suddenly adopted a gentle and coaxing tone.

Normally, when Clinton went out for entertainment, it was always with some idle playboys, indulging in nothing but revelry. Bethany had always looked down on it.

But at this critical juncture, she had to keep Clinton stable. Once they were married, she could then deal with his playboy ways.

Bethany agreed readily, and Clinton was somewhat surprised. "Baby, you're finally coming around. Dress up nicely then. I want everyone to know how stunning my fiancée is."

Bethany gave a perfunctory response.

Clinton was in a good mood and asked with a smile, "Do you miss me?"

Bethany furrowed her brows. She couldn't remember the last time Clinton had asked her this. Perhaps it was earlier this year, or maybe last year.

It didn't matter.

She didn't care about these empty romantic words at all.

Bethany skillfully evaded it. "I'll tell you when we meet the day after tomorrow. I'm a bit tired and want to sleep."

"Okay, I'll come to pick you up the day after tomorrow. Goodnight," Clinton said cheerfully.

"Goodnight." Bethany hung up the phone and extinguished her cigarette.

The night sky was shrouded in a drizzle, tapping against the glass window and leaving scattered marks. Bethany watched for a while and gradually felt drowsy.

She was waiting for a message, but her phone remained silent throughout.

What was she expecting, Stanley's reply?

She felt it ridiculous.

...

In Orkta City.

Vincent had to perform an emergency surgery, and by the time he finished, the sky was already bright.

He saw Bethany's message from earlier in the night and couldn't help but smile. She really couldn't resist teasing.

He wanted to reply but didn't want to disturb Bethany's sleep, so he went straight home to rest.

Vincent had been working continuously for two days and nights, and now waking up, it was already dusk.

The first thing he did after opening his eyes was to pick up his phone and send Bethany a message. [I just woke up. What are you up to?]

However, until night fell, there was still no response from her.

During this time, whether eating or working, Vincent kept glancing at his phone.

The distracted Vincent attracted too much attention, so much so that when Stanley came to find him, he immediately sensed that something was amiss.

"Vincent, what's wrong with you?" Stanley observed Vincent with furrowed brows.

Faced with his friend's questioning, Vincent was still puzzled. "What's wrong with me?"

Stanley glanced at Vincent's feet and reminded him. "Your slippers, you've put them on the wrong feet."

Vincent looked down and indeed found that he had put on his slippers the wrong way.

He was stunned for a moment, then changed them around. "I was in a hurry when I opened the door for you just now and didn't pay attention."

Stanley didn't believe his friend's explanation. He knew Vincent inside out. "Don't joke with me. Do you think I can disturb your thoughts?"

After a pause, he stared at Vincent intently and said, "Are you in love?"
