Chapter 155: Sweet Surrender
Amelia's POV
I closed my eyes as Alexander's lips found mine, but the memory of his rage still lingered beneath the surface.
Part of me wanted to push him away, to demand more answers about Azure Lake and his disproportionate reaction. But another part—the part that recognized the genuine fear in his eyes when he thought I was in danger—surrendered to his touch.
His kiss melted my resistance slowly, like ice thawing under persistent sunlight. With each gentle press of his lips, the terrifying image of his ice-blue eyes faded a little more. The world gradually disappeared—the fear, the confusion, the hurt—leaving just us, wrapped in this fragile moment of reconciliation.
His arms tightened around my waist, pulling me closer until there was no space left between us. I could feel his heart hammering against mine, a reminder of how agitated he'd been.
His lips moved to my neck, sending conflicting shivers down my spine—part pleasure, part lingering apprehension. "I shouldn't have reacted that way," he murmured against my skin. "I'm sorry."
The words were simple, but I sensed the depth behind them. Alexander Westbrook didn't apologize often. I nodded slightly, breathing in his scent—cedar and something uniquely Alexander. My anger hadn't completely dissolved, but it was being steadily replaced by a cautious warmth spreading through my body.
I studied his face as he pulled back slightly. The wild fury had vanished, leaving behind the man I recognized—controlled, intense, but no longer frightening. The marks on my wrist still stung, a physical reminder of how quickly things had escalated, but the genuine regret in his eyes soothed the worst of the hurt.
"You should rest," he said, slowly pulling away. "Tomorrow we return to Shadow Kingdom."
"Wait." I grabbed his wrist before he could stand. "Today is your birthday."
His expression remained neutral, as if I'd mentioned something as trivial as the weather. "It doesn't matter."
"The hell it doesn't." I placed my hands on my hips, staring him down. For once, I wasn't intimidated by his Alpha presence. "You spend every waking moment taking care of all members of Shadow Kingdom. Today, you're going to let someone take care of you."
Alexander raised an eyebrow, clearly not used to being challenged. "Amelia—"
"Nope. Not hearing it." I tugged him toward the living room. "All you think about is work, work, work. For once in your life, focus on yourself." I pushed him toward the couch. "I spent all day preparing for this. Sit."
I hurried to the bedroom, replacing the candles that had burned down while I'd waited for him to arrive. The new candles flickered to life under my lighter's flame. I switched off the apartment lights, letting the golden glow fill the room.
Walking carefully so the candles wouldn't go out, I carried the cake to where Alexander sat. His eyes widened slightly at the sight—a chocolate cake with a tiny wolf figurine in the center, surrounded by a crown design in blue frosting.
"I know you're the Head Alpha," I explained, setting the cake on the coffee table. "The leader of all wolf packs. But to me..." I hesitated, feeling heat rise to my cheeks. "To me, you're just my mate."
I reached for the small box on the nightstand. Inside was a simple silver four-leaf clover pendant on a leather cord—nothing flashy, but elegant enough for an Alpha who rarely wore jewelry.
"May I?" I asked, holding up the necklace.
To my surprise, Alexander bowed his head slightly, allowing me to fasten it around his neck. The pendant rested just below his collarbone, catching the candlelight.
"Make a wish," I said, gesturing to the flickering candles.
Alexander stared at the flames for a long moment. Then, without blowing, he simply pinched out each flame between his fingers. His eyes locked with mine.
"I have no wishes that need fulfilling," he said quietly. "I already have everything I want."
My heart stuttered in my chest. Was he talking about me? About us? Before I could analyze his words, he picked up the knife and sliced through the cake with characteristic precision.
I clapped my hands like an excited child, earning one of his rare half-smiles. The sight of it made my wolf stir inside me, pleased to see our mate happy, even if just for a moment.
"Here," I said, carefully lifting a piece onto a fork. "Tell me if you like it."
I watched nervously as Alexander accepted the bite, studying his expression for any reaction. His features softened just slightly—enough for me to count it as approval.
The silence stretched between us, comfortable yet charged with something I couldn't quite name. I watched as he methodically cut another slice, his movements precise and controlled, just like everything else he did. The candlelight danced across his features, softening the hard angles of his face and illuminating those impossible blue eyes.
"What made you choose a four-leaf clover?" he asked suddenly, his fingers absently touching the pendant at his throat.
I shrugged, suddenly self-conscious. "I know it's not some fancy designer piece but... it reminded me of us. Something rare and unexpected."
His eyes met mine, intense and searching. "You know what they represent?"
"Good luck," I offered.
"Each leaf has a meaning," he said, voice low and intimate. "Faith, hope, love, and luck. The ancient Celts believed they could see evil spirits coming when they held a four-leaf clover."
I smiled, fascinated by this glimpse into his knowledge. "Is that why you're always so vigilant? Secret werewolf super-vision?"
The corner of his mouth twitched. "Perhaps."
"Do you remember all your birthdays?" I asked, curious about the man beneath the Alpha exterior.
A shadow crossed his face. "The important ones."
I wanted to ask more, to dig deeper into the mysteries that made up Alexander Westbrook, but I sensed his walls beginning to rebuild. Instead, I reached for the fork he still held.
"My turn to feed you," I said lightly, trying to recapture the moment. I scooped up a generous bite, deliberately getting a bit of frosting on the side.
He took the fork from my hand, cutting a small piece and raising it to my lips. I opened my mouth, tasting the rich chocolate and hint of something I couldn't quite identify.
"It's... interesting," I admitted. "I've never tasted anything like it."
Alexander's gaze fixed on my mouth, his eyes darkening. "You have frosting," he said, his voice dropping lower.
"Where?" I touched my face self-consciously, then noticed his intense focus on the corner of my lips. I licked my lips, trying to find the spot. "Did I get it?"
A slow smile spread across his face—not the polite public smile or the predatory one he used in negotiations. This was something rare and genuine that made my stomach flip.
He leaned toward me, and I instinctively backed up until I felt the couch behind me. My heart thundered in my chest as he moved closer, his body caging mine against the cushions.
"Alex?" I whispered, unsure what was happening.
He didn't answer. Instead, he bent down, his tongue darting out to catch a dot of frosting at the corner of my mouth. The contact was brief but electric, sending a jolt through my entire body.
"You were right," he murmured, his face still inches from mine. "I should pay more attention to my... personal life."
