Chapter 77: Chapter Seventy-Four
Zachary's POV
As I entered the hallway from the elevator, I sighed sadly. It's been weeks since our mate has been asleep. Doc tried to wake her up after the first week, but nothing happened. She wouldn't wake up.
He said that sometimes people take a little longer to wake up. When Jordan asked him how long to expect, the doc gave us a vague answer.
"Sometimes it can take up to a few hours, to a few days, weeks and in rare cases..years."
Levi lost it at what he said and left. He's been pushing our warriors past their limit when it comes to training. He even tried to strangle Angela who was being kept in our cells, he knew she was the one to blame for this. If it hadn't been for myself and Dad, Levi would've killed the woman.
Honestly, I would not have cared if she died. But according to the law, werewolves cannot kill a human. I got away with it when I killed Katie because I had evidence. These guys? They covered everything up. Even when they kidnapped Brooklyn and tried to sell her and Silas.
With no real proof we haven't been allowed to serve them justice. The only justice we got was those kids that were with them had all been taken away. That little girl that resembled Rosalie was being fostered by Mary. Katie's three boys well the older two who are eighteen are being kept in the local jail for kidnapping. Jacob said it was temporary, but it'll do for now.
And her youngest, Cole, he was staying with Mom and our dads.
I argued with them about letting him stay so close to the family, but Mom was persistent and gave him the guest room in their home. I don't know what she was thinking.
Nurse Jalen saw me come around the corner and gave me a smile. "Good morning Alpha Zachary."
"Good morning," I nodded curtly and kept walking. She welcomed me nearly every morning. But I knew she wasn't flirting with me, she recently found out that Brady Beta was her mate. Only he's denying the bond and refusing her at every chance he gets. My thing is if he didn't want her he would've rejected her by now. By him not doing it, that tells me he's thinking about what he really wants.
I approached the room and took a deep breath. I held my book tightly in my hand and opened the door to the private room we have her in. Jordan made sure she had the best when he talked to Uncle Brandon. Her bed is soft and the blankets are thick so she stays warm. We even hired people to exercise her muscles so they don't get stiff while she sleeps. We would never give up on her. Especially me.
Levi has tried everything to wake her up. Even commanded that Jordan and I mark her. We both said no. We knew if we marked her she'd go into heat again, even while asleep. There was no way we were putting her through that again. And I wasn't fucking her without her consent, she's been used enough as it is.
When I opened the door I smiled, her scent perfumed the entire room and it filled the room like a soft blanket. I usually came here after a long day, I know I wasn't mated to her anymore but her natural scent was perfect enough to calm the beast inside of me.
I pulled one of the chairs closer to the bed and opened up the book I'd been reading. I found it relaxing when I read my favorite books to Cassandra. This one however I'd not picked up in years. Treasure Island was something my grandma Robin would read to me and my siblings before bed. When she died I hadn't picked it up until last week.
I breathed in a deep and long breath before opening my mouth and started reading to Cassie.
**********
A little over an hour later the lights began flickering, and the monitor beeped rapidly a couple times before everything settled down. I stood up and hit the button on the wall. I examined Cassandra but nothing seemed off, other than her hands. They were cold so I picked each one up and covered them in my own warm ones.
"Are you trying to tell me something angel?" I murmured.
The nurse from the front desk came in a confused look on her face. "Alpha what's wrong?" She asked as she walked over to Cassie.
"Her monitors began beeping. Does that always happen?" I asked her.
"No sir. But I don't think anything is wrong, I mean she looks fine." The nurse mumbled as she looked over her chart then went up to the monitors. "if it helps I can get the doctor and he can run some tests?"
I nodded. "Yes please!" I didn't want to take any chances. If I'd rather be safe, then be sorry that I didn't do anything.
The nurse left and I sat back down in my seat. I kissed both of her hands, then put them back down and cover her up with the blanket by pulling it up and over her chest, her arms tucked at her sides so she stayed warm.
I then picked my book back up, when I found where I left off at I went to read again when her monitor went off again. I closed my book and got up and sat at her side. "Cass ?" I murmured. "Can you hear me"
When one of the lights flicked off then back on I knew something was happening. A huge smile formed on my face and I scooted closer to her. While I stared at her like some type of creep, my wolf Zane paced back and forth in my head. He could feel it too. What exactly, we didn't know.
Her breathing picked up, her chest lifting and falling with heavy breaths. "Cassandra?" Just as I said her name a nurse came rushing in. I gave her a quick look and then my gaze fell back on the woman before me in the bed.
I grabbed her shoulders to keep her from thrashing around and she screamed, when she did the windows rattled with how loud she screamed. "Cassie, it's Zach. You're safe." I told her, hoping it would calm her down.
"No, let me go." She said, and pushed on my chest. But I refused to let her push me away. I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her into me. I whispered soft and soothing words in her ear until she was able to calm down and realize that it's only me and not someone else.
"Susan, go call my brothers. Tell them that their Luna is awake." I ordered the young nurse and she nodded, unable to do her job due to how frantic Cassie was. She nodded quickly and rushed out.
"Shhh shhh. Everything is alright. They'll be here soon." I murmured in her ear and rubbed her back.
It took longer than I liked to get her to stop hitting me and for her to finally recognize who I was. Her heart was still racing, but when I pulled back and stared into those beautiful irises of hers did I see genuine terror.
A sob broke free and Cassie took my shirt in her hands and buried her face in my chest. She began crying—no, she began sobbing as she gripped me tighter and closer.
I kissed the top of her head and closed my eyes. Goddess I've missed her so damn much. Right now I didn't care if our bond was broken, I was just happy that she was alive.
